It took you a year!, chapter 6

Cora was sitting on the edge of the bathtub, looking at the strip in her hands. There were definitely two lines visible. Her heart fluttered, was she pregnant? She was going to make an appointment at the doctors, to get a definite answer.

There was a knock on the door. “Are you alright?” It was Robert. Cora jumped up, she didn’t know he was home.

“I am.” She answered quickly, hiding the test in a towel. She washed her hands and opened the bathroom door. “What are you doing home this early?”

Robert rubbed his temples. “I have a headache since this morning, and I wanted to rest a little before we have that event this afternoon.”

Cora walked over to Robert and kissed his cheek. “Go lay down, I will wake you on time.”

Cora called the doctors office, and she could come in directly. She was happy Robert was sleeping, he didn’t notice her getting out. The doctor confirmed she was pregnant.

Walking on cloud nine, Cora returned home. Robert was still in bed. He should wake up soon, to get ready for the event.

It was a charity event to raise money for Under One Sky, a cause Cora was very passionate about, and Robert embraced the charity with both arms. He knew how much it meant to Cora.

Cora sat down on Robert’s side of the bed. She brushed his hair. His hair was curly, especially when it was getting longer. Robert woke up from her touches and smiled at her. “I was fast asleep, I am afraid.”

“You were. How is your headache?”

“Better.” Robert looked in Cora’s eyes. “What is wrong?”

Cora turned away her face. “Nothing, is wrong.”

Robert put his hand on her cheek. “Something happened! Something bad?”

Cora hated that Robert could read her so well. “I have some news.” She started. Cora stood up and walked out of the bedroom. When returning she was holding a letter. “Read it.” She said.

Robert started reading and when he closed it, his eyes were big, and he had a big smile on his face. His hand moved to her stomach. “Are you really? Are we getting a boy?”

“That I don’t know.” Cora smiled. “But yes, I am pregnant. We will be parents soon.”

Robert got up a bit more and pulled Cora close. “Oh, darling what wonderful news. We have to tell Mama.”

Cora drew back a little. “Can we wait with that? It is so early, everything can still go wrong.”

“Did the doctor tell you how far along you are?” Robert asked, stroking Cora’s hair.

“She thinks that I am about 4 weeks pregnant. Can we wait with telling people, until we have the first scan at 12 weeks?”

“My mother isn’t just anyone.” Robert said with a dark voice.

“Darling, you know what I mean. Please.” She kissed his cheek, to calm him down again.

“Well, this explains your nausea in the morning the last weeks.”

Cora smiled. “It does.”

+++

“Congratulations. What wonderful news.” Rosamund said while hugging Cora. “How are you feeling.”

“A lot better, now I don’t have morning sickness anymore.” She said, resting her hand on her abdomen. There wasn’t anything to see or feel yet, although Robert said he saw change in her body. She noticed she had her hand there a lot.

“Are you going to find out the gender?”

Cora looked at Robert, she wanted that, to be a surprise until the birth, but she didn’t know what Robert wanted.

“I would love to know.” Robert said. “But we are going to let it be a surprise.” He took Cora’s hand. “Right? You want it to be a surprise.”

Cora lowered her eyes. “I do, but only if, you are sure.”

Robert briefly touched Cora’s abdomen. “I can wait until the birth. Just 6 more months.”

“Does Mama know you are pregnant?” Rosamund asked.

Robert’s hand rested on Cora’s back. “Not yet, we are going to tell her this afternoon.”

“She will be thrilled.” Rosamund said.

Only if it is a boy, Cora thought. But she kept that to herself.

+++

Cora had made a shepherd’s pie, Violet could arrive anytime. Cora was a bundle of nerves.

“Why are you nervous. Mama will be overjoyed to become a grandmother.” Robert said while helping Cora clean the kitchen.

“What if it is a girl? You and Mama will not be overjoyed.” Cora said silently. Robert wasn’t paying attention and didn’t hear it.

+++

That night Robert had fallen asleep the moment he put down his head on the pillow. Cora was lying awake, staring at the ceiling. Maybe it was better to find out the gender earlier? Would Robert love the baby if it was a girl? Would Robert be angry? He would be disappointed, that was for sure.

She caressed her abdomen. Robert was right, her body was already changing. There was a tiny bump. She laid her hand protectively on it. ‘I will love you, no matter what. Boy or a girl, you will be my little one. Take your time to grow, darling one.’

Robert turned on his side. “What did you say?” He said with a sleepy voice.

He startled Cora, she hadn’t noticed she had spoken out loud. “Go back to sleep, darling. I was talking to our little one.”

Robert laid his hand on her hands and kissed her cheek. “In 6 months, we will see this wonder. Are you truly feeling alright?”

Cora kissed Robert. “I feel fine.” She turned on her side and nestled against Robert. Her head on his arm, she felt safe in his arms. Although he didn’t really love her, they had formed a special bond, she knew he would always be there for her.

It took you a year!, chapter 5

Robert came home, he found Cora in the laundry room. He touched her shoulder, she was wearing headphones and didn’t notice him.

Cora got startled, but when she saw Robert, she smiled. “You are home early. What a surprise.”

“I hope it is a good surprise.”

“You are always a good surprise.” Cora said pressing her lips against his. As always she felt him holding back, but in the last 3 months she had learned to ignore it.

“I have a real surprise for you.” He took her hand and guided her to the living room. On the table there was a guitar case.

Cora looked at Robert. “You didn’t!”

Robert smiled. “I don’t know. Just open it.”

Cora opened the case, there wasn’t a guitar inside, just an envelope. She opened it and read: ‘Go to the shop and pick out the best guitar you want. You are getting lessons from The Nelson Brothers.’

“Oh darling, thank you. Thank you so much.” Cora wrapped both arms around Robert and kissed him until she needed air.

Robert chuckled. “I think you like this surprise.” He kissed her cheek. “Enjoy, Rosamund will go with you to the shop. I need to go back to work.”

The corners of Cora’s mouth lowered. She had hoped they would go together, but unfortunately, Robert still wasn’t romantically attracted and did things like this, because he needed to. No! She said to herself. That is not totally true. He enjoys giving me presents.

+++

In the end Cora had an amazing time together with Rosamund. Rosamund had arranged a high tea at The Ritz, and after that they went to the Nelson Brothers. There was an instant click between Cora and the brothers, and it turned out Cora had talent.

Rosamund had enjoyed watching Cora blossom, with that guitar in her hands. There was a completely different woman sitting in front of her. Rosamund was amazed that she was so musical, her voice had a soothing sound. Before they both knew it, the first two hours were gone.

“Cora, we have to go back home. Robert is expecting you back for that dinner tonight.”

Cora looked up, her eyes were shimmering from happiness. “You can’t believe how much fun I had.” She turned around to Simon and Steve. “I can’t thank you enough for today.”

Steve smiled. “I hope this wasn’t the last time we saw each other.” He winked at her.

Cora followed Rosamund with coloured cheeks. She had truly enjoyed herself.

+++

“Are you ready?” Robert asked.

Cora had changed her dress for the third time. At the moment she was wearing a white slim dress with a cape. Robert entered the bedroom.

“You look stunning, darling.” He kissed her cheek and looked at her with a lot of approval in his eyes. “To bad we have to go to that dinner. I would love to do other stuff with you now.” His hand rested on her hip.

Cora chuckled. “We could skip tonight, or just arrive later?” Her hands roamed over his arms.

“I am a special guest tonight, of course, we aren’t skipping. I have to give a speech.” Robert gave her an annoyed look. “I thought you knew what tonight was about?”

“I, yes, well, I.” Cora stuttered. She scraped her throat. “Of course I do, but you gave me that look!” Now Cora was also annoyed.

“So, I can’t look at my wife, when she is wearing a stunning dress?” He turned around and started to walk away. “Please hurry up, will you. I don’t want to be late!”

Cora let out a deep sigh. She chose black shoes with sparkling stones on top. Her heel was quite high. She knew Robert liked those heels on her.

+++

Dinner had been boring, but the evening ended with a little party. Cora was drinking wine and looked at Robert across the room. He was sipping his Whiskey, when he caught her gaze, he walked over. “Are you enjoying yourself?” He knew she wasn’t. There weren’t many people Cora knew.

The song ‘Stand by me’ from Ben E. King was played. Robert took Cora by the hand and guided her to the dance floor. This was something that was so natural with them from day one. They felt each other perfectly and Cora was like butter in Robert’s hands on the dance floor. Cora loved these moments. Even though they fought just earlier this evening, Cora was happy in this relationship.

+++

Robert was holding Cora close to him on the dancefloor. He wasn’t sure if she was really happy. They had a lot of arguments. He didn’t seem to understand her. The gift of this morning was a bulls eye and that made him happy. He started to learn what Cora needed.

Cora knew a lot better what he needed. She knew when he needed physical attention, but also when she should stay away. Her small notes next to his breakfast plate were heart warming.

He felt Cora stumble, and he came back to earth with his thoughts. He tightened his grip on her. “Are you alright?” He asked.

Cora have him a big smile. “I just tripped over my own feet.” She sounded tipsy.

Robert smiled internally, Cora didn’t drink much, but tonight, she already had four glasses of wine. He tightened his grip and brushed his lips against her neck.

“We should go home.”

Cora looked up at Robert. Did she see lust or love? She couldn’t tell. But it didn’t matter, he wanted her and she needed him. She moulded her body against his and whispered in his ear. “We should indeed, go home.”

+++

The next morning, Cora had to run to the bathroom. She was nauseous and reached the bathroom just in time. When she finally felt a little bit better, she got back into bed. Robert woke up, from her getting back in bed and scooted closer.

Cora pushed him away. “I am not feeling well.”

“What’s wrong?” Robert asked with a worried look in his eyes. He saw her covering her mouth with her hand. “Oh, no. You didn’t even drink that much last night.”

Cora shook her head. “Just 4 glasses, but it isn’t sitting well with me. I am feeling rather sick, and I think I will stay in bed.”

“I will call my mother to cancel lunch. Do you want something now? Dry toast maybe?”

“We can always try. Thank you, darling.” Cora laid back down on her pillow in the hope the nausea would go away.

It took you a year!, chapter 4

When Robert woke up, his head was pounding. He knew he had too much beer last night. He sat on the side of the bed and saw a glass of water and paracetamol on his nightstand. He felt awful, not just because of his hangover. He didn’t remember everything from last night, but he felt he did something wrong.

Slowly he got up and walked into the kitchen. He found Cora who was making breakfast for him.

“Good morning.” He said, avoiding looking at her.

“Morning. How is your head doing?”

“Bad.” Was the only thing Robert said.

“Next time, don’t drink that much.” She put down a plate with bacon and beans in front of him. “Eat this, it will help with the hangover” and she walked away.

Robert grabbed her hand. “Cora?”

“What!” She snapped.

Robert lowered his head. “I think I have to say sorry.”

“You think?” Cora said with raised eyebrows.

“Well, I don’t remember yesterday evening, very clearly.”

Cora pulled her hand back. “Just don’t drink that much in the future, alright?”

Before Robert could say something, she slammed the kitchen door shut. It made Robert’s head burst, but he obviously deserved it.

+++

The following weeks had been rough. Cora felt like she was failing in every department. She wasn’t pregnant, that clearly was upsetting Robert. Violet wasn’t happy with the way she was presenting herself in the society. It turned out she was expected to arrange dinner parties.

She had argued with Violet, that if nobody told her stuff like that, she couldn’t know it. But Violet had ignored her protests and started inviting people over to their home. Violet also insisted that they needed a housemaid and a cook. But Cora had nothing else to do during the day, so she was happy to clean and cook herself. Even for the large dinner parties Violet arranged.

Her mother was complaining she didn’t call often enough, but with the time difference it was just hard finding a suitable time. One day she had said that Martha was the one who wanted her to marry a British man, so she should stop complaining, or move over here.

+++

Cora had made herself a cup of coffee and was sitting outside on the roof terrace. Feeling down, she had just argued with Violet, she didn’t even know what the start of the argument was. She felt a hand on her shoulder, what startled her. She looked into the eyes of Rosamund.

“I figured you could use a friend.” Rosamund said.

Cora’s eyes started tearing up. “You want something to drink?” She said swallowing away the tears.

Rosamund held up a cup and said. “Let those tears out. It doesn’t help putting your feelings away. She walked around the bench and sat down opposite of Cora. She took Cora’s hands in hers. “Mama, can be harsh sometimes, but she means well.”

Rosamund had been present when Violet went off  on Cora just now. Cora was still fighting the tears, what if Violet, who was still inside, saw her tears. Rosamund moved next to Cora on the couch. She wrapped an arm around Cora.

“Robert is bringing Mama home, let them out.” She said.

Cora looked over her shoulder and saw indeed an empty living room. “I don’t know, if Robert and I made the right choice.” She said with a strained voice.

Rosamund didn’t say anything, she just rubbed Cora’s arm, encouraging her to talk on.

“I am a disappointment to your mother. I don’t know how to behave in the British upper-class. We don’t have all these rules and little things in America.”

Rosamund pulled Cora closer. “I don’t even know how to behave around all these high-class women. And I am born into it. Don’t you worry to much. You are doing a really fine job.”

Cora rested her head against Rosamund’s shoulder and let out all the tears she was saving now for weeks.

“I am also a disappointed to Robert.” Cora sobbed.

“What.” Rosamund pulled back a little. “Why do you think that?”

“I am still not pregnant, and Robert wants a boy so bad.”

“Darling, Cora. You are together for about two months now. Give it some more time, God willing you two will be blessed with a little one.” Rosamund smiled at her. “Is my brother treating you alright?”

Cora got confused by this question. Did Rosamund know about the terms of their marriage. Cora looked at Rosamund, before she could say anything, Rosamund said: “I know the reason why Robert chose you.”

Cora lowered her eyes and wrangled her hands in her lap. Rosamund put her hand on Cora’s. “I know you love Robert, and he will learn to love you too.”

“You think?” Cora asked unsure. She didn’t believe Robert would ever love her.

“If it isn’t love, he will at least treat you as a very, very dear friend.” Rosamund stopped when the sliding doors opened, and Robert stepped outside.

“Cora? Are you alright?” He said when he saw her red eyes.

Cora nodded. “I am, don’t worry.”

Robert walked over and gave her a quick kiss on her cheek. “I hate to see you cry. Are you homesick?”

Cora cupped Robert’s cheek. “I am alright, I promise. Now, it is time for me to start dinner. Rosamund, are you staying?” Cora got up from the couch. Wiped away her tears and straightened her back.

+++

Robert looked at the two women in the kitchen. He was happy Cora had found a friend in Rosamund. It made her life a little bit easier, and also his. Because Rosamund could teach Cora all the ins and outs of the society.

He went into his office to finish some work. Mama had a rant on him in the car, that he was lacking behind. He also told her his idea about buying back the estate. He wasn’t sure how she felt about that. He himself wasn’t sure either. Was he ready to be a real lord and keep up the estate? He knew how to tell other estate owners how to handle business but doing it yourself was different. And did he want to live so far out of London?

Downton Abbey, was located in North Yorkshire. He had visited the place many times and every time he drove up that driveway, his heart fluttered. This once, was the family home. Now only the title was left, and if he didn’t have a boy, even that title would get lost.

It took you a year!, chapter 3

Cora was looking through the photo album she made of the honeymoon. It was already a month ago, Cora’s life had changed immensely since she married Robert.

Adjusting to London was difficult, she was that American girl for a lot of people, and she didn’t have friends yet. Robert was taking her to a lot of events, but she always stayed at his side. The upper-class women of London, looked down on her, so it was safer to stay close to Robert.

Her relationship with Robert was strange, most of the time she felt, he was just a friend. A friend who gave her a lot of pleasure in bed, she had to admit. But she wished there was more affection outside the bedroom.

The oven made a sound, Cora got up and put the wedding album aside. She could dream about that special time another time. Robert would be home soon, and he had asked for dinner to be ready. He had another meeting this evening. She herself had to go to Violet.

It was something Violet often did, inviting her for the evening. And every time there were other women attending, who Cora didn’t know. Each time Cora got the feeling she was judged and tested by Violet. Violet hadn’t approved of the marriage, that Cora just knew. In her eyes Cora was that American girl with no standards.

+++

Robert stopped at the local supermarket to buy some flowers. He wasn’t home a lot the last weeks, and he knew Cora must be lonely. He wished she just made some friends, so he had no reason to feel guilty.

When he opened the front door, he was welcomed by a wonderful smell. Cora was a real kitchen princess. She had quickly learned how to cook the British dishes. He never had a better home cooked meal before he met Cora.

When he entered the kitchen, he saw the wedding album on the table. He smiled and walked over to her. Gave a quick kiss and pressed the flowers in her hand. “For you.” He said.

Cora kissed his cheek. “Thank you. They are beautiful.” She put them in a vase and put out the dish on the table. Robert was already seated.

“What are your plans for tonight?” He asked.

He saw Cora’s face change for a second, before she answered. “Your mother invited me over to one of her social evenings.”

“Cora!” Robert said annoyed. “My mother is only trying to get you in to the society.”

Cora sighed. “I know she means well….”

“What do you mean, she means well! For heavens sake, my mother wants to help you.”

“No Robert. She doesn’t. She wants to shape me into someone I am not.” Cora sounded angry now.

“You knew what was expected of you, when you married me!” Robert pushed his chair back and walked away.

“Robert, you didn’t eat anything! Robert?” Cora was steaming. She had slaved herself in the kitchen to make him a nice dinner and he barely touched it. She threw his plate into the sink.

+++

“Cora? Have you met Lady Manville before?” Violet asked, when an unknown woman entered the sitting room.

Cora stood up, straightened her pants, and put out her hand. “How lovely to meet you Lady Manville, I am Cora.” She was happy she had changed her jeans for a pantsuit.

The lady she shook hands with pulled up her nose and turned around. “Another American girl.” She said under her breath.

“May I remind you that this lady is my daughter-in-law.” Violet said.

Cora looked at her in surprise, this was the first time Violet stood up for her. But according to the look on Violet’s face, Cora should not count on this too much.

Lady Manville turned around and said: “Ah, you married Lord Grantham.”

“Indeed, I did.” Cora answered

Some more women entered the sitting room, Cora got introduced to all of them. But after three names she already lost track of all the names. She was relieved when she saw Rosamund enter the room. Rosamund was Robert’s sister, and recently had become a widow. Her husband Marmaduke had suddenly died.

Rosamund walked over to Cora and kept her company the whole evening. Around 23.00 o’clock Violet finally announced the ending of the evening. The chauffeur was already waiting, Cora got in and let out a sigh of relief when the door closed. Evenings like this were really tiring.

+++

John had invited Robert over for a drink after the meeting, they went to a pub to get some beers.

“How is Cora doing?” John asked.

Robert just emptied his pint and ordered another one. “She is fine.”

John looked at Robert. “Is she settling in? It must be strange moving from America to the UK.”

“She is a strong woman, she will get used soon. I just wish she would make some friends.”

“Robert. You know as well as I do, how hard it is to make friends in the upper class. Especially as an American girl. You need to help her.”

Robert gave John an annoyed look. “I am helping her. I am taking her to all the events a plus one is invited. But she clings onto me those whole evenings.”

“Sometimes I truly doubt why she married you!” John emptied his pint and said goodnight.

Robert stared at his glass, was he in the wrong here?

+++

Very late into the night, Robert crawled into bed, and scooted close to Cora. His fingers slid under her shirt, and he kissed her collarbone. This woke Cora up. She swatted away his hand.

“Robert, you are drunk. Go to sleep.” She turned on her side facing away from Robert.

Robert grabbed her buttocks and squeezed them, ignoring her words. He moved his hand to her hip and turned Cora on her back. He moved on top of her.

Cora squirmed underneath him, but he pinned her down. “We are married for one month now and you are still not pregnant!” He removed her pants, but when he tried sliding down her underwear, she firmly pressed her knees together.

“Not tonight! Go to sleep.” She pushed Robert of her and pulled up the duvet.

Robert gave up and very annoyed laid down on his side of the bed.

It took you a year!, chapter 2

Robert woke up, he heard Cora next to him. According to her breathing sounds she was still asleep, she was facing towards him.

He looked at her, she was a true beauty. He got lucky. He married her for her money, but her looks were a nice addition. She was in a way irresistible, but last night he only wanted to sleep. She must have been disappointed.

He scooted closer to her and kissed her neck. She got goosebumps but didn’t wake up. His hand rested on her hip. He moved his kisses to her cheek, which woke her up.

She had a startled look in her eyes, and Robert felt instant regret. Why did he wake her up like this? He pulled back a little but let his hand where it was. “Good morning, did you sleep well?” He asked.

Cora scraped her throat. “I did, and you?”

Robert leaned in again and kissed her lips, carefully and firm at the same time. He felt her answering the kiss and that encouraged him to explore more. He moved his tongue to find hers, he noticed this was the first time she was kissed in this way.

He moved his body, so he was on top of Cora. He pulled her shirt over her head and looked at her upper body. She was so slim, and her small breasts were firm. He put his hands on her breast and circled her nipple with his fingers. Her body reacted on it, by showing goosebumps all over her skin. He smiled, she liked this. He started kissing her skin around her breasts. Cora arched her back from pleasure. Robert felt himself grow from excitement. He pulled hers and his pants down and positioned himself to enter her.

Cora breathed in through her teeth, he was hurting her. He stopped with his movements. “Are you alright?”

Breathless she answered: “yes, yes, I am. Don’t stop!”

Robert started moving again. His thrusts strong and powerful. Once he released himself inside her, he laid down on his side of the bed. Breathing heavily.

Cora turned on her side and scooted against him, but Robert stood up. “I will take a shower.” He said and closed the bathroom door.

This afternoon, he and Cora would go to the Tuscany for their honeymoon. They should leave soon.

+++

Cora stayed behind in the bed. Confused, Robert seemed really eager to share the bed with her. But the moment he finished, it was done. He didn’t give her the chance to reach her high. She felt unsatisfied, but maybe that was the feeling that belonged to having intercourse with someone.

She decided to get out of bed, wrapped herself in her bathrobe and started making breakfast. She found bread, so she made toast with jam. Not knowing what Robert normally ate, she hoped she made the right choice.

She put two cups of water in the microwave and waited for Robert to come down. It didn’t take long, but he gave her a disgusted look when she handed him his cup. “What’s wrong?” She asked.

“Don’t tell me you made tea in the microwave?” He poured out the tea and picked up the electric kettle. “Darling, you have a lot to learn. Tea, you make with a kettle.”

Cora’s cheeks coloured. She had heard about the English and their tea, but she hadn’t expected that Robert would be so passionate about his tea. “I made toast with jam, I hope you will like that.”

“I will teach you how to make a proper English breakfast. A breakfast like that should be part of a special day, and this is a special day.” He smiled at her. “Our first day married.”

Another thing she didn’t do right, she thought. “Are your bags already packed, or should I help?”

“They are packed and waiting next to yours.” Robert stepped towards Cora, gave her a quick kiss. “I will be in my office for a while, I need to finish some stuff before we can leave.”

“But you didn’t eat anything?” Cora said.

Robert picked up a piece of toast and his cup with the newly made tea, showed it to her and walked out of the kitchen.

+++

The chauffeur drove Cora and Robert to the airport. When the driver opened the door and put out his hand to help Cora out, she was a bit shocked when he said. “My lady.” to her. She married and Earl, she knew that, but hadn’t realised she would be a lady. Of course, it was stupid she didn’t realise that. Because Robert’s title was, what made Martha force her to marry him. Was Robert also forced into marrying her? She thought.

Robert took both suitcases and walked towards the check-in desk. After dropping of the bags, he took Cora’s hand. “Our honeymoon has definitely started.” He leaned in to quickly kiss her.

Robert was confusing her. He acted like they were happily married and at the same time, she missed something with him. She felt butterflies every time she looked at him, but she didn’t see that in Robert’s face. When he looked at her, she saw mostly lust, but there was no real love in his eyes.

Cora followed Robert to the lounge, they were early and would have some spare time.

“Cora, I will finish my work. You will enjoy yourself, right?” He didn’t give her time to answer. His laptop was already open, and he wasn’t available anymore. She let out a deep sigh and walked around the lounge and finally sat down opposite of Robert to read her book.

+++

Robert had booked the royal suite in Castel Monastero in Sienna. The room was enormous and luxurious. It was late at night when they arrived. Robert ordered room service and after dinner he said he wanted to go to sleep.

Cora changed into her nightwear. For this honeymoon, she had bought a special set. Robert looked at her with a lot of approval in his eyes. Cora hungered for his touch, but he just gave a kiss and got into bed and turned towards the wall. Cora got in on her side and laid there staring at the ceiling.

She wished she could press her face against his back, she wanted to taste him, smell him.

+++

Robert stared at the wall. He knew he wasn’t fulfilling his manly duties, but he felt guilty for marrying Cora. He saw the love in her eyes, but he didn’t feel the same way. He needed the money to safe the business. His mother had made it very clear to him, that the money would not be enough, he needed a son to pass on the title. He was the 7th earl of Grantham, the 2nd one without the estate. What if he used Cora’s money to buy back the estate? Her dowry was large enough to do that. He made a note inside his head to call his mother Violet in the morning to ask her opinion about this idea.

He heard Cora’s soft snores, she was asleep. He turned around to look at her. Her face was delicate. Her eyelashes long, with her eyes closed they rested on her cheekbones. She was a sweet and darling young woman. She was just three years younger than he was. She would celebrate her 21st birthday this July. He knew they would form a good friendship. He just wished he could make her happy in the way she needed.

It took you a year!, chapter 1

We meet Cora (20) and Robert (23) on their wedding day. Robert married Cora for her money, will he love her one day. Can he make her happy?

Cora and Robert said goodbye to all the guests and got in the car. Robert had rented a limousine with driver for their special day. Robert helped Cora with her huge train and sat next to her. Cora’s mother insisted she would wear a dress with a long train, so she would truly fit in this, almost, royal family.

Cora was introduced to Robert by her mother. Martha had always hoped Cora would marry up into the high society of London. Born an American girl, she didn’t know anything about the rich people in England. One day her mother announced they would go on a trip to London, for a party. Cora had no other option then just follow.

When they entered the ballroom, Cora was scared by all the people looking at her. She was wearing a sparkling black dress, which was very form fitting. She had a slim figure and was just above average height. Her dark curls where in a bun resting in her neck. She had felt like a princess, but now got the feeling she was over dressed. The woman in the room, all had plane dresses, no sparkles anywhere. She had asked her mother, if she should change. But before Martha could answer, they were approached by a tall, good-looking man. He asked if Cora’s dance card was already full.

The rest of the evening she had danced with this man. He was incredibly good looking, with his dark hair and blue eyes. It had turned out, he knew she was coming tonight, and he was very interested in her.

Her mother was very pleased, that she was spending the evening with him, what surprised Cora. What did her mother, know about this man, that she didn’t? But she decided to enjoy this feeling. Every time their eyes locked, she felt butterflies in her stomach.

And now it was a year later, and they just said: I do, to each other. The marriage was arranged in an old fashioned way. Cora had lived with her mum in New York until the week before the wedding. Her mother had rented an apartment in London. Her dress got a last fitting, and she went with Robert to see the venue he had chosen.

Cora had inherited a huge amount from her late father, which was part of the marriage agreement. Her money would be pumped into Robert’s company. It was a family business, that started around 100 years ago. The company helped estates around the country to keep up with their tenants. Cora hadn’t known this, the day she said yes to Robert’s marriage proposal, but he only wanted to marry her for her money.

Robert came from a noble family, his official title was Earl of Grantham. His forefathers had owned an estate called Downton Abbey, but due to money problems, the estate was sold. His grand father started the current company, to help other estates to keep up with the costs.

Cora had tried to get out of this arrangement, but as her mother pointed out. She was in love with this man, and it didn’t matter if he wouldn’t love her back or not. She would be accepted into the high society of London and would have a glamorous live. Love wasn’t that important Martha said, referring to her own marriage.

“Was this day, what you had hoped for?” Cora asked Robert when he closed the car door.

“It was. Did you enjoy it?”

Cora leaned in on Robert and took his hand in hers. “I did. It was wonderful.” She stretched her neck to kiss him.

Robert kissed her back, but like during the ceremony, she felt it was a forced kiss. She took in a deep breath and rested her head against his shoulder.

+++

Robert opened the door to his apartment. “Welcome home Mrs. Crawley.” He said.

Cora walked into the home, it felt strange. This was her home from now on. She would spend her days together with Robert here. She lingered in the hallway, not sure what Robert was expecting of her.

He took her hand and guided her to the living room. “Do you need help taking off your dress?” He asked.

Cora was relieved with his question. She worried since they got into the limousine, how she would get out of the dress. The dress was laced up at the back and there was no way she was going to be able to reach it. “Yes please.” She said, being shy. She just realised he was going to see her in her underwear. He was the first man to see her without her clothing, besides her doctor.

They entered the bedroom, Cora laid out her bathrobe, so she could wrap herself in it, as soon as the dress was off.

Robert started with the laces, it took him some time to get them all loose. She felt his fingers tremble. He was nervous too, she thought. Was she his first? She didn’t know. They didn’t talk about that, they didn’t talk at all, she corrected herself

Finally, Robert managed to get all the laces and buttons loose, he slid down her dress and gave her, his hand so she could step out of it. She felt very naked, although she was wearing special underwear. She had wanted to look beautiful even without her dress. According to Robert’s look in his eyes, he liked what he was seeing.

Quickly Cora put on her bathrobe and took the dress to hang on a coat hanger. She walked into the bathroom, which was an ensuite, to take out the 100 hairpins. She didn’t count them, but it took an eternity to get her hair loose. She wanted to take a shower but wasn’t sure if Robert was alright with that. She popped her head around the corner. “Is it alright, if I take a shower?”

Robert looked up from the magazine he was reading. “Of course. Why would you ask?”

Cora drew back into the bathroom, feeling foolish. Why was she behaving this childish? Of course, she didn’t need permission to take a shower.

+++

All freshened up, she got into bed next to Robert. She wanted to crawl against him, but she wasn’t sure if he would like that. So, she just laid still on her side of the bed. Robert was still reading the magazine.

He put the magazine down and turned towards Cora. He put his hand on her stomach and kissed her. “I know the wedding night should be special, but I am just too  tired.” He said apologetically.

In a way Cora was relieved. She never been with a man and wasn’t sure if she knew what to do. “That’s alright, we can go to sleep.”

Robert turned back on his other side. Put out the lights and fell asleep. Cora was still lying there awake, feeling confused. She had heard from friends, that they had a steaming wedding night and here she was lying next to her, now husband, while he was sleeping. She turned on her side, facing away from Robert and tried to catch some sleep. Robert was just tired she thought.

I loved you once?!, chapter 16

Cora leaned in on Robert, they were sitting on the settee together. Robert had both arms wrapped around Cora, he had put on some music of Ludovico Einaudi and for a while they just sat there. Enjoying each other and the music.

“I can’t tell you how relieved I am.” Cora said breaking the silence.

Robert was rubbing his thumb over Cora’s arm. “I feel the same darling. She is back home. We can breathe again. We should go down and check on the girls.”

Cora nestled a little bit more into Robert. “Can we stay here for a little longer. I missed this feeling so much, being safely in your arms.” She turned her head to look at Robert.

“Of course, we can.” Robert kissed her lips softly. “We can listen to Charlotte’s story later tonight.”

“Thank you.” Cora rested her head against Robert’s shoulder.

+++

Charlotte walked upstairs. She needed to talk to her parents, but they had left her alone with her sisters. She appreciated that, but she wanted to talk with them. She opened the door to their bedroom and found her parents asleep on the settee. After Sybil’s story about them separating, this was a wonderful sight. Her mother curled up against her father. His arms safely wrapped around her. She had hoped to have this with Kieran, but it had turned out totally different. If she hadn’t run into Sybil, she would have never gotten back. Charlotte stepped into the room and put a blanket over them. Her mother moved when she tugged the blanket in around her shoulder but didn’t wake up.

Robert opened his eyes when Cora moved. “Charlotte?” He said in a whisper, to not wake up Cora.”

“We will talk tomorrow dad. Just sleep for now. I will be here.” Charlotte said.

“Sleep well darling. I am glad to have you home again.”

Carefully Robert moved Cora, so he could get up. He picked Cora up and walked her over to the bed. She opened her eyes when Robert laid her down again.

“Robert?” She asked confused.

“Sssst, go back to sleep. Everything is well.” He kissed her forehead and crawled against her on his side of the bed. He fell into a deep sleep, the moment he rested his head against Cora’s back.

+++

“Mama?” Cora got woken up by a soft voice. Charlotte was standing next to her bed, putting down a cup of tea on her nightstand.

Cora got up and pulled Charlotte close. “I was afraid it would be a dream, but you are truly home.”

“I am, Mama. I am.” Charlotte said, burying her face in her mother’s chest. Feeling her arms around her, reassured her. Everything was going to be alright. Whatever happened she was going to be alright.

Cora brushed her back and hair with her free hand. The other one she held firmly on Charlotte’s back as if, when she loosened her grip, Charlotte would leave.

“I am sorry, Mama.”

“No, don’t be. It is alright. You are back and that is what is important.”

Robert had woken up and cupped Charlotte’s cheek. “Darling, your mother is right. We are happy you are back home.”

“Can you tell us what happened?” Cora asked.

Charlotte crawled onto the bed and sat down in between her parents, facing both of them.

“Kieran, wanted to live together and he had convinced me, that would never happen, as long as I was living near to you. He told me we were going to Ireland, to live with his parents. I agreed to that, because Papa would never accept Kieran.” Charlotte stopped for a second and looked at Robert.

He just breathed in but didn’t say anything. He felt Cora’s fingers touch his hand.

“Once we were on our way, Kieran changed directions and we were all of the sudden driving towards Scotland. Kieran said we would be found in Ireland and that you, dad, would drag me back. I believed him. He had taken my phone away. He forbade me to make contact with anybody I knew. Once we were in Scotland, he still denied me, my phone back and at that moment I started to worry. It was never my intention to disappear completely.” Charlotte looked at Cora. “Mama, I mean that. I truly thought, I would tell you where we were as soon as we would stop driving.

Cora took Charlotte’s hand in hers but didn’t interrupt.

“I wasn’t allowed to go anywhere the first days and had to stay in the house. After a few weeks, I was finally allowed back out. He gave me a simple phone, so I could tell him where I was during the day. He got very angry on days I forgot the phone.” Charlotte saw her dad’s face. “Dad, he never did anything to me. He never laid a hand on me, he was just very demanding.”

“How did Sybil, know where you were?” Robert asked.

Charlotte looked up. “She didn’t. It was all a coincidence. Sybil and Tom happened to end up in the village, Kieran and I were living. I can’t describe the feeling when I saw Sybil.” Charlotte stopped to swallow away her tears. Cora brushed a tear of her cheek and smiled at her.

“I know, that this was the moment, I could go back home. I was really scared. But knew Tom would talk with his brother. And he did. Kieran left, to go to Ireland, he said Daddy would kill him, if he ever came back to London.”

Cora looked at Robert, she knew Robert would indeed flip, the moment he saw Kieran. “Darling, I am sorry you had to go through this. But you are back home and safe now and we will take care of you. Do you want breakfast?”

“Thank you, Mama and Papa, thank you for letting me come home.”

Robert leaned forward to hug Charlotte. “You are our darling, daughter and will always have your home here with us.

+++

After breakfast, Cora had gone back upstairs to take a shower and change for the day. She heard somebody come into the bathroom. It was Robert. “I can use a shower as well.” He said with a cheeky smile on his face.

Thank you all for reading this story. All the reviews, truly mean a lot to me. I am working on a next story already, so in a few days, I will start uploading that one. Hopefully that one will be liked by you too.

I loved you once?!, chapter 15

“We are almost home.” Tom woke up Sybil. “Do your parents know?”

“I just texted them, (that) we would arrive sometime today.”

“But your dad will be at the office.” Tom said surprised.

“Oh, I totally forgot. Hmm yeah, then we have to let them know. I will text him.”

+++

“Robert? You are home early.” Cora asked surprised, turning around to kiss him.

“I got a call from Sybil, she and Tom are almost home. I wanted to be here to hear all the stories.”

“Can’t wait to hold her in my arms again.” She said while putting the mop away. “Did they tell you what time they will be here?”

“Sybil, said they were about 3 hours away.”

“Good. Then I have time to bake an apple pie.” There was a big smile on her face.

“The thought of her coming home is cheering you up already.” Robert kissed her cheek and went upstairs to work in his study.

Cora was indeed cheered up just by the fact Sybil was almost home. They only needed to find Charlotte now. She was planning on asking Robert to come with her to Scotland to search. The time of waiting here at home was over.

+++

Mary came home and walked into the kitchen, where Cora just took the pie out of the oven.

“What is there to celebrate?” She asked.

Cora looked up. “Sybil is almost home, that calls for a celebration.”

“She is just coming back from a holiday, nothing special.” Mary sneered.

Cora chose to ignore this comment. “How is Matthew?” She changed the subject.

Mary’s cheeks coloured.

“Mary? Tell me? Something happened.” Cora smiled at Mary.

“I think Matthew is planning on a proposal.” Mary said.

“Oh, darling. that is wonderful. How do you know?” Cora transferred the pie to a cooling rack.

“He asked me what my ring size is. He said because he inherited a ring from his grandmother and wants to make it fit. But I don’t believe that is the reason, he wanted to know my ring size.”

“Just act surprised when he truly asks you.” Cora hugged her daughter, she took her face in her hands. “I am happy for you, darling.” She kissed her forehead.

“What are we happy about?” Edith asked. “Are we getting an apple pie, what a treat.”

Before Cora or Mary could answer, she had walked on.

+++

Cora and Robert were sitting in the living room, both reading a book. Although Cora was just staring at the pages and then on her watch.

“Darling, she is coming. Settle down.” Robert looked up from his book.

He startled Cora.

“You think I do not notice that you are not reading. You haven’t turned one page since we are sitting here.”

Cora let out a deep sigh. “I know, but I can’t help myself.”

Robert walked over and wrapped both arms around her. Cora buried her face in Robert’s neck. “Thank you for being here for me.”

Robert lowered his head to look her in the eye. “Always darling, always.” He pressed his lips against hers.

“It is good to see you two back together again, but please do this in private.” Sybil’s voice sounded through the living room.

Cora jumped up. “Sybil, you are back.” With big steps she had reached her and held her in a tight hug.

Robert shook Tom’s hand. “Good to see you back again. How was the holiday?”

Once Cora had let go of Sybil she said: “I made an apple pie, do you want a piece and some tea?”

“We would love to,” Tom said.

Cora walked out of the living room, she opened the door and let out a high-pitched scream and started sobbing. Robert looked at Sybil and Tom, while he stood up and walked over to Cora.

He found her in the hallway hugging a girl, he got confused for a second and then it clicked. It was Charlotte. Tears were streaming down his face, he hugged both Charlotte as Cora. Cora’s scream had lured Mary and Edith out of their bedrooms, and they also started screaming from joy, when they saw Charlotte.

“Charlotte, you are back!” Mary screeched while running down the stairs. Cora was still holding on to her girl, but Robert let go to make room for Mary and Edith. He softly pulled on Cora’s arm, she let go of Charlotte.

“I can’t believe you are real.” Cora said through her tears.

“I hope the tears are happy tears.” Charlotte said timid.

“Oh darling, yes they are. They definitely are. You can’t know how much we have missed you.”

“How did you come home? Where is Kieran?” Robert asked.

“Charlotte please sit down in the living room, I baked a pie. Do you want a cup of tea? We will talk in a minute.” She took Robert’s hand and pulled him into the kitchen.

“Darling!” She started. “Please, don’t be angry or anything.” She had seen the anger in Robert’s eyes. Cora took his hands in hers and saw his eyes change.

Robert took in a deep breath. “It is hard, but I will try to just listen. You can ask the questions.”

Cora gave him a quick kiss. “Thank you.” She walked back out to the living room with a serving tray. Robert followed her.

They found their girls sitting on the floor, close to each other. They didn’t notice Cora and Robert enter. Cora put down the tray and forced Robert to walk away with her.

“Leave them be. We will get our answers later, they need time to talk.”

“But, Cora! We need answers too. I need to know if that scumbag did something to her.”

“I want to know the same things. But we will get her answers later. Give her time with her sisters, just look at them. This is a picture we don’t see a lot, all four together in harmony.” She leaned in on Robert.

He wrapped his arm around her. “You are right, we will go upstairs and wait for her to come and tell us.”

I loved you once?!, chapter 14

“We are not forcing you to go back home. I am only asking you to let Mama and Papa know where you are and what you are going to do.” Sybil said.

“Papa will force me home.” Charlotte said, playing with the paper straw in her hand.

“Mama is worried sick and they almost broke up, because they were so worried.

“They did not?” Charlotte looked up.

Sybil nodded.  “They did, it is only since last week they are staying in the same house again.”

“You said Mama is worried sick? Is she truly?”

“You know, how Mama reacts on stress. She had a migraine when we discovered you left and ever since she is walking around with a headache. And Mary told me, that when I went on this holiday, she got the worst attack in years. So yeah, Mama is worried sick.”

Charlotte’s skin was pale. “I never thought about how worried Mama would be and our parents separated? That’s almost impossible.”

“Not only Mama! Papa too and what about Mary, Edith and me! Charlotte, you got us all worried.” Sybil took Charlotte’s hand. “Luckily Papa and Mama have found each other again.

“Should I call Mama?”

“And what are you going to tell her? That you are coming home? Or………?”

“I think I want to go home.” Charlotte said very softly.

+++

Cora was busy in the garden when she felt a hand on her lower back. She looked up, it was Robert. He gave her a quick kiss. Cora brushed her hands against he apron. “Hi” she said smiling.

Her heart fluttered when Robert kissed her. She truly missed him, and it was good to have him home. It wasn’t the same as before, but the fact he came to greet her felt good.

“Sybil is coming home tomorrow, do you want to cook something special?” Robert asked her.

“Hmm, we can also order food when she is back home. I can’t wait for her to be back here.”

“Darling.” Robert’s hand still rested on her back. “Sybil is coming home, you don’t have to be scared about that. They texted that they are halfway already.”

Cora let out a deep sigh: “You are right. But I think I will not be assured until she is back in my arms.”

Robert pulled her close. “I know how you feel. I feel the same.”

Cora pushed herself back a little to look into Robert’s eyes. “You do?”

Robert had a guilty look on his face. “I do, but I didn’t want you to know. You had enough worries.”

“Oh darling, why didn’t you tell me.”

“We weren’t really communicating, and now I am back, I didn’t want to worry you anymore.”

Cora wrapped both arms around him and hugged him so tight he had trouble breathing. His arms firm around her body. They stood there for a while

They were disturbed by the scraping of a throat.

Violet had watched them for several minutes, but when she realised, they weren’t going to let go of each other, she interrupted.

Quickly Robert let go of Cora, he felt like a naughty schoolboy, which was nonsense, because he was married to Cora and was allowed to hug her.

“I have news.” Violet started.

“Do you want some tea?” Cora asked.

Violet said down on the chair, Robert pulled back for her. “That would be lovely.”

When Cora returned, she quickly sat down next to Robert.

“What is your news, Mama?” Robert asked.

“They have found the place where Kieran and Charlotte spent the last months.”

Cora’s eyes grew big, and Robert grabbed her hand. “What, are you serious?”

“I am, do I ever joke?” Violet said in the irritated voice she used a lot. “But they weren’t there anymore.”

“Oh no, do they know where they are right now?” Robert asked.

“That is the problem. They aren’t together anymore. Kieran left alone, and people in the village have seen Charlotte get in a different car with two people in it.”

“No, no. NO.” Cora sobbed. “Where did he send her too? What did he do?”

Robert got Cora’s hand firm in his hand. “Do they know where Kieran went to?”

“Unfortunately, not, but we suspect he is going to Ireland this time. We will set up a post in the area where his parents live.” Violet said.

“So, we have to just wait and see what happens, again.” Robert said. “Mum, do you want to have dinner here?”

+++

Both Mary and Edith decided to eat at home, to be with granny. They loved Violet, and they were chatting for a very long time after dinner.

Cora was in the kitchen cleaning up when Robert walked in. “Why didn’t you eat?”

Cora looked up.

“You think I didn’t notice, but there wasn’t much on your plate. Cora, you have to stop this. You need to eat normal again.”

Cora lowered her gaze. “I am just not hungry.”

Robert laid his hand on hers. “Darling, I know you are nervous, but we need you to stay healthy.”

“I don’t have an eating disorder. I am just not hungry.” Cora’s eyes shot fire.

“I am not saying that, but you must admit. You lost a lot of weight. And to be honest, there wasn’t much you could lose. Darling.” Robert put his hands on her shoulders.” I am not saying this to upset you, but I can’t handle this, worrying about Charlotte and also about you not eating.”

Cora’s head jerked up. “Oh darling, that’s not what I want. You don’t have to worry about me, truly. I will force myself to eat more. I will. Oh Robert, I am sorry. I am so sorry.”

She took his head in her hands and kissed him. He answered passionately. She pressed her body against his and kissed him again. His hands firm on her back, her hands in his neck.

“How I missed you.” Robert murmured.

Cora just smiled and kissed him again, longer this time until they both needed air.

They didn’t notice, Violet coming into the kitchen to say goodbye. They didn’t notice Mary and Edith both going upstairs. They just noticed each other.

I loved you once?!, chapter 13

“Tom, how are we going to bring Charlotte back.”

“Do you think she wants to come back?” Tom asked.

“Well, maybe not, but she needs to tell Mama and Papa that she is alright. Why didn’t she let us know something.”

“I think Kieran is behind this. As a kid he always had that controlling part. He needed to be in control of everything and if he wasn’t he would rage.”

“Oh my, do you think he hurt Charlotte?” Sybil asked with a scared voice.

“No, that I am positive about. He really likes Charlotte, so he would never do anything to hurt her. He just want her for himself.”

“Can you go talk to him? He will listen to you!” Sybil asked.

“I can 8definitely try.”

+++

“Robert!” Violet entered Robert’s office.

“Mama? What is so important you walk in without knocking?” Robert looked up irritated.

“We might have found Charlotte.” Robert jerked up, but Violet put her hands out. “Well, I have to be specific, they know what area she might be in.”

“Mama, does Cora know this already?”

“I didn’t tell her yet, that is something you have to do. Make her happy again Robert.”

Robert got up and hugged his mother. “Thank you Mama. Are you coming with me, you can tell the details when we are at home.” Without waiting for an answer he walked out of his office.

+++

Cora was doing laundry, when she heard Robert’s voice yelling from downstairs.

“Cora! Cora, where are you? Cora?”

The sound of Robert’s voice made her worried, she hurried down. “What is wrong darling?” Than she saw Violet standing in the hallway, and her heart sunk.” What is the bad news?”

“Why would you think the news is bad?” Violet said on her usual annoyed tone.

Cora looked at Robert confused. He took her hand. “Come into the living room.”

“Robert? Why aren’t you saying what is wrong. You got me worried now.”

“Don’t be.” Sit down please.

Cora sat down, trembling from the tension. Why wasn’t Robert telling her what he knew. Did they find Charlotte, did something bad happen to her.

Robert sat next to her and took her hand in his. “Mama just told me, they might know were Charlotte is.”

“What?” Cora said breathless. “Where? Where is she?”

“Darling, you have to remember the word, might. She is probably in Scotland, they are narrowing the search area now. But they got reports of people seeing her and Kieran.”

“Oh my God, oh my God, I can’t believe it.” Tears were streaming down Cora’s face.

“My men say that they expect to find her in the next two of three days.” Violet said.

Cora wrapped both arms around Robert and burried her face in his neck. “We are getting our girl back.”

Robert brushed her back. “Finding her doesn’t mean we will get her back.” He said softly.

Cora pulled back. “What do you mean?” Why would she not want to come back?”

“She left for a reason, darling. We have to keep that in mind.” Robert’s hands rested on her shoulders.

“You are right. I know.” She lowered her shoulders and let out a deep sigh.

Violet got up. “I leave you two and will say goodnight.”

+++

“Dad, is it true, granny found Charlotte?’ Mary asked while walking into Robert’s office

“They narrowed the area down where she can be, but she isn’t found yet.”

“What if she doesn’t want to come home? How are you and mum going to cope with that?” Mary asked.

“Let just not think about that yet, alright. And please don’t say this to your mother. I already did and that gave her so much anxiety, that I regret my words.”

“But what about you and your anxiety. Are you not worried?”

Robert cupper Mary’s cheek. “Don’t you worry about me. I will be alright.”

“Well I am glad you and mum are talking again.” She turned around and walked away.

+++

Tom was waiting infront of the house Charlotte described, the frontdoor opened and Kieran stepped out.

“How did you find me?” Was his response when he saw Tom.

“We didn’t really. It is just a coincidence we bumped into Charlotte.”

“Of course, you told Cora and Robert already!”

“No, we didn’t, not yet.” Tom looked Kieran in the eye. “Why did you do it?”

“They would never let me be together with her. This was the only option.”

“You didn’t hurt her did you?” Tom asked.

“Tom, you know me better. Of course, I didn’t hurt her.” Kieran sounded surprised

“Alright. But you do realise, that you should give Charlotte a choice.” Tom said.

“What choice? Why? She is here with me and we will buil our life’s together.”

Tom let out a deep sigh. “Kieran, is this really what Charlotte wants? Did you ask her?”

The look at Kieran’s face told Tom enough. “Let Charlotte go for a drink with Sybil.”

Kieran gave in and agreed.

+++

“What are we going to do, when Charlotte doesn’t want to come back?” Robert asked while getting into bed.

Cora looked up from her book. She was sitting in the armchair. “I am not sure.” She said with a uncertain voice.

“We cannot force her to come back.” Robert continued.

Cora closed her book and put it on the side table. She folded her hands in her lap. “I just want to know where she is. And if she is alright.” A tear dropped on her cheek.

Robert got out of bed and walked over. He sat down on the arm rest and took her hands in his. “Charlotte will be fine. I am sure.”

“I am so scared, Kieran has done something to her.” She breathed in shakily.

Robert kissed the top of her head. “Let’s not think about that. We are making ourselves crazy. She will want to get in contact and she will be unhurt.

Cora rested her head against Robert’s chest, his steady heartbeat always calmed her down. She looked up and saw Robert looking down. Slowly she stretched her neck, he did the same and their lips touched, very briefly and quick. Both were startled, and had a confused smile on their lips. Cora rested her hand against Robert’s chest, her fingers played with the fabric of his pyjamas.

“We should get some sleep.” Robert said, while pulling her up and walking over to the bed. Cora almost crawled into Robert, when he got next to her. She needed to be close to him. It was months ago their lips had touched and although it was short, it felt heavenly.
