When life interrupts, chapter 24

Patrick was in his carrier against Cora’s chest. Robert hadn’t said where they were going. But here they were in the tube. Martha had also come along, and it seemed she knew what they were going to do, and it irritated Cora that she had no clue. She didn’t like surprises and especially not right now. They needed to figure out how to arrange the Barcelona story. She could join Robert in the first months. She had two more months left of her maternity leave. She could go with him.

“Next stop is ours.” Robert touched her shoulder

Cora shook up from her musings. Her hand rested on Patrick’s back. She loved this feeling. Patrick was always so calm when he was in his carrier. She moved her hand and brushed over his head. What made him smile. Cora smiled also and kissed the top of his head. “I love you.” She whispered. In the corner of her eye, she saw Robert and Martha getting up, and she quickly followed them.

“Robert, can you please tell me what we are going to do here?”

Robert wrapped his arm around her waist. “You will see that in a couple of minutes. We should go this way.” He started walking while putting his hand in his pocket.

Cora sighed. She regonized the area. It was Hammersmith, or already Chiswick. She could not figure out why they were there and why her mother had to come too. She hooked her arm into Robert’s and followed next to him.

They stopped in front of a house. “What do you think?” Robert asked.

“What should I think? I do not know why we are looking at this place.” Cora answered.

“Let’s go inside.” Was Robert’s answer, and he walked to the front door.

Cora reluctantly followed. She would have loved to know if they were visiting someone. She would have brought something for them. But when Robert opened the door, she got even more confused. “Why do you have a key to this house?” She asked.

Robert stepped inside and turned around. “Welcome home.” He said with a big smile on his face.

“Home? Oh no, Robert, do not tell me you bought this house.”

Robert stepped closer. “Technically, it isn’t home yet. But it could be after today. Your mother found this place.”

Cora looked at her mother. “Why didn’t you tell me about this?”

Before her mother could answer, Robert said. “What do you think? Come let us walk further in and explore.”

“Let me hold Patrick while you two go in.” Martha offered

It was a 5 bedroom house. A big entrance hall with a spacios reception room, living room, library, and kitchen on the ground floor. On the first floor, there was the masterbedroom, with a walk-in dressing room and ensuite bathroom with a steam shower. There was also a guest suite on the same level. On the second floor were three bedrooms, one was also ensuite and a family bathroom. Outside was a large fenced parking place, dubbel garage, and a well maintained large garden.

“What a beautiful house.” Cora said softly when they were back in the entrance hall.

“Do you see yourself living here?” Robert sat down on the grand staircase.

Cora sat down next to him and nodded. “This is a very peaceful place, and yes, I can see ourselves living here. Are you sure we can afford this?”

Robert chuckled. “You will not have one day in your life where you will have to worry about money. There is enough.”

Cora looked at him. “My father made sure I would never have to worry about money, but buying a house this big is of a different caliber.”

“I think you already suspected it, but there is a title attached to my name. My father is a lord, and I will inherit his title.” He looked at Cora. She was fidgeting with her fingers, but she didn’t react. “Our Patrick will also inherit once I die.”

This elicited a response from Cora. She inhaled sharply. “Let’s not think about that and stay in the present.”

“With my title comes a large sum of money. Also, the company is doing extremely well, so yes, we can definitely afford this house. That is, if you still want to move in together?”

“Oh Robert, you know I want to be with you. We will have to face what is coming to us together. And we need a proper house. One where we have enough space for our little one.”

Robert scooted closer so his hip touched Cora’s. He moved his hand to her abdomen. “Maybe, one day, we will have another one growing in there.”

Cora chuckled. “I do not think that will happen soon, I want to feel more like myself again. And especially not with you moving to Barcelona..”

Robert pulled his hand back and looked down at his shoes. “Don’t remind me of that. I wish I did not have to go. How can I leave you and Patrick.”

“Maybe there is a solution?” Cora started.

“Really?” Robert asked in surprise.

Cora took Robert’s hand in hers. “I have two more months left of my maternity leave, Patrick and I can join you.”

Robert closed his fingers around Cora’s hand. What did he do to deserve such a wonderful woman as Cora. She was willing to go with him. “But Cora, I am not sure if I can go back home after two months. And are you sure you just have two months. Isn’t it more like three?”

“I will need some time to prepare for the lessons. I can’t go back to teaching without proper preparation. But why do you think you can’t come back with two months?”

“Brussels took about 6 months before everything was settled enough for me to leave. And I had John and Anna helping me there. I don’t think John will come to Barcelona this time.”

Cora squeezed his hand and got up from the stairs. “Well, let us talk about that later. Patrick will need his feeding soon, and I want to know more about your title. Do I need to call you Baron from now on?”

Robert also rose to his feet and chuckled. “I am surprised you know about titles.”

“What do you mean by that?” Cora said annoyed.

“I didn’t mean that in a condescending way. I just know that titles are not a thing in America. But I will become an Earl once I get my title. We are higher ranked than a Baron. In the past, we had an estate, but times changed, and we are only left with the title.”

“You just said the title was attached to money, so it is more than just a title.”

“Let’s not talk about that. It isn’t important. We have enough. Well, let’s go home and make sure we get this house.”

Cora saw Robert walking towards the door. Why was he getting defensive the moment she talked about money? She shrugged her shoulders and called out for her mother. Martha walked out of the kitchen, and Cora stretched her arms to take Patrick from her. She needed his body against hers. Something in Robert’s demeanour upset her.

When life interrupts, chapter 22

Cora softly brushed over Patrick´s head. This feeling was so wonderful, she thought. This little boy was depending on her, but she needed him too. His warm little body against hers, gave her peace. Every time he latched on; she felt her heartbeat calm down. She took a deep breath, what was Violet trying to do? What did she do wrong? It bothered Cora that Violet was so openly against the relationship between her and Robert. She was glad his father was a lot more welcoming. Patrick was a wonderful man, who gave her the confidence that everything would work out in the end.

“Cora?” Martha’s voice sounded soft when she opened the door. “Is Patrick already asleep?”

Cora looked down and saw his eyes wide open. “He is not done yet, so you can talk normal.”

“How are you feeling?” Martha asked.

Cora raised her eyebrows. Her mother never bothered about her feelings. “I don’t know.” She said softly.

Martha sat down next to Cora. “I wonder why you are taking this beating from Violet. You should stand up for yourself more.”

“Oh Mama.” Cora sighed. “It doesn’t help. I hope she will one day see that I am not that bad person she thinks I am.”

“She will see that soon enough; I will make sure of that.” Martha said.

This shocked Cora, she knew her mother was always standing up for herself, but she never really did that for her, and she wasn’t sure she wanted a clash between her mother and Violet.

“Cora and I will figure this out together, we don’t need our mothers to fight for us.” Robert, walked into the room.

Martha looked up at Robert. “I guess you are right. But Cora is my darling girl, and I will protect her when needed. Now, I say goodnight, I will see you two in the morning.”

“Cora!” Robert walked closer to Cora. “I mean it, we don’t need our mothers to speak for us. We are adults and can figure our lives out, ourselves.”

“I can only agree with you, but the fact is, your mother hates me.”

“She doesn’t hate you!” Robert said.

“It seems like it.” Cora got annoyed that Robert was defending his mother after what happened this evening. “The way she treats me is horrible and I don’t know if I can take much more of it.”

“I will go and have a chat with her, because you are right. She should not treat you the way she does. I want to spend my life with you, and she doesn’t have a say in that.”

Cora got up to put Patrick in his crib, she bend down and kissed him goodnight. She felt Robert standing next to her. He also kissed Patrick goodnight. Cora leaned in on Robert. “Did you mean that?”

“I will definitely go and talk with my mother, do not worry about that.” Robert answered.

She tangled her fingers in Robert’s. “I didn’t mean that part. She turned to look at Robert, who was looking at her with a puzzled look. “I meant the part that you want to spend your life with me.” She felt Robert’s grip on her hand getting stronger.

“With every fibre in my body.” He raised his hand to her chin and stroke with his thumb over her lower lip. “Cora.”

“Sssssst.” Cora kissed Robert’s thumb. “Let’s stop talking.” She got on her tiptoes to kiss him, but just before her lips touched Robert’s, he playfully pulled back. Cora tugged on his arm, to pull him back. But again, just before her lips touched Robert’s he turned his face, and she kissed his cheek instead. “You are torturing me.” She moaned.

Robert lifted her chin and smiled at her. “I know.” He lowered his face and kissed her where her neck touched her chin. His thumb slowly runs down her neck. This gave Cora chills all over her body.

She looped her arm around Robert, she loved that he wasn’t all muscles, she could feel he was a little bit chubbier. She softly squeezed his side, which resulted in Robert scooping her up from the floor. Cora let out a giggle, and at the same time she felt Robert’s mouth on hers.

“You will wake Patrick.” He murmured against her lips.

Cora’s lips curled up in a smile. “So, I have to make noise to be kissed by you, got it.”

Robert softly bit on her lip. “Don’t you dare.” But he said it with a smile and walked out the room, with Cora still in his arms.

+++

Robert poured a cup of coffee for Martha.

“Cora still asleep?” She asked.

“I think she will be up by now, but I let her sleep. I fed Patrick, so she could sleep in.”

Martha had a playful smile on her face. “I guess she needed some extra rest after yesterday evening.”

Robert realised; Martha had heard them. He knew it was risky to please Cora in the hallway, instead of walking directly back to their room. His cheeks coloured.

“Nothing to be ashamed off. Do you have some more of those delicious eggs?”

Robert made eggs benedict for Martha. “I can make some more, if you want.” He was relieved with the change of subject. At that same moment Cora walked into the kitchen, she was still in her morning robe.

“Good morning, did you sleep well.” Martha inquired.

Cora’s cheeks instantly coloured, the look on her mother’s face let her know, she knew what they had done. The doorbell rang, and Cora walked out.

“Saved by the bell.” Martha said under her breath.

+++

“Rosamund?” Cora exclaimed. “I did not know you were coming. I would have been dressed. I am sorry.”

Rosamund stepped inside and kissed Cora on her cheek. “Do not worry about not being dressed, I did not tell you I was coming, but Papa called me, and I wanted to talk to you right away.”

“Oh.” Cora felt her stomach sinking.

“Where is Robert?” Rosamund asked, while taking of her shoes.

“He is in the kitchen with my mother. Rosamund can you please tell me what is wrong.”

“I want to talk to you both, can we sit down in the living room?”

“I will go and get Robert. Do you want a cup of tea?”

“Yes, please.” Rosamund answered.

When life interrupts, chapter 21

Robert walked into the kitchen, Cora was standing at the stove. He stopped and watched her movements. It amazed him how she got back into her figure so fast, after Patrick’s birth. He was now two weeks old, and you could hardly tell Cora had given birth. He had to admit he loved her still fuller breasts, but he knew they would go back to their normal size and he didn’t mind. Cora was perfect the way she was. He stepped closer and put his hands on her hips, he wanted to kiss her cheek, when he saw how tense she was. “Cora? What is the matter?”

Cora shook her head. “Never mind me, this is just nerves.”

“Nerves? For what?”

Cora turned around, Robert’s hands were still resting on her hips. “Your mother is coming over tonight.”

Robert was confused, why was Cora so nervous, just because his mother was coming? Then it dawned on him, Martha and Violet would meet. Robert moved his hands to Cora’s shoulders. “Sweetheart, don’t worry too much. It will all go well tonight.”

Cora shook her head again. “I am not so sure about that. Your mother will criticise me, and my mother will react to that.”

“You forget that my father is also coming, he will calm Mama down.”

Cora chuckled, she put her hand on Robert’s cheek and kissed him. “We will see what happens. Now let me finish this Beef Wellington.” She turned back around.

Robert kissed Cora’s neck. “All will be fine.”

“How do you feel about your daughter living in London?” Violet asked Martha.

Martha was filling her plate with mashed potatoes and stared at Violet. “What should I feel about that?”

Cora tried to catch Robert’s eyes, he was sitting opposite her and was chatting with his father. Nervously she watched what was brewing between her mother and Violet.

“Well, I know I wouldn’t like it to see Robert move to America.”

“You would not?” Martha said.

“No. Every time I meet up with an American, I’m reminded of the virtues of the English.”

“You do realise, my American” Martha empathised the word American. “Daughter granted you with an heir?”

Cora scraped her throat; this was going in the wrong direction. Why didn’t Robert hear what his mother was saying? “Mama, Mrs. Crawley doesn’t mean it that way.” She tried.

“Oh, my dear, you are wrong. I do mean it.” Violet bitched.

This grabbed Robert’s and Patrick’s attention.

“Dearest, let’s keep it down tonight. We are here to enjoy a nice dinner with our son and darling daughter-in-law.” Patrick said to his wife.

Cora felt her cheeks burning up. This was even worse than what she had expected.

“She.” Violet’s eyes pierced into Cora’s. “Isn’t my daughter-in-law yet.”

“Mama!” Robert raised his voice. “This is enough. Cora never did anything wrong to get treated this way. I love and adore her, and I hope you can be decent enough to accept my choice. I am glad Papa seems to see how wonderful Cora is.”

“Well let’s see if she stays this time when you go to Spain.”

Cora’s head snapped towards Robert. “Spain? Are you going to Spain?” Why hadn’t he told her this?

“I haven’t agreed to anything yet, Mama. I did not have the chance to talk this over with Cora. And I do not appreciate, you trying to put a wig in between our relationship. Cora?” Robert looked in her direction. “I wanted to talk to you about this.”

“I think it is time to leave you two alone.” Patrick said, getting up from the table. “My dear, we stirred enough for tonight. We will go home.” He walked over to Cora and kissed her cheek. “You are welcome in this family.” He said very softly and squeezed her hand.

It was a relief to Cora that Robert’s father seemed to be a decent man, but how was she ever going to get accepted by Violet?

Martha quietly got up. “I will go up, I will see you two tomorrow.”

Robert also got up and sat down next to Cora. He took her hand into his. “Cora? I hope you believe me, when I say this Spain plan is all coming from my mother.”

“Oh, Robert. It doesn’t matter, your mother will never approve of me, she will do whatever she can to get me out of your life. I don’t know what I have done wrong. She disliked me before she even knew who I was.” Brisk, she wiped a tear from her cheek. She didn’t want to cry.

Robert raised his hand and softly stroke Cora’s cheek. “Darling, it doesn’t matter what Mama wants. I want to be with you. I can’t see my life without you and Patrick in it.”

Cora lowered her eyes. “But I can’t follow you to Spain. I finally have a good job here in London and I cannot wait to go back after my maternity leave.”

“I am not asking you to come with me. I am not even sure that I am going. I don’t know what Mama was thinking. And I am so incredibly sorry that she attacked you in this way. She perfectly knows she can hurt you in this moment, because of your hormones.”

“I am not weak Robert.” Cora said suddenly.

“I didn’t mean that, darling. I am sorry. Do you think Mama is only sending me to Spain to hurt us?”

Cora looked up. “What are we going to do now?”

Patrick started crying. “Right now, you are going to feed Patrick and I will clean up this mess. And we will talk about Spain later.”

Cora sighed. Every time it looked like they were finally starting a good conversation something interrupted them. She got up, put her hand on Robert’s shoulder and said. “We need to have that talk tonight.”

Robert put his hand on top of Cora’s and smiled up. “We will, once the kitchen is cleaned up, I come up.”

When life interrupts, chapter 20

“Mum?” Cora asked while they were walking in a nearby park, she was pushing Patrick’s pram. This morning they had breakfast together, and soon after Robert went back to the office. Violet had complained that he was needed. Cora didn’t understand the need, but she kept her mouth shut. They finally had their first real talk that morning and she didn’t want to ruin what was building.

“Yes Cora?” Martha looked at her.

“You said last night, I could ask you for money.” Cora started

“I know what I said.” Martha interrupted.

Cora sighed. She truly loved her mother, but she was sometimes a bit too much. Since she moved to England it was more noticeable. “When I started teaching, you cut my allowance and made me very clear I should not count on your money anymore.”

“Things have changed. You have a decent job now and also, you found a man and have a baby. You are making something from your life now.”

Her mother’s words hurt her. Although she knew she had failed in her mother’s eyes. She didn’t understand why it was that important to her what she did. At least she was working, she had to admit, that this job at the university and the one at the National Gallery gave her more satisfaction. Look at her brother Harold. He was always in trouble, but her mother never said anything.

“Cora. Everything I do is to inspire you to do better. Come, where can we go and look for houses?”

“Now? Oh, Mama, I was hoping to go back home soon.”

“We can look online. You are right, you are still recovering. Where can we get a cab?”

“That is not necessary, from here it is just a 15-minute walk home.” Cora’s breasts were starting to hurt and she knew Patrick would wake up soon for his feeding. But she needed the walk, even though she knew her mother would not stop talking, it would help to clear her head and sort her mind.

+++

*Robert what time will you be home?* Cora texted Robert.

He called her back instead of texting. “I wanted to hear your voice. I am sorry, but I have to miss dinner tonight. Mama arranged a dinner meeting with a new client.”

Cora knew the moment he called there was something wrong. She sighed. “Your mother has the best timing.”

“Cora!” Robert sounded annoyed. “Are you saying my mother did this on purpose?”

Cora knew Violet had done this on purpose, she knew Martha was in London. But she kept her words in, it wasn’t helping to fight with Robert over this. “It doesn’t matter, I hope you will not be home very late?”

“I will do my best, can you give Patrick an extra cuddle from me? I miss him.”

Cora smiled. Robert loved his son so much. “I will do, see you tonight.”

+++

“Cora, it is late. I will go to bed.” Martha got up from the couch. Cora had made dinner and after they had retrieved in the living room.

Cora had hoped to see Robert back before 21.00 o’clock, but it was already 23.00, and still no sign of him. “I go up with you, it is almost time for Patrick’s feeding, he will come soon. I hope Robert is alright.”

“Oh he is, don’t you worry to much.” Martha kissed Cora on her cheek.

Cora followed her mother upstairs to her own bedroom, changed into her pyjamas and got under the covers. She picked up her book from the nightstand. She was reading Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. She wanted to stop thinking about what Violet could do to prevent Robert from being with her.

+++

Robert came home very late. He felt guilty for coming home at this hour. He smirked, home, yes this felt like home. Where ever Cora was, was his home. They should go looking for a place soon, but for now, this was his home. He put his coat on the coat rack and walked upstairs. His mother’s words still ringing in his ears.

He found Cora half upright against the head board, a book open in her lap, but she was asleep. He noticed the front of her shirt was wet. Quietly he walked over and kissed her forehead. Cora jumped up. “Oh I am sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you, but this can’t be comfortable. Did Patrick not wake up for his feeding?” He pointed at her chest.

Cora covered her chest and her cheeks coloured. “I must have fallen asleep, I haven’t heard Patrick. How upset is he?”

Robert put his hands on her shoulders. “Calm down, darling. Patrick is asleep. I think this is his first night sleeping through the night. Do you want me to bring you the pump?” He looked at her chest again and figured her breasts must be hurting. She had mentioned that before.

When he came back up, Cora had just freshened herself up. Eagerly she took the pump from Robert. “Thank you, darling. Will you check on Patrick?”

Robert walked to his bedroom and found Patrick asleep. He stayed for a couple of minutes, just looking at this little wonder. His face was that of an angel he thought. Softly he brushed over his head and kissed him goodnight.

Back in the room, Cora had finished and was already tucked away under the duvet, he crawled in and scooted closer to Cora. “I am sorry for coming home at this hour.” He whispered in her ear.

Cora turned around and wrapped one arm over him. “As long as you don’t do this everyday.” She briefly kissed him and rested her head on his arm. “Sleep tight.”

Robert breathed out, he hadn’t realised he was holding his breath. He was scared of Cora’s reaction. Coming home late, and his mother were bothering him. Although his father had said, that it was time to make his own decisions, it was still hard. He had always listened to his mother and done what she ordered. He should talk with John about this. He didn’t like his mother’s plans, they were made up to break him and Cora up. Was it only her American blood that was bothering her?

He felt Cora’s hand brush over his upper arm and heard her soft voice. “Go to sleep now, stop worrying, whatever it is.”

When life interrupts, chapter 16

I am sorry for the delay in this chapter. I have rewritten it multiple times, I couldn’t find the right pace, but I think I found it. Happy reading.

Cora woke up from Isidor’s cries. She felt a heavy weight on her, it took her a minute to realise it was Robert. After Janet had come, she asked Robert to stay a little bit longer.

Robert had tried to get intimate with her, but he got embarrassed when he realized Cora’s body was, of course, still healing, he had apologised and wanted to leave.

Cora had grabbed his arm and forced him to kiss her. “I may be healing down there, but that doesn’t mean, I don’t want you next to me tonight.”

“Are you sure?” He had asked insecurely.

“100%, your arms around me make me feel safe, so yes please stay.”

Now she was trying to get out of his embrace. Softly she brushed his arm and kissed his cheek. “Robert.” She whispered. She was amazed he did not wake up with Isidor’s cries. She thought about his name and should talk with Robert about it. She wiggled herself out of his arms and saw him curl up in a ball. She bent down and kissed him softly on his head.

+++

Robert stretched his hand out, but only touched cold sheets. He opened his eyes and saw Cora’s side empty. He got up, used the bathroom and went to Isidor’s room. He knew he would find Cora there, and he was right. There she was, sitting in the big armchair with Isidor on her chest, both fast asleep.

He picked up a blanket and draped it over Cora and Isidore. He looked down at her and couldn’t believe his luck. He was back with his Cora and she had said she loved him. What more could he wish for.

A dawning feeling came over him, they needed to tell his parents about Isidor. Oh my, Violet would flip, and he wasn’t sure about his father’s reaction. He had a son out of wedlock and both his parents strongly believed in things being done in the correct order. He sat down and stared at Cora.

He was still staring at her when Cora opened her eyes. “Robert? Everything alright?” Slowly she sat up, to not wake Isidor and touched his leg.

Robert blinked a couple of times, before he answered. “We have to tell our parents about Isidor.”

“We have to tell your parents. My mother knows and will arrive here in London in two days.” Cora said.

“Oh” Robert looked at the floor.

“Robert, my mother knew I was pregnant and I called her last night during one of the feeding moments with Isidor to tell her about his arrival.”

“Of course, your mother knew. I am sorry, I didn’t realise that the whole pregnancy was different for you. How did your mother react?”

Cora got up and put Isidor down in his crib. She walked over to the chair Robert was sitting in and sat down on the armrest. “She was happy you showed up again and she said she can’t wait to meet you.” Cora put her hand on Robert’s arm. “Robert? Why did you name Isidor like this?” Cora said in one breath.

Robert looked up, his eyes big. “What do you mean? I named him after both of our fathers. I thought you would appreciate that?”

“Oh, do not get me wrong. I love that fact but aren’t we sending him into the world to become bullied in his life with this name?”

Robert swallowed. He had not thought of that, he had acted on a whim. And he wanted to honour Cora’s father mostly because she had lost him. “It is too late now.” Robert looked down again.

“You haven’t gone to the register office yet, so his name isn’t set.”

“What would you like to name him?” Robert looked over at the crib, where Isidor was peacefully sleeping.

“Why don’t we switch his names? Patrick Isidor. This way his name will be Patrick, but he is also still named after my father.”

Robert turned his body towards Cora. “That is a wonderful idea.” He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her onto his lap and kissed her.

+++

“Take a deep breath.” Robert said while placing his hand on Cora’s lower back. She was standing in the living room, with Patrick in her arms. Waiting for Violet and Patrick to arrive. “They won’t bite.” He joked.

Cora’s eyes pierced into his. “You are not funny.” The rest got cut off when the doorbell rang, Robert went to open the door.

Cora felt nerves flutter through her body. She was going to meet his parents for the first time, but this setting was all wrong. It should not be in her house and she should not look the way she did. Cora had changed into chino pants and a blouse, but she would have preferred to stay in her sweats. She gave birth two days ago and was not yet feeling normal again. She looked down at Patrick’s sleeping face. “You caused me a lot of pain, but I am happy to have you in my arms.”

The door opened and Robert entered again, Violet and Patrick followed. Cora saw the same sweet expression on Patrick’s face and she knew that Robert took after his father. They had she same eyes and mouth.

“Hello Cora, how wonderful to meet you.” Patrick stepped closer and kissed her cheek. Cora felt his warm hands on her shoulders and she lowered them in relief. “Is this our grandson?” He brushed his finger over Patrick’s cheek.

“Do you want to hold him, sir?” Cora asked, handing him his grandson. She saw his eyes twinkle when he took Patrick in his arms.

“Are you going to say hello?” Patrick turned around to Violet.

Violet stepped closer to him and looked at her grandson’s face. She turned back to Robert. “It’s a darling boy.”

Cora saw Patrick whisper something in Violet’s ear and she turned towards her. The way Violet looked at her gave her chills. “So, you are the one forcing my boy into marriage?”

“What? I, I.” Cora searched for Robert’s eyes for help, but she saw he was frozen. “We haven’t talked about that yet.” She said timidly.

“Darling, you promised me something,” Patrick said very softly to Violet, handing her the baby.

Cora saw Violet’s eyes soften, when Patrick was laid in her arms.

“I can use a cup of tea, what about you?” Patrick looked at Cora.

She was relieved he tried to calm down the situation. “I will make some immediately.” And she walked towards the kitchen.

“Why don’t you help her in the kitchen?” Patrick said.

+++

“Your mother doesn’t like me.” Cora said when they entered the kitchen.

“My mother is just upset, she had planned my future differently.” Robert was hurt by his mother’s reaction. He knew she was stuck in the traditional ways, but he hadn’t expected her to be this cruel towards Cora. He watched while Cora put water in the kettle and prepared the tea cups. He was relieved to see her use a kettle. He stepped closer and put his hands on her hips. “Even if my mother will not like you, I like you and that is all that matters.”

When life interrupts, chapter 13

“Thank you Janet.” Cora touched her arm briefly. They stepped out of the restaurant they had lunch. Cora had asked Janet to help her setup the baby crib. And she had offered to help with the last things she needed to buy.

“I am glad you asked me.” Janet said. “I wasn’t sure if you liked me.”

Cora smiled at Janet. “How we can have the wrong impression of another person. I always thought you were alright with having lunch with me during work hours, but nothing more.

“Well, we cleared that up. You have gained a friend. I have to run now, see you soon.”

“I will see you tomorrow?” Cora said unsure. “At work?”

“No, you won’t. Even if you show up. Charles will send you home. Girl, look at yourself, you are about to give birth to that little one. It is time for your leave.”

Cora felt tears stinging her eyes. It was a long time ago, somebody cared for her in this way. And now even her new boss was concerned about her.

“But I can’t miss out on the money.” Cora protested.

Janet chuckled. “Don’t you worry about that! Maternity leave is mandatory here in the UK. 11 weeks before your due date you are allowed to stop working. You will receive 90% of your average salary.”

Cora’s eyes grew. “I didn’t know I would receive payment.” She moved her hand to her back and stretched. “Not that it would had matter, I had no reason to stop working. It would only add to the stress of raising this little one on my own.”

“I still don’t understand why you didn’t try to reach Robert again.”

“I.” Cora stopped, trying to keep her voice under control. “I don’t know either. But the vibe his mother gave me, made me back off. And if Robert wanted to stay in contact he would have called me.”

“Cora, I don’t know you very long, but I hadn’t expected you to be this clueless. He doesn’t know that you are expecting, please just try and contact him again.”

“No!” Cora said resolutely. “He made it clear when he blocked my number. He doesn’t want to have contact with me. I will raise this little one on my own.” Protectively she wrapped her arms around her belly.

“Well, it is your choice. Know I am here to help.” Janet said with a soft smile, kissing Cora’s cheek. Briefly she touched her belly. “Little one, just stay there for a little while.

“Thank you for everything. You are making this last stretch a little bit easier.

“Can we meet for lunch tomorrow?”

“My schedule is very full tomorrow. You will have to come to the university for that.” Janet said apologetic.

Cora stretched her back again but stopped when she felt a sharp pain on the side of her belly. “I think I will pass, my body is giving me signs to take a rest.” She said rubbing the painful spot.

“Do you want me to take you home?” Janet had a worried look on her face.

Cora smiled. “I will manage, thank you.” She started walking. The pain had taken her off guard, but she had the urge to walk. Maybe she could walk it off. Although her hips and lower back would be painful tonight, the walking helped her relax. It would be a 30-minute walk back home, with regular rest stops it would probably be more like an hour, she thought, but she had time. She moved her hand to her belly again. “Please stay there for a couple of weeks, alright? I am not ready yet.”

She stopped walking when she felt that sharp pain again. She put her hands on her back and stretched. Her head leaned back and she closed her eyes. Her doctor had warned her about these pains, she had them before. It was just ligament pain. Maybe she should better get on the bus to go home instead of walking, she thought.

Robert left the office, to get some air. Since he was back in London he was restless. Why wasn’t he trying to find Cora? What was keeping him? He didn’t know. This whole business made him insecure. What if that Elinor Dashwood was indeed Cora, why would she not use her real name? But why was she asking for him? She never tried to contact him anymore, and she was the one who got angry.

His phone made a sound and he dug it up from his pocket. It was a message from John. He kept walking while reading the message and all of the sudden he bumped into someone.

“I am so sorry.” He started. “I wasn’t……” His voice got stuck in his throat when he looked up. The woman stared back at him, with her ice-blue eyes. He saw shock in them and disbelief.

“C. C. Cora?” He stuttered. He was too stunned to speak. Was this really, Cora? Then he looked down at her belly. You could not say, she got caught watching the paint dry, he thought. “I think I have to congratulate you?” Quickly he glanced at her hands, which she moved protectively over her belly. She wasn’t wearing a ring, so she wasn’t married. Or, he thought, her fingers were too swollen to wear her ring. He noticed her hands weren’t that slender any more.

“Your back,” Cora said breathless. The moment her eyes locked with Robert’s, she felt something stir inside her, but at the same time, she felt anger. How long was he back here in London?

“I am indeed, and you are pregnant.” Robert didn’t know why he said that last part. It was obvious she was and he already made a comment about it. He saw Cora had both her hands on her belly, it looked like she was protecting it.

“That wasn’t a hard guess,” Cora said short.

“It is good seeing you again.” Robert stepped closer to kiss Cora’s cheek. “Was it a happy accident?”

The moment he said that he felt Cora’s hands on his upper arms, pushing him backwards. “What are you implying?” Cora’s eyes shot fire. “Are you saying I slept with another man, while we were dating?”

Robert’s head started spinning. What was she saying? Quickly he did the math in his head, they started dating, about 10 months ago. He lost all colour in his face.

“Do you, really think this low of me? That I would sleep around with multiple guys at the same time. Don’t you remember, that you were my first?” Cora’s voice was deep and low from anger

“Well, you are pregnant, and I have been away.” Robert tried.

“Robert!” Cora exclaimed. “And how do you think that happened.”

Now Robert also started to get angry. “Are you implying that it is mine?”

“I am not implying anything! I am telling you.” Cora was steaming from anger.

“So, why did you never contact me?” Robert couldn’t believe what Cora was saying. If this baby was his, she had a lot explaining to do.

“That’s rich, coming from the one who blocked my number.” Cora bitched back. Deep under in her belly, she felt pain, that she tried to ignore. She should sit down, she thought, but she wasn’t going to show Robert any weakness.

Robert saw a shadow on Cora’s face, and her hand moved to the bottom of her belly. “I didn’t block your number.” Once he said that it dawned on him. “I dropped my phone in a river, the first day I arrived in Brussels.”

Cora was silent for a moment. Was he lying? She tried to see in his eyes if he was telling the truth. But another sharp pain made her eyes water. “Oooh” she let out a high-pitched sound.

“Cora?” Robert stepped closer again and wanted to take her arm, but Cora shook him off. What had he done? Why didn’t he ask Rosamund to go look for her? He could have easily found her. He knew where she was working, it was a small school, but he knew. He saw Cora hunch over, taking deep breaths. “Cora, what’s wrong?”

Cora couldn’t think. She was overtaken by pain and fear at the same time. What was happening, this was worse than the ligament pain she had before. This was lower and much stronger.

“Are you Elinor Dashwood?” Robert gasped when it dawned on him. “Why did you use a fake name? Cora, please sit down.” He took her arm and guided her towards a bench nearby.

“I don’t know why I did that,” Cora said when the pain slipped aside. “When I couldn’t reach you, I thought you blocked my number. Why did you never try to contact me?” She looked up to him. Robert was still standing next to her, with a worried look on his face.

“Before I left for Brussels, I saw you with a different man and I thought……” He stopped. “Well, I thought you had moved on and now seeing you pregnant confirmed my feelings.” He saw Cora’s eyes piercing into his. “I believe I was totally in the wrong.”

Cora felt another sharp pain and grabbed her belly with both hands. “Something is wrong.” She said very softly. “I have another month left.”

When life interrupts, chapter 11

“Robert! You aren’t listening to me.” Rosamund sighed.

Robert looked at his phone, he had put it on speakerphone. What was Rosamund trying to do.

“Cora was at our office two weeks. I am positive about that.” Rosamund tried again.

“Mama told me, there was a woman called Elinor Dashwood asking for me. And now you are telling me, that it was Cora? Don’t be ridiculous.” Robert sounded annoyed.

“Does the name Elinor ring a bell?” Rosamund asked with a hint of joy in her voice.

“As a matter of fact it does. So she can’t be Cora.”

Now Rosamund started laughing.

“What is so funny here?” Robert asked.

“Ever heard of Jane Austen?”

“Yes, I am not a total airhead. Can we please stop this conversation? I have a lot to do. Cora wasn’t there and if she was, she is playing a game, I don’t want to play.”

“Oh, Robert.” Rosamund sighed. She knew it wouldn’t help to press him further. He had made up his mind. Cora was out of the picture in his book.

+++

“John?” Robert stepped inside John’s office. He needed a distraction after the phone call with Rosamund. Why had Cora visited the London office? What did she want from him? She had moved on, or was he mistaken, and had Rosamund been right all this time?

“Stop walking into my office, asking my attention and then not sat a thing.” John complained.

“Oh, I am sorry.” Robert realised it was indeed something he did a lot. “Do you have plans for tonight?”

“I do, but do you need me for something?” John was still looking at Robert.

“I was looking for a buddy to go out, but I will go on my own.” Robert pouted.

John looked at his friend. “I will ask Anna if she minds when you are joining.”

Robert’s eyes lit up. “Will you?” At the same time, he felt guilty bugging in on their date.

“I will call her.”

+++

“Thank you for letting me join.” Robert kissed Anna on her cheek.

“The more the merrier.” Anna replied. “I also brought a friend, Caitlin.” She pulled the woman next to her closer. “Robert, Caitlin. Caitlin, Robert.” Anna introduced them.

Caitlin was the opposite of Cora, Robert thought. A voluptuous woman, with wide hips and prominent breasts. Her hair was blond and straight, and her eyes were dark brown.

“Hello, Caitlin, nice to meet you.” Robert didn’t care that she didn’t look like Cora at all. It would make it easier to forget about her. He proceeded to kiss both her cheeks and he felt her hand resting on his hip.

He wasn’t the type for physical attention right away, but he wasn’t in London and could start all over and try something new.

+++

A couple of hours and drinks later, Robert opened the door to his apartment for Caitlin. As soon as she was inside, he pressed her against the wall and started kissing her. They had shared several kisses already, but now they had privacy. He let all his breaks lose, his hands were resting on her bottom, while his tongue discovered her mouth. With one hand he moved to her front and slipped into her panties. He felt how wet she was and it encouraged him to move further down.

Caitlin’s hands moved over Robert’s body, while she directed him towards the sofa. Robert let her guide him. He was too intoxicated to protest at all, and he was liking the fact she took the lead.

He felt her fingers opening the buttons of his shirt and got chills when her fingers reached his skin. The sensation of her long fake nails, was strange, but enjoyable. Something new, he kept repeating in his head.

+++

Robert lay with his head on Caitlin’s stomach. His hand playing with one of her breasts. Cora was more toned he thought. Her breasts were smaller, and her overall figure was slender. He must admit he loved that. Although Caitlin was a beautiful woman, she wasn’t like Cora. He felt Caitlin’s hand in his hair.

“Stop worrying and kiss me. Whatever is the matter, it is not hete now.”

Robert shook off the thoughts about Cora and moved his lips over Caitlin’s body up to her mouth. He made sure he kissed every part of her on the way.

“That’s more like it.” He heard Caitlin moan.

+++

Robert woke up with a pounding head, he needed a minute to figure out where he was. He was lying in his bed, but it felt different. Then he heard breathing next to him. Slowly, because moving hurt his head, he looked to his left. There was a redhead next to him. It confused him even more, what had he done? He didn’t remember much from last night.

He had gone out with John and Anna. And then it dawned on him. Anna had introduced him to Caitlin. The woman sleeping next to him. He must have been pretty drunk to bring her to his home on the first evening.

He felt Caitlin’s hand move over his chest. “Good morning.” She said. “That was a wonderful night.”

“It was something different.” Robert said quietly.

Caitlin sat straight up. “What do you mean by that? I thought you liked it.”

Robert pulled himself up. “Oh, I did. You can make miracles with your mouth, but…..”

“You consider me as a one night stand and regret not sending me home last night.” Caitlin got out of bed and started to dress herself.

Robert opened his mouth, but got cut off by Caitlin.

“Anna spook with so much adoration about you. But you showed me differently. Let’s not waist any more of each others time. Goodbye.”

Caitlin stormed out of the room and Robert heard the front door close with a bang.

“That stupid Cora, he thought. She even managed to ruin his life here in Brussels. Why was he still obsessed with her? She had moved on. Or did she? Rosamund was convinced she had asked for him in the London office. Oh, why was it all so complicated? What was he going to do? Cora kept popping up in his head. He had loved their time together and he was convinced that they had a future together.

He made a decision, there were only 5 months left for him here in Brussels. He would go looking for her as soon as he was back. For now he was going to focus on making the business a big success.

When life interrupts, chapter 10

“Cora?” Richards’s voice woke Cora up. She moved her hand to her neck, which hurt uncomfortably. She must have fallen asleep on the armchair. She looked up at Richard and produced a faint smile.

“Richard? You are still here?”

Rose had asked if she could call a friend for her and the only one she could think of was Richard. He had come directly.

“Of course I am, you are in desperate need of a friend. So here I am.” He softly touched her arm.

Cora felt the hairs on her neck rising. She didn’t like the look on his face. Had she made the right decision to ask him over?

Richard bent over and kissed Cora on her cheek. “I will make you a cup of tea, you still look a bit pale.” He proceeded to brush his finger over Cora’s cheek and leaned in again, but this time he kissed her lips.

Cora froze at the sensation of his lips and she tried to pull back. Pushing Richard away with both her hands.

“Don’t resist. I know you want this too.” Richard said grabbing both Cora’s wrist and pushing her back in her chair. He was now leaning with his whole body on top of Cora’s.

She tried to scream, but his mouth covered hers again. She managed to pull up her knees and hit him in the groin.

Richard let out a deep earthy growl and jumped back, clutching has hands between his legs. “What did you do that for!” He said at the same time angry and surprised. He approached her again.

“I can ask you the same thing.” Cora said, standing up, and walking around the arm chair, so there was a barrier between her and Richard.

“I will leave and will never come back.” Richard said with a low voice. “You will have nobody here, you understand that? I am the only friend you have here, you want to lose me too?

“I rather have no friends, than a friend like you!” Cora tried to control her voice, but she noticed it was shaking from fear.

Richard let out a mean laugh. “You don’t know what you wish for, this city can be a lonely one and dangerous if there is nobody to protect you.”

Cora felt chills running over her back, there was just one person she needed protection from and that was Richard. How could she have misjudged him so badly. She really thought he was a dear friend, but boy had he shown his real face to her. She strained her back. “I will manage perfectly well, without you ‘protecting’ me.” Those last words she said, her voice full of sarcasme. “I will ask you now to leave my house.”

Richard left and Cora closed the door behind him. She leaned against it, her whole body started shaking, but she talked to herself to keep composed. Her hand moved to her abdomen. “I guess it is truly just you and me now.”

+++

Cora looked up at the building. So this was where Robert had his head office. Last night she decided to take action and make contact with him. She thought it was best to go in person, rather than calling the office. And now here she was, her palms started sweating, she brushed them against her legs and opened the door. She was greeted by a woman her age at the front desk.

“How can I help you?”

“I came to see Robert Crawley.” Cora knew he wasn’t in, but she needed an excuse to hear more about him leaving the country.

“Oh, I am sorry miss. Mr Crawley will not be in the office for the next 6 months. Can I send him a message?”

Cora didn’t know what to answer. What message was she going to give him? She couldn’t tell the girl she was pregnant. Her mind didn’t come up with a clever answer and she stood there just staring at the girl.

“Miss? What can I tell him? Why are you here?”

“Who is this?” A sharp voice sounded, left from Cora. It shook her up from her thoughts.

“Mrs. Crawley, this lady is looking for Mr. Crawley, I just told her he isn’t in the office.”

“And nor will he be for the next month.” The woman, clearly Violet Crawley, was around the same age as her own mother, Cora thought. She was quite tall and had a sharp face. Her eyes were a bit rounder than normal. Her voice was as sharp as the look on her face. “What do you want from him?”

Cora got flustered by the way this woman talked to her. “I would like to talk to him.” She decided that both of these women didn’t need to know more.

“Mama, good to have you back home again.” Another woman entered the entrance hall and Cora regonized her as Rosamund.

It felt strange knowing the names of these women without ever meeting with them before.

“Oh hello, how can we help you?” Rosamund turned towards Cora.

“She wants something from Robert. But she will have to wait for him to come back. He is too busy to be bothered at the moment.

Cora got an apologetic look from Rosamund. She stretched out her hand. “I am Lady Rosamund, I will let my brother know there was somebody for him. Who can I tell was here?”

“Elinor” Cora answered.

“And do you young lady.” Violet looked her up and down. “Have a last name?”

Without thinking Cora said. Dashwood. Elinor Dashwood.”

Rosamund gave her a weird look and Cora knew she screwed up. Why didn’t she say a random name? No of course she used one from a Jane Austen novel.

“I will let Robert know you wanted to see him. He will be in contact.” Rosamund said. “Good day.”

Cora left the building feeling utterly stupid. She walked straight to the bus to go to the university. She was ripping off bandages now, so she could better rip them all. She would also pay a visit to the National Gallery.

Luckily both conversations went a lot smoother. She would stay working as long as possible and then will have normal maternity leave. Both the university and the National Gallery offered a babysitter during her working hours. It was such a relief for Cora to know that this would all work out. She wasn’t so sure about Robert. She should had given them her real name, now she left him in the dark about who she was.

+++

“That was peculiar,” Violet said while walking into her office with Rosamund. “The name sounded familiar.”

Rosamund smiled internally, of course, it did. It was one of the main characters of Sense and Sensibility. Rosamund had a feeling she just met Cora Levinson.

When life interrupts. Chapter 5

“Cora?” Robert asked while buttering his toast. It was a Sunday morning and had spent the night at Cora’s. During the week both were busy, but this was the second weekend they were together. Friday evening they went to a gig from a local band, yesterday they had walked around in the National Gallery. He noticed Cora was passionate about art. She knew so much about all the different artists.

Cora turned around, her curls swirled around her face, she was standing at the kitchen counter. Robert was transported back to last night when her curls were tickling his thighs. It had been obvious that he was Cora’s first, but he loved showing her what was possible and she was a fast learner. Last night she had surprised him with her mouth in a way he had never been pleased.

“Stop thinking about last night and ask your question.” Cora said stepping closer and kissing his cheek.

Robert wrapped his arm around her waist and rested his hand on her bottom. “I forgot what my question was.” He felt Cora’s hand moving over his back. She bent down to kiss his lips.

“I am sure you did not.”

With his hand still on her bottom he smirked. “You know me too well. “Why do you teach at that local school?”

Cora’s hand movement stopped. “Because I like teaching?” She raised her eyebrows. “What an odd question.”

“I don’t mean, why do you teach, I mean why aren’t you teaching on a higher level?” Robert moved his hand, so it was resting on her waist.

Cora frowned. She didn’t tell Robert about her dream. Teaching at the Royal College of Art. How did he know her doubts? “I, I.” She started but did not know what to answer exactly. “I never got the chance to teach somewhere else. I got this job and think I am happy with it.”

Now Robert took Cora’s hands in his. “Don’t fool yourself. I don’t believe you are happy with it. When you talk about your classes, I miss a spark in your eyes.”

“Oh” Cora said softly.

“Yes. Yesterday in the gallery I saw a spark when you were talking about the paintings and their history. Don’t you want to feel that when you are teaching?”

Cora lowered her eyes and tried to pull back her hands, but Robert strengthened his grip. “I don’t know the right people.”

With his thumb, he was brushing her hand with the other one he lifted her chin. “With your knowledge you don’t need to. Why don’t you write to them?”

“They won’t take it seriously. I am just a public school teacher.”

“Where did you study yourself?” Robert asked.

“I got my Master in art history at Columbia University back in New York.”

“And you are teaching at a public school? Darling, how did you end up there?”

Cora shrugged. “I needed a job. The only thing I found was at the school I teach now.”

Robert stared at Cora, she thought she wasn’t skilled enough. Totally forgetting the fact she has a master, something you need to be skilled for. “Cora, I think you should write that letter.

“Do you really?” Cora wasn’t sure if he was saying this to please her or that he really thought it.

“You have a master’s in art history, why would the Royal college of art don’t want you?”

Cora sighed, she knew Robert wouldn’t understand. “It is a master from America.”

“So?” Robert was getting more confused by the minute.

“You really don’t understand do you?” Cora got irritated. How did Robert not see the problem? She was lucky she had a job as a teacher at all. “Robert, you are forgetting I am an American with an American education. British people tend to look down on that. I wish I had taken the time to get my PhD at the University College London. But I didn’t.”

“You could still go for that PhD?” Robert tried. He saw that Cora’s blue eyes had turned into ice-cold fireballs.

“And who is going to pay for that? And how do you think I can afford this house? No Robert, maybe you are coming from a rich family where everything is possible and presented on a gold plate. I have to work for it. Something you should try” Cora did not know why she was getting this angry, she didn’t even know if Robert was rich. Maybe his parents didn’t pay for everything for him and he had said he worked in his father’s business. She sighed again, took Robert’s empty plate and threw it in the sink.

“If you really think that, then I think I better go.” Robert got up, kissed her cheek and left.

Cora sank to the ground with her head in her hands, she didn’t know why she got so mad and why she said that. Until now he hadn’t treated her differently since he knew she was from America and didn’t her parents pay for everything she needed. Her mother bought her this house. But once she got her teaching job, her mother cut her allowance in half. It was Martha’s way of saying she disagreed.

Cora got up and walked to her study, opened her laptop and checked the website for vacancies. There was one, for a minute she didn’t do anything, but then she clicked on the apply button.

+++

Angry Robert walked into his own apartment. Why had Cora said all this? His parents always gave him what he needed, but nothing came for free. His father taught him very young to work for his money. How dared Cora insinuate that he didn’t work? They were opening a new office on the mainland and his mother wanted him to go there to make sure the start-up would go smoothly. He had been very enthusiastic to go until he met Cora. She had shaken up his world and it was hard to leave her behind in London. He should not have left her house like this. Although he was only trying to help, he understood where she was coming from. It must have been indeed hard to find a job as an American. He knew his mother always looked down on Americans, they were loud and annoying according to Violet. But Robert knew better because he had met Cora.

When life interrupts, chapter 4

Cora went into the kitchen, Robert stayed behind in the living room. He walked up to the bookcase. There were a decent number of books, and Robert loved the variety. He saw Karin Slaughter, John Grisham, Stephen King, Santa Montefiore, Virginia Woolf, J.R.R Tolkien, Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, and so many more. He was intrigued by her variety of writers. He picked up a book called Little Woman from Louisa May Alcott, and it was clearly read.

“That is one of my favourites.” Cora’s voice sounded behind Robert.

Guilty Robert put the book back on the shelf. “I am sorry for being nosy.”

Cora stepped closer. “I do not mind.” She took the book in her hands and stroke with her hand over the cover.

Robert saw her eyes soften, and he could see the memories going through her head. “Did you read this one often?”

Cora went back in time in her memory.

‘Time for bed, young lady.’

Cora got tucked in by her dad. He always read to her, before going to sleep, from Little Woman.

“Let Marmee think we are getting things for ourselves, and then surprise her. We must go shopping tomorrow afternoon, Meg. There is so much to do about the play for Christmas night,” said Jo, marching up and down, with her hands behind her back and her nose in the air. Isidor closed the book. “And now it is time to sleep.” He bent down and kissed Cora on her forehead.

Robert watched how Cora drifted away, she was staring at the book. When he saw tears forming in her eyes, he softly touched her arm. “Can I help you in the kitchen?” He tried.

Cora looked up, and she gave Robert a faint smile. She loved the memories of her dad, but at the same time, they made her sad. He had left them too early. “I thought we could have an easy dinner. I put a pizza in the oven, I don’t think either of us will eat much after that exquisite lunch.”

“You are right. We could hop in the supermarket for some dessert?”

“I have some cake left, I baked yesterday and some fresh cream we can whip?” Cora put the book back on the shelf.

“Perfect.” Robert followed Cora to the kitchen. He felt perfectly at home, being here together with Cora. He should tell her about the plans Violet has for him. But not tonight. Tonight was a night to enjoy each others company.

They ended up eating only half of the pizza but still decided to make the dessert.

Cora turned the mixer on to whip up the cream. Suddenly, she felt Robert’s hands on her hips. It made her jump, and the mixer came out of the bowl, and Cora got covered in cream.

Robert started belly laughing and tried to say sorry, but his words got stuck in his laughter.

Cora wiped the cream of her face when Robert took her hand to stop her. He brought her hand to his mouth and kissed the cream off. He then proceeded to kiss her face clean. Cora felt a bit embarrassed at first, but as soon as she felt Robert’s lips on her skin, she relaxed. What a wonderful feeling this was.

Robert turned Cora towards him and pushed his hands in her lower back to pull her closer. He kissed her on the lips, Cora wrapped her arms around him. Her hands rested on his bottom. He felt her fingers squeezing him. She pushed her body even closer to his. Robert’s mind started spinning. He was here at Cora’s place, kissing her again. From the living room, he could hear the tunes of ‘Wasn’t expecting that – Jamie Lawson’ he started moving on the beat and Cora moved with him.

Cora moved her hand to Robert’s shoulder when he started dancing. She leaned her head against his other shoulder and soaked up his warmth and smell. She recognized the scent as being Blue the Chanel. She could smell some lemon, nutmeg, and peppermint.

When the song ended, Robert took Cora’s face in his hands. “Thank you for this dance, Milady.”

Cora smiled up at him. “The pleasure was all mine.”

“Oh, was it?” Robert teased Cora.

Cora got on het tiptoes and kissed him on the lips. “Yes, it was.” Softly she bit his lower lip.

Robert wrapped his arms around her and lifted her up. Cora’s legs wrapped around him, and he walked her towards the wall. He moved his kisses to her neck and got aroused when she laid her head in her neck to give him better access to her skin. He needed both hands to hold her up, but his mouth lowered to her chest.

“We should go upstairs.” Cora moaned.

Robert stopped his kisses. “Are you sure?” He didn’t even know why he asked because it was all he could think of since they entered her home. But he wanted to be the decent man and not suggest it. Now Cora had done it, she paved the way.

“Yes, silly, of course I am sure.” Cora said with a slightly annoyed undertone. She knew Robert wanted more, but he was too much of a gentleman to go for it so soon. Even though they barely knew each other. What could you know about the other person on the third date. But from the moment she kissed him this afternoon, she knew she wanted him.

+++

Cora’s fingers played with Robert’s chest hair, her head resting on his upper arm. Her leg was between his, her calve was itching, but she did not want to move. She felt his fingers stroke the skin on her shoulder. He had shown her what heaven was just now. She was all rosy and content.

Robert pressed his nose in Cora’s curls. He had never felt so complete with a woman. Everything that happened fitted perfectly. He had been a bit insecure about what she would like, but soon they moved in the same rithem, and he would have loved it if it had never stopped. The way her chest moved up and down, how she had felt around him, magical. He felt a little bit guilty. He should tell her about his plans. “Cora?” He started, but as an answer, there was a very soft “Hmmm. ” he felt her breathing slowing down. She clearly was falling asleep. “Never mind, sleep tight.” He pulled up the duvet and tried to sleep himself. Cora’s hand on his chest, he slow puffs of air that she was blowing against his chest made it hard to fall asleep. He did not want to miss any of this feeling. Tomorrow he needed to talk with his mother, maybe they could change the plans.
