Cora was sitting on the edge of the bathtub, looking at the strip in her hands. There were definitely two lines visible. Her heart fluttered, was she pregnant? She was going to make an appointment at the doctors, to get a definite answer.
There was a knock on the door. “Are you alright?” It was Robert. Cora jumped up, she didn’t know he was home.
“I am.” She answered quickly, hiding the test in a towel. She washed her hands and opened the bathroom door. “What are you doing home this early?”
Robert rubbed his temples. “I have a headache since this morning, and I wanted to rest a little before we have that event this afternoon.”
Cora walked over to Robert and kissed his cheek. “Go lay down, I will wake you on time.”
Cora called the doctors office, and she could come in directly. She was happy Robert was sleeping, he didn’t notice her getting out. The doctor confirmed she was pregnant.
Walking on cloud nine, Cora returned home. Robert was still in bed. He should wake up soon, to get ready for the event.
It was a charity event to raise money for Under One Sky, a cause Cora was very passionate about, and Robert embraced the charity with both arms. He knew how much it meant to Cora.
Cora sat down on Robert’s side of the bed. She brushed his hair. His hair was curly, especially when it was getting longer. Robert woke up from her touches and smiled at her. “I was fast asleep, I am afraid.”
“You were. How is your headache?”
“Better.” Robert looked in Cora’s eyes. “What is wrong?”
Cora turned away her face. “Nothing, is wrong.”
Robert put his hand on her cheek. “Something happened! Something bad?”
Cora hated that Robert could read her so well. “I have some news.” She started. Cora stood up and walked out of the bedroom. When returning she was holding a letter. “Read it.” She said.
Robert started reading and when he closed it, his eyes were big, and he had a big smile on his face. His hand moved to her stomach. “Are you really? Are we getting a boy?”
“That I don’t know.” Cora smiled. “But yes, I am pregnant. We will be parents soon.”
Robert got up a bit more and pulled Cora close. “Oh, darling what wonderful news. We have to tell Mama.”
Cora drew back a little. “Can we wait with that? It is so early, everything can still go wrong.”
“Did the doctor tell you how far along you are?” Robert asked, stroking Cora’s hair.
“She thinks that I am about 4 weeks pregnant. Can we wait with telling people, until we have the first scan at 12 weeks?”
“My mother isn’t just anyone.” Robert said with a dark voice.
“Darling, you know what I mean. Please.” She kissed his cheek, to calm him down again.
“Well, this explains your nausea in the morning the last weeks.”
Cora smiled. “It does.”

“Congratulations. What wonderful news.” Rosamund said while hugging Cora. “How are you feeling.”
“A lot better, now I don’t have morning sickness anymore.” She said, resting her hand on her abdomen. There wasn’t anything to see or feel yet, although Robert said he saw change in her body. She noticed she had her hand there a lot.
“Are you going to find out the gender?”
Cora looked at Robert, she wanted that, to be a surprise until the birth, but she didn’t know what Robert wanted.
“I would love to know.” Robert said. “But we are going to let it be a surprise.” He took Cora’s hand. “Right? You want it to be a surprise.”
Cora lowered her eyes. “I do, but only if, you are sure.”
Robert briefly touched Cora’s abdomen. “I can wait until the birth. Just 6 more months.”
“Does Mama know you are pregnant?” Rosamund asked.
Robert’s hand rested on Cora’s back. “Not yet, we are going to tell her this afternoon.”
“She will be thrilled.” Rosamund said.
Only if it is a boy, Cora thought. But she kept that to herself.

Cora had made a shepherd’s pie, Violet could arrive anytime. Cora was a bundle of nerves.
“Why are you nervous. Mama will be overjoyed to become a grandmother.” Robert said while helping Cora clean the kitchen.
“What if it is a girl? You and Mama will not be overjoyed.” Cora said silently. Robert wasn’t paying attention and didn’t hear it.

That night Robert had fallen asleep the moment he put down his head on the pillow. Cora was lying awake, staring at the ceiling. Maybe it was better to find out the gender earlier? Would Robert love the baby if it was a girl? Would Robert be angry? He would be disappointed, that was for sure.
She caressed her abdomen. Robert was right, her body was already changing. There was a tiny bump. She laid her hand protectively on it. ‘I will love you, no matter what. Boy or a girl, you will be my little one. Take your time to grow, darling one.’
Robert turned on his side. “What did you say?” He said with a sleepy voice.
He startled Cora, she hadn’t noticed she had spoken out loud. “Go back to sleep, darling. I was talking to our little one.”
Robert laid his hand on her hands and kissed her cheek. “In 6 months, we will see this wonder. Are you truly feeling alright?”
Cora kissed Robert. “I feel fine.” She turned on her side and nestled against Robert. Her head on his arm, she felt safe in his arms. Although he didn’t really love her, they had formed a special bond, she knew he would always be there for her.
