Blue dress

Robert glanced at the door, where was Cora it took her a little bit longer than usual to come down. What was she doing? He tried to listen to the conversation that was going on.

Carson walked towards him. “All the guests are in the drawing room, is her Ladyship coming?” He asked.

“Thank you, Carson, as soon as her Ladyship joins us, you can announce dinner,” Robert answered. He looked at the door again, but there was no sign of Cora yet.

“Papa? Where is Mama?” Mary had walked towards him. “Something wrong?”

“Nothing is wrong, dear.” Robert answered. “Your mother will be down soon.” He waited for Mary to start a conversation with the chap that was standing next to him. The door opened, that must be Cora he thought. And as always he felt his heart flutter, even after all these years of marriage he still got excited seeing her. She appeared in the doorway in a stunning blue dress, her blue eyes lit up, when she saw him standing in the back of the room. Robert was mesmerized by her appearance and needed a minute to soak in her beauty. She had worn this dress only one time before. They were in London, for Rose´s wedding. The dress was royal blue, covered in a kind of lacey fabric. Robert never knew the correct terms when he tried to describe Cora´s dresses. He remembered the back of her dress, it showed of her shoulder blades, without showing to much skin. He realised he was staring at her and quickly walked towards the door to greet her.

Cora was looking at Robert, she was relieved to see him walking towards her. Even after all these years she still got nervous walking into a room full of guests. She could not wait to go back upstairs with Robert. After a busy day entertaining, there was nothing better than to crawl into his arms and settle down for the night. Unfortunately they still had to entertain their guest for a couple more hours. Robert had reached her and softly put his hand on her hip and kissed her cheek.

“You look mesmerizing, my darling.” He said, while he kept his lips a little to long on her cheek.

Cora’s hand went to his upper arm, his strong arms, that were always there to protect her. She forced herself to let go of them and think of something else. They were in company and should behave.

“I am glad, you decided to wear this dress again.” Robert said softly, so only she could hear him.

Cora felt her cheeks colour. “You remember me wearing this one?”

Robert stepped back a little and said semi indignant. “How could I not.” He then stepped back towards her. “You always look stunning, but this dress.” He run his hand over her back. “This blue makes your eyes shine and the way the dress moves around your legs.” He stopped. “I do not know how to describe it, but you look stunning my darling.” His hand still running over her back.

Now Cora’s cheeks were bright red. “Stop it.” she said softly, without sounding to harsh. She glanced around the room, but everybody was engaged in their own conversation and nobody was looking at them.

Robert took her arm in his. “Milady, are you ready for dinner?”

Cora leaned in on him. “I am Milord.”

They both looked at Carson, who nodded in agreement.

Cora turned towards the guests. “Dinner, everybody.”

The drawing room started to empty, it was a big dinner with a lot of guests and it took a while for everybody to leave the room. Robert stayed still, with Cora’s arm still in his, his hand on hers. She nodded at the guests while they walked passed. Mary and Edith were the last ones to leave the room. Cora stopped Edith. “Darling, after dinner I will not stay to long can you make sure all the guests have what they need?”

Robert gave her a concerned look. “What is it?” he asked.

Cora padded his hand. “I am just a little worn down, nothing to worry about. A good nights rest will help.”

“When you are sure?” His eyebrows were drawn together, he was worried Cora was hiding something for him.

Cora got on her tiptoes and kissed his cheek. “I promise, there is nothing wrong. These days have just been busy with the hunting and everything. I am not your blushing bride that could go on for days on end.”

Robert checked the room and it was empty. He pecked Cora’s lips. “You are still my blushing bride.” He brushed his hand over Cora’s cheek, that coloured the moment he said that. Robert chuckled. “You see, you still blush. Come my dear, the sooner we sit down for dinner, the sooner you can retrieve in your bedroom.”

Cora’s heart swelled from the love she felt for this man, she was the luckiest woman alive.

But Papa! Why? Chapter 7

Cora sighed. “But why do we have to hire an expensive company, I just showed you that we can do the pictures ourselves. Miss Baxter is very skilled with a camera and I, myself have always done photography for ‘Levinson and sons’.

“Miss Baxter?” Violet said.

Cora was not sure why Violet was present at this meeting. As she understood from Rosamund, Violet did not have much interest in how the business was run, until now. But since Cora had joined, she was present at every meeting and whatever Cora tried to bring to the table, she brushed it aside.

“Miss Baxter was our receptionist until Miss Levinson here, decided she wanted her as her assistant,” Robert said unkindly, pointing at Cora.

“Robert.” Rosamund hissed.

“What! Robert said. “Is that not what happened?”

Cora felt her cheeks burning, why was Robert doing this? He had John as his assistant. Patrick had agreed that she could use an assistant and he thought Phyllis was a perfect candidate. When Cora found out that she was a photographer, it had all turned out to be even better than she could have hoped for. This way her idea was even easier to accomplish.

“Miss Baxter has indeed started here in this company as a receptionist.” Patrick started, with a stern look at Robert. “But as a lot of people do, she has taken on a new adventure. She is Cora’s assistant and when you ask me, they make a perfect duo.”

Cora felt the knot in her stomach open up. Patrick was supporting her and whatever Robert and Violet thought of her, Patrick was standing behind her and that gave her a good feeling. It was at the same time strange; her father had never done that. He loved her and she adored him, but he would never support her with anything in the business. It was always Harold this and Harold that. He did everything right, even if she had helped Harold to get the success he had. Her father Isidor would never see that. She was his little girl and would always be his little girl. She had hoped that he would stop her mother when this crazy idea of working together with ‘Crawley Advertisements’ had popped up. She still had not figured out what was behind this plan. She had not gotten any further instructions, besides making yourself indispensable.

Cora shook up when Rosamund touched her arm. “Cora?” She asked softly.

“I am sorry, what was the question?” Cora asked.

“What is your plan regarding the sky garden promotional work?” Patrick asked again, still with a soft tone.

“I was thinking, we could organise a dinner and invite some local people. Not the well-known, rich, and famous people. But just the local people who live in the area. We will decorate the area and shoot some pictures while they are dining. Then we can write an article about what Sky Garden has to offer and use those pictures.” Cora stopped. It was awfully quiet in the room, and she looked at Rosamund for support.

Patrick was the first to speak. “It is something we could work with.”

“Inviting local people?” Robert sneered. “And what is your reasoning behind that?”

Cora swallowed, she was already calculating on Robert being against is, but still, it caught her off guard. “It will attract more people, when they see that everybody can go there. When we will use only famous and rich people, we will make it look like, Sky Garden is only for the rich. And that is exactly the opposite of what the goal of Sky Garden is. They want to offer that luxurious feeling to everybody. They say: ‘You do not need to rent out the Ritz for an exclusive dinner party. We can do the same with an even better view.” So why would we use the rich and famous for their advertisement?”

Robert looked at Cora. He had seen a slight change in her. The way she straightened her back and her voice had gotten a different tone. She was more confident than she had been until now. It suited her, he thought. His eyes followed the neckline of her blouse, her blouse was neatly buttoned up, so her breast line was not visible, but he could imagine how it could look like with one more button open. This thought annoyed him, why did he even think about Cora’s breasts? She was his colleague and he had to admit, she was incredibly beautiful, but he was not attracted to her, not at all, he said to himself. He forced his eyes to look at her face again. He saw her eyes go around the table, while she was explaining why she wanted to invite local people. Her mouth had a perfect shape, he thought, and her blue eyes were sparkling while she spoke. He could see her passion in them, and it made her even more attractive. He quickly looked away; he did not know why these thoughts came up. He was not interested in her, she was a forced addition to the company that was all. Robert heard his father agreeing with the things Cora had said.

“So, we will follow Miss. P…. Levinson.” He had to correct himself, he had almost said, Miss Pretty. “Does that mean, I can focus on other things?” Robert said with an annoyed tone.

“This means, that you and Cora will work together.” His father said. Robert was surprised by his tone. “For now, I think we have discussed what was needed. Cora, can you write your plan, and have it on my desk by Friday?”

“Of course, I will start as soon as I am back at my desk. Thank you.” Cora got up and walked out.

Robert saw his mother and Rosamund also leave. His father stayed behind.

“Do you have a minute?” Patrick said.

“John is waiting for me, but what is it, Papa?”

“When you think I do not see what you are trying to do to miss Levinson, you are wrong. You will accept her working in this office. It is still my company, and you work for me.” Patrick gave Robert a warning look and walked out.

Robert sighed, what had he done wrong to deserve this treatment. It was unbelievable that losing that one client resulted in this. Soon and Cora would be his father’s successor. Robert was determined not to let that happen. Whatever that Mr. Levinson was planning, he was not going to get his hands on this company. It was his and his only.

Loving your ladies maid

A different story this time. Not Cobert coded. Woman love woman content. (One chapter story)

What if you fall in love with your maid? Does she love you back? And what about your husband?

+++

Cora woke up from a soft humming. She felt her heart flutter when she recognised the voice. It was Baxter, who was humming. She opened her eyes and saw her putting down her clothes for the day.

“Ah, you are awake.” Baxter said when she noticed Cora was looking at her. “I have your breakfast ready.

Baxter walked towards Cora and put the tray down. Cora took it from her and their hands briefly touched. This send a shiver through Cora’s body. A feeling she only had when Robert touched her. What was happening to her. Why did Baxter’s voice make her happy and why did she feel the urge to touch her? “Thank you Baxter.” Cora managed to say. She forced her self to look down and not at her maid’s face.

Baxter gave her a soft smile and went back to Cora’s dressing table, where she laid down two sets of gloves.

“I will fill up the bath Milady.” Baxter said and started to walked away.

“That is alright Baxter, I will not take a bath this morning. His Lordship and I need to go into the village before noon.” Cora was glad she had no time to take a bath, with the feelings rushing through her body, she was not sure she could handle being naked in front of Baxter this morning.

“I understand, I will put down your things at the sink so you can freshen up there.”

Did Cora hear disappointment in Baxter’s voice? Or was she imagining things? These feelings were growing stronger each day. She was confused by them

Once Cora returned to her bedroom and sat down at her dressing table, she watched how Baxter brushed her hair. She had thick chestnut brown curls and she loved it when Baxter brushed her hair.

Was she extra gentle today? With every stroke, she felt Baxter’s hand on her head. And she enjoyed the feeling. She had always loved the way Baxter did her hair. She was soft and gentle in her movements and every knot she brushed out carefully.

Baxter’s eyes met Cora’s in the mirror and there was a warm smile around her lips. How she would love to feel and taste them. A thought that pleased and scared her at the same time.

Baxter put down the brush and rested her hands on Cora’s shoulders. A familiar heat shot through her core and she felt her cheeks burn. She had to fight the urge to cover Baxter’s hands with hers. Cora closed her eyes, hoping she would cool down. But the sensation of Baxter’s soft small hands on her was enough to make her weak.

“I hope you want this.” Baxter’s voice was very close to Cora’s ears and she felt one of her hands sliding down to her breast. Cora was wearing a thin nightrobe, the warmth of Baxter’s hand on her was comforting. Without opening her eyes she nodded in agreement.

Baxter’s lips were soft and warm on her cheek. Cora’s hand rose to her cheek, to feel where she just felt that sensation. She then reached for Baxter’s cheek and softly stroked the soft skin. Their eyes were locked again.

Cora turned around on her chair, pulled Baxter closer, and pressed her lips on hers. They were even softer than she had expected. Her taste was fresh and sweet at the same time. Slowly she got up, without breaking the connection. Her tongue found Baxter’s and they slowly moved around each other. This kiss was full of warmth, no wild desire. Only soft, warm love.

Her hands moved over Baxter’s back, it was exactly how she imagined. Small, but she could feel the strong muscles in her back. Her fingers followed the curves of her hips, her soft tummy, up to her chest. She had never felt other breasts than her own. Baxter had small but round breasts and Cora could easily fit her hand around them. Gently she squeezed and she felt a shudder go through Baxter.

Cora slowly opened the buttons in the front of Baxter’s dress, her mouth followed where the skin was bare. She kissed every inch she could see. Baxter’s hands were resting on Cora’s hips, her fingers massaging her there.

A noise in Robert’s dressing room made Cora step back. Quickly Baxter buttoned her dress. Cora fixed her nightrobe. The room next door got quiet again and she heard the door close.

Both ladies let out a relieved sigh.

Baxter was looking at the floor. “I am sorry, Milady. I should not have done that.”

Cora stepped closer to Baxter again and cupped her face. She lifted her head so she could look into her eyes. “Do not say sorry, I wanted this as much as you did.”

“But I am your ladiesmaid.” Baxter said timidly.

“And I am married.” Cora sighed and kissed Baxter’s lips once more. “But I cannot deny the feelings I have when you are around. It is wrong.” She stopped and kissed Baxter again. “Very wrong.” Another kiss. “But.” Now Baxter was the one kissing Cora. A deep moan left Cora’s throat and she deepened the kiss. “I think I love you.” She finished her sentence.

“Do not say that,” Baxter said, stepping away from Cora. “You are in love with his Lordship and he loves you.”

Cora nodded. “I know, I truly love him. But I cannot explain what I feel for you.”

“Let us not use the word love.” Baxter said.

Cora took Baxter’s hands in hers and brushed with her thumb over the back of her hands. “But what do we do now? I do not want you to leave.”

“We can work this out. For now, let me get you ready for your appointment with his Lordship.”

Cora sat down on her chair again and let Baxter finish her hair. In her mind desperately searching for away to make this work.

But papa! Why? Chapter 6

“Did you talk with Mr. Crawley already?” Martha asked her husband when they sat down at the dinner table.

“I have sent him an email, but Cora only arrived two days ago, I do not want to interfere too much already.”

“You are still keeping up the façade, right?”

Isidor sighed, he still was not convinced they did the right thing. Of course, it would be nice to have a London-based office. That way it was easier to spread all over Europe. Although he was aware of the results of Brexit. But it was all set up for Martha’s masterplan. Getting Cora to marry an English Lord. “Yes dear. We will go ahead with opening an office in London and we will use ‘Crawley Advertisements’ knowledge.”

“I was wondering.” Martha continued. “Cora did not call them Lord or Lady Crawley.”

“Maybe they do not use those terms anymore.” Isidor said.

“I will have to look into that family again, what if I made a mistake and they are not the Grantham’s? If that is the case, I have to get Cora to connect with other people. Than this whole wanting to work together with ‘Crawley Advertisements’ is a waste of time.” Martha put another bite in her mouth.

Isidor looked at her. Why was his wife so obsessed with this Lord and Lady business. Why was an American man not good enough for their daughter. He did not like that Cora was this far away. And if she would find a suitable match, she would be for ever far away.

“Are you listening?” Martha snapped.

Isidor was so used to Martha snapping like that, that he did not even flinch. “No, dear, I was not listening. But I will look into the titles of the Crawley’s.”

“So, you were listening!” Martha said with an irritated voice.

With a deep sigh Isidor answered. “No, I was not, but you are asking me the same question since this morning. Can we please just enjoy our dinner now.” He turned towards Harold. “Did you see that new request that came in today. What do you think? Should we take that job?”

Martha gave Isidor an annoyed look. Why did he not care about Cora’s title. They were still seen as new money in this city. She did not like that. She needed Cora to make name and get a title, so she herself would rise up the social ladder.

*2 weeks had passed*

Cora was starting to find her routine, each morning she went for a short walk along the riverside. Before heading to the office, she loved how walkable this area was. She had not missed her car yet. It would probably come as soon as she had time to explore more of the country. But she could always rent a car.

When she entered the office building, the receptionist greeted her. It was a nice young woman called Baxter. Baxter was more than just the receptionist, she made sure that all the desks were stocked, with paper, pens, paperclips and so on. She made sure Robert got his lunch every afternoon, at exactly the same time. Cora had chuckled about that. It did not take her long to realise how much Robert was leaning on his routine. She preferred to go out for lunch, and she had found a new place each day, due to the recommendations of Baxter. She had also asked her everything she needed to know about the computer system, they were using. Cora had been surprised by how much Baxter knew.

She took the stairs to her office, when she walked in, she was surprised, to find John sitting at her desk. Although was it her desk? It was a bigger one, even the screen that was standing on it was bigger. “Good morning.” She said surprised.

“Good morning.” John answered friendly.

“Ah, you are already here.” Robert said. He was standing behind Cora.

This comment annoyed Cora already, what game was he playing now? “As every day.” She answered.

Robert hummed. “Well, as you see, I have moved your desk.”

“You moved my desk?” Cora echoed.

“Indeed, it is at the office next door. I need John, who is my assistant, in the same room. It makes work easier.”

Cora did not know how to respond properly. But she was not going to be humiliated by Robert. She straightened her back and looked Robert in the eye. “Thank you, for moving it.” She looked at John. “Congratulations on your new job.” She turned back around and walked passed Robert. “Good to know we can collaborate with assistants now.” She did not turn around again, when she heard Robert’s “What” She was not going to lose this power battle. Because that was what Robert was doing. Battling her to see who was the strongest and who would last the longest. Cora opened the door, to her new office and it was not even that bad. It was big enough for a second desk. She put down her bag and opened her laptop.

The first email she was going to send was towards Mr. Crawley senior. She needed his approval for her idea. Robert did not need to know what she was going to do.

After she hit send, she doubted. Was it smart to already send out this email, what if it did not work out the way she had hoped. What if she would say no to her request? Cora sighed, it did not matter, when she would not help her, Cora would find another assistant. She had plans, big plans and this was the time to make sure they would happen. Back at home, Harold had always stopped her from forming her own ideas, but with Robert it was different. He was so indifferent to what she was doing, that she had more space to develop things. She had already found a company that wanted to collaborate with her on a pilot idea.

Her next email was towards Rosamund. ‘Good morning, Rosamund.
I know, I am quite late with my request. I understand when you are busy, if so, please let me know and we can schedule it for another day. I saw that tonight at the local cinema they would show that new Liam Neeson movie and was thinking, that we could go together. Kind regards, Cora.”

Right away there was an answer. “Good morning, Cora.
That is a lovely idea, maybe we can grab something to eat before we see that film? See you at lunch time for the lunch meeting with ‘Sky Garden’. Warm regards, Rosamund.”

Cora opened her agenda, there was no meeting scheduled. Then she opened Robert’s agenda and there she saw the meeting. It was a good thing their accounts were linked she thought. Robert was trying to make her look like a fool for not showing up. She reminded herself that she should check his agenda more often.

Drabble – After the fire

She raised her hand to his cheek and brushed some dirt away. “You were incredibly brave tonight.” Cora said when they finally retrieved themselves in Cora’s room.

Robert sighed and took off his housecoat “I am glad everybody is alright, and nobody got hurt.”

“I just do not understand how it happened, Edith was asleep, how did that fire start?” Cora wet her thumb with her tongue and brushed over Robert’s nose. “Baxter is bringing up a bowl of water, so we can clean your face.” She said.

“We will probably never know how it happened. I saw you thanking Thomas. I will talk with him tomorrow, to give him proper compensation for raising the alarm.”

Cora was still focused on cleaning Robert’s face, she had her handkerchief between her fingers now.

Robert put his hand on Cora’s arm, to lower it. “Do not ruin that handkerchief, Baxter will bring the old cloth’s any minute now.”

The moment he said those words, the door opened and Baxter stepped inside, Robert let go of her arm. “Thank you Baxter. You can clean it up tomorrow and go up to bed now.” Cora said.

“Are you sure Milady? Do I need to bring anything else?”

“Can you ask John to bring me clean pyjamas?” Robert asked her.

Cora saw the confusion on Baxter’s face and remembered Mrs Hughes’s request. “Edith is in your dressing room, Bates cannot go in there.” She looked at Baxter. “Never mind Baxter, I will get them myself out of his Lordships dressing room. Good night.”

While Baxter left the room, Cora put the cloth’s in the lukewarm water. “Sit down here please.” She said to Robert. “You are too tall for me to clean your face properly while you are standing.”

Robert put his hands on Cora’s arm, to stop her movements. “I can do that myself.” He said it with a soft voice.

Cora saw the exhaustion in his eyes. “Darling, please sit down and let me do this.” She said as softly as he had spoken.

Without further hesitation, Robert sat down and let Cora clean his face, neck and hands. Her movements were slow and caring. The warm water on his skin was nice. And he noticed he finally started to calm down. The fear of losing his beloved house had put him under a lot of stress.

Tom had once more proved himself. He had made sure the children were outside and then he started to try and put out the fire. He was a brave man he thought.

Cora moved the cloth over Robert’s skin, the dirt was not easy to clean off, but she managed with the water and soap Baxter brought. Robert was taken away, she noticed, in his thoughts. No wonder, she thought. He had been in the room with all those flames. He and Tom had been incredibly brave tonight. And Thomas saved Edith’s life and quite frankly the whole house.

When she felt Robert letting out a deep sigh, she put the cloth back in the water and lowered herself next to him. She took his hands in hers. Under his nails, there was still some dirt she saw. Softly she brushed her thumbs over his hands. “It was a hard night, but Downton is still standing tall.”

Robert let out another deep sigh. “I do not know what we would have done otherwise.”

Cora squeezed his hands. “Let us not think about what could have happened. The damage stayed in Edith’s room. Downton is still standing.”

Robert nodded, but he could not speak due to a sudden lump in his throat.

Cora saw Robert’s bottom lip tremble. She got up a little and wrapped her arms around him. One hand moved up to his neck, and she massaged his neck. “All is well, darling. All is well.”

She pushed herself back. “Now, let me get you clean pyjama’s.” She started to get up, when Robert pulled her back down. This made her lose her balance and she ended sitting on his lap.

Robert immediately wrapped his arm around her waist and she felt his fingers digging into her skin. She cupped his cheek with her hand and kissed his lips briefly. “You had quite a shock tonight darling.” She said, and she felt Robert’s fingers dig even deeper, she knew he was getting aroused. Stress did sometimes have that effect on him. But with Edith in the dressing room, they could not do anything. What if she heard them? Just the thought of Edith overhearing them, made the upcoming heat inside her, due to Robert’s touch, calm down. She brushed his lips again with hers. “Darling, you need to get some sleep. Tomorrow will be a busy day, with all the paperwork that will follow after this fire.

Cora had hoped, that the thought of paperwork, would calm him down, but it did not have the effect she had wished for. On the contrary, he moved the hand that was resting on her leg towards her innerleg

Resolute, she put her hand on his and pushed it back to the top of her leg. “Edith is in the room next to us, and we had an exhausting night. We should get some sleep.”

Robert’s fingers relaxed. “You are right. I am extremely tired.” It was as if Cora’s words made him aware of how tired he was, and all of a sudden he could not keep his eyes open.

“Take of this dirty clothes, I will get you clean ones.” She kissed his lips again, before she got up.

+++

“Mama?” Edith said surprised when Cora opened the dividing door.

“I am sorry, my darling. I hope I did not wake you, but your father needs some clean clothes.” Cora stepped inside the room and closed the door behind her.

“I am sorry for sleeping here.”

“No, darling. No, no need to apologise.” Cora said quickly, walking towards Edith. She bent down and kissed Edith’s forehead. “Are you sure you are alright darling?”

Edith nodded. “Yes, mama. I only feel so stupid for setting the house on fire.”

Cora brushed over her cheek. “Do not worry about that darling. We do not know what started the fire.”

“But it was in my room.”

Cora pulled up Edith’s covers a bit more and said. “It does not matter, go try and get some sleep.”

“Can I sleep with you tonight?”

Cora was surprised by this question. The last time one of her girls slept in her room, was when they were little. “I cannot send Papa away, darling.” Cora felt awful, she would have loved to have Edith next to her. She needed her mother’s comfort and she could not give it to her. But Robert needed her too.

Before Edith could respond she said. “The bed is big enough, you can sleep on my side, I will sleep in the middle.” Cora saw Edith getting up. “Just wait a little bit, I will tell your father first and will give him time to change his clothes.

+++

Cora walked back into her room and for a second she could not find Robert. But then she saw his figure already lying under the covers. A very soft snoring came from the bed. She chuckled, put down his pyjama on his chair and walked towards him. She shifted the covers a bit and saw he went to bed without his pyjamas on. This complicated the situation a little bit. Could she bring Edith to sleep in their bed, while her father was only wearing his underpants? It was already unheard of that a father would sleep in the same room as his daughter.

It did not matter, Cora decided. Edith needed her, and her husband needed her. Cora walked back to the dressing room.

“Papa is already asleep, give me your pillow and covers and you can sleep next to me.”

Edith did as instructed, Cora walked back, made Edith’s side of the bed ready and got in herself. She shifted closer to Robert, so there was enough space for Edith. Robert immediately put his hand on her hip and pressed his nose in her hair.

“Mama, are you sure?” Edith said softly when she saw her mother lying in the middle of the bed.

Cora pulled back the covers. “Come on, we all need our sleep.” She waited for Edith to settle before she closed her own eyes and drifted off to sleep.

+++

Robert woke up, he was surprised to find Cora this close to him. He wanted to wrap his arm around her and kiss her awake, but when he heard a different sound than normal, he stopped. It was as if two people were sleeping next to him. He pushed himself up and saw Cora had her arm around another person. According to the hair colour, it was Edith.

Immediately he was aware that he was not wearing anything else than his underpants. As quietly as possible he got up. He did not kiss Cora, it would probably wake her up. He tugged his side of the covers in, as if he had not slept there.

The moment he closed the dividing door behind him, he let go of the breath, that he was holding. He felt slightly embarrassed, he had slept in the same bed as his grown-up daughter. That was unheard of. Cora was the only person who would make a decision like that. It showed that she still had some American left in her. And to be perfectly honest, he did not mind. She had made the right decision, to be there for him and also for Edith. He could not love her more, than he did in this moment.

Robert rang for Bates so he could start his day.

+++

Cora woke up from the light that came into the room. Baxter had entered and opened the curtains.

“Good morning, Milady.” She said.

Cora pushed herself up and felt instant relief when she saw Robert’s side empty and the covers tugged in, but when she saw his pillow she knew Baxter would know he had slept here. Did it matter? The staff knew they slept in the same room for many years now, and if they judged her for letting Edith sleep with them, she did not care about that.

“Good morning, Baxter. Thank you for waking me. I overslept.”

“That is alright, Milady. His lordship had asked to wake you and Lady Edith. He has left for a meeting already, but he will be back for tea. I have breakfast for you and Lady Edith ready.”

Cora smiled, she could not have wished for a nicer maid. Baxter never judged her, and when she did, she would never let Cora know.

But papa! Why? Chapter 5

Cora stared out the window over the river. Her mother was still talking. So many questions. How the people in the new office were, how Patrick was and Robert. If she had liked the coffee or was, she already drinking tea.

Her mother spoke over Crawley Advertisements as if it were theirs, was that what was behind all this? Was it just a coverup that they wanted to open offices here? Because how were they going to get clients when Crawley Advertisements was already renowned here in London.

“Yes, Mama. I will Mama. “Of course, Mama.” Cora answered all the questions that she asked. But she was feeling unease. Should she ask her father why she was truly here in London? What was the real reason?

“I have met Mr. Crawley and his son. There is also a daughter. Rosamund Crawley, she is a nice woman.” Cora answered the next question.

“Lady? What do you mean Mama? She introduced herself as Rosamund. Nobody has used Lord or Lady; they are not that old-fashioned here Mama.”

Cora sighed; her mother had such a weird view of how England was. As if they never stepped out of 1920.

“It is 2023 you know that right?” She snapped. “Well, never mind. I have to get some groceries. Give Papa my love.”

Cora put the phone back in her pocket and looked outside. The view of the river was astonishing, and she had to remind herself that the next time she spoke with her father, she needed to thank him.

+++

“John, did you give my proposal another thought? Robert brought his glass to his mouth. He was sitting in a pub at the riverside. John was his friend since primary school. He had lost sight of him, but last year they he bumped into him at a concert. He had noticed that John had a good set of brains and that he would love having him in the company and especially now with the arrival of Mrs. Levinson, he was desperate to have an ally next to him. He also knew that John needed work, since he was laid off.

“I did look at it indeed. But are you sure, your father needs more staff members?” John asked.

“You will be working for me, not my father.” Robert answered a little bit annoyed. Why did people always think everything had to be done by his father. He was as much partner in this business as his father was.

“I did not want to upset you.” John started, what annoyed Robert even more. “But the last time I checked the company is still under your father’s name.”

Robert sighed; he could have known John would look into the company. “He is still the head of the company, you are correct. But I am his successor and full partner already.” He took another sip of his beer. “So, what do you say, you want to come and help me out?”

“I could use the money.” John said. “Let us see what this will bring, and I cannot wait to meet your American colleague. Is he typical American as we thought?”

Robert froze when he saw a woman enter the pub, this could not be, he thought and he tried to hide behind John, who gave him a weird look. John turned around to see why Robert was behaving this weird.
“Since when do you hide from beautiful woman?” He inquired.

Robert still tried to make himself small. “Well, you asked me just now about the American colleague. That is her.”

“Her?” John said surprised, turning towards the woman again.

“Stop looking at her.” Robert hissed. “She will notice us.”

“I would not mind, when a woman that looks like her would notice me. My, oh my, they send the Diamant of their company.”

“Stop it.” Robert said. “They send the only person without a brain to help us out. They must think we are stupid.”

John chuckled. “You met with her today, did you?”

“I did. Why do you ask?”

“You are very confident about her capabilities.” John said, carefully.
Robert huffed. “She is American and a woman. Who is clearly more worried about her looks, than anything else.” He looked at Cora, who was standing at the bar. She had changed her clothes, into a nice fitting pants and blouse. Her hair was in a simple up-do. He would not mind it when she decided to wear that blouse to work, he thought. But at the same moment, he got annoyed by that thought. What was it that this woman did to him? She was good looking, yes, he could not deny that, but he always thought he needed more than simply good looks. All of the sudden Cora turned her head around and looked him in the eye.

+++

Cora had put her groceries away; she had been sitting on the sofa and staring outside. It was too early to go to bed, and the weather outside still looked nice. She decided to go for a little stroll along the riverside. When she passed the pub, she had met Rosamund, she went inside.

As happened back at home, when she entered somewhere she saw heads turning. Quickly she checked her clothes, nothing was wrong. Buttons were clothes and her zipper was up. She let out a sigh, she could do this. She was going to be strong and not hide away in her house. She ordered a white wine, while she was standing at the bar, she felt eyes in her back. She turned her head around and saw Robert sitting on the other side staring at her. She met his eyes and she noticed that she startled him. ‘Good’ she thought, she could see judgment on his face. He had clearly been talking about her with his friend. The man sitting opposite of him, was a big guy. About the same age as Robert was, probably a friend.

She was handed her glass of wine and decided to walk over to Robert. She was not in the mood for more negativity from his side. He had not spoken a word the rest of the afternoon. She had heard him mumble and she could only guess but was almost certain he was complaining about him. She had refused to ask him for help and instead wrote all her questions down and would go to Patrick tomorrow to get answers. She had scrolled through the website and internal page of the company to learn what projects they were taking on.

“Hello Mr. Crawley, she greeted him.” She took her hand out to the other man sitting at the table. “Hello, I am Cora Levinson.”

“John Bates.” The man answered. “You are the new addition from America?”

Cora grinded her teeth when John said addition, as if she was just a prop. She forced a smile and answered. “I indeed work for ‘Levinson and Son’ We look forward to working together with ‘Crawley Advertisements’ nice meeting you, Mr. Bates.” She did not know why she had walked over to them.

“How can we help you?” Robert asked.

Cora shook her shoulders. “Oh, I am alright. I only wanted to say hello. Enjoy your evening.” Cora turned around on her heels and walked to the terrace part of the pub. She was going to have a challenging time here the coming months she reckoned. She felt a little victory, she had noticed the way Robert had been staring at her. He was intrigued, she knew. Could she use this to her advantage?

Drabble – Waking up next to you.

Robert had woken up due to the scullery maid lighting up the fires. He rarely woke up from her, but this morning he had been in a light sleep. He kept still, so the girl would not notice, she woke him up. He did not want to embarras her.

Once the fire was burning high again and the maid left to tend the rest of the fires in the house, he turned on his side. Cora was curled up, sleeping on her side of the bed, facing in his direction. Her hair had gotten loose and was draped over her face and pillow.

The soft light of the fire gave Cora an angelic look. She had a serene look on her face. Robert was relieved to see her finally in a peaceful state again. Since her treatment started, Cora has, had many restless nights. She rarely admitted that to him, but he could see it in her eyes. There was a deep exhausting visible.

It reminded him of the many broken nights when the girls were young. Cora had insisted on feeding the girls herself. Much to his mother’s disdain. It resulted in her being awake a lot during the night. Even though she did not sleep much, her exhaustion had been different. She did get so much in return, she had said repeatedly and he could see it in the smiles their little girls gave her when she entered the room. As soon as she picked them up or started talking to them, they settled down. He had never been surprised by that, because her voice had the same affect on him.

This exhaustion was much deeper as if her whole body was weighing down on her. Every inch of her body was tired. It was no wonder she was this exhausted, her body had to work hard to keep her going and the treatment was far from, a fun ride on the carousel.

It was Rosamund who got her to take it easier. Cora had kept going on and on, not taking it any slower. Not wanting to disappoint anybody. Who did she think she would disappoint? Robert had thought. She had been the strong countess, especially on the day of Violet’s funeral. And even the days after, when there were no house guests and Dr. Clarkson started her treatment, Cora insisted on going on in their normal rhythm. Robert had tried to get her to slow down. He had told her, it was alright to not come down before lunch. It was even alright when she would decide to only come down for tea.

One afternoon, Rosamund had been over. They were all sitting in the drawing room. Tom and Lucy were talking about the plans they had with the villa when out of nowhere Cora dropped her cup. Rosamund had been the first, to take action.

“Cora, we better go upstairs.” She had said in a firm voice and helped Cora get up from the sofa. Robert had been scared when he saw how unstable she was. He had told her dinner would be brought up to her.

From that afternoon on, she stayed upstairs most of the day. Not waisting energy by walking downstairs. Robert carried her down, as soon as the walls of her room closed in on her. He was glad Cora let him take care of her.

Cora stirred in her sleep, Robert looked at her face again. A curl rested on her cheek, it had lost its deep chestnut brown colour. He loved the shimmering parts of grey in her hair. Scooting closer, he carefully put the curl behind her ear, and before he pulled his hand back, he traced her jawline.

Her skin was as soft as the first time he touched her, almost 40 years ago. He could not resist and pressed his lips on her forehead. He could still smell her night creme, it had a soft flowery smell.

Robert moved his hand to Cora’s shoulder and upper arm. He brushed over the silky fabric of her nightdress, he would love to feel her skin. It was a long time ago, she had enough energy for him. He felt instantly guilty because Cora had never denied him anything before they went to France. And she had been sick already. She had shown so much strength. He could never be that strong, he thought.

Cora moved and the curl that he just tucked away, draped over her cheek again. He picked it up and twirled it around his finger. He loved these stolen moments, where Cora did not know he was looking at her. Studying every line on her face, every little movement of her eyebrows. His other hand rested on her pillow, just above her head.

He saw her mouth twitch and a soft smile appeared, but her eyes were still closed. He knew she was waking up, he could see a slight change in the tension in her jaw. Her hand moved and now rested against his chest.

He moved his hand that was resting on her pillow and buried it into her hair, softly massaging her scalp. Cora let out a deep sigh and nestled herself firmly against Robert’s body. His left arm wrapped around her and rested between her shoulder blades. He felt Cora angle her face up and her lips pressed against his chest. Right on the spot where his nightshirt fell open. A slight shiver went through his body. “Good morning” she murmured.

Robert pressed a kiss on the top of Cora’s head. “Good morning my love.”

Cora wiggled herself even closer to his body and he felt another deep sigh leave her body. One of her feet found its way between his calves, he loved that feeling. As if she was trying to become one with him. Her hand had found its way under his shirt, making sure she was connected with him. He admired her so much, how she found ways to stay intimate with him, even though she lacked the energy to truly be with him.

“How long have you been staring at me?” She asked.

Robert felt embarrassed, he did not realize she had noticed. He had done it so many times over the last weeks. Not only when she was sleeping, but every chance he got he studied her. As if he wanted to ingrain every memory of her in his mind.

“I am not going anywhere.” Cora said as if she had read his mind.

Robert pressed her even firmer against his chest. He knew Dr. Clarkson had said she was not going to die. Not yet, but he could not rest before she was truly better.

While her one hand stayed on his chest, she moved the other one up and touched his cheek. He felt how she pushed herself up, so her face was at the same level as his.

“I will get better. And I feel better already.” Her eyes met his and he did not see anything besides her love for him.

“Oh, darling.” His words caught in his throat. He used the exact same words that night in France. Another escaped curl rested on her forehead. He picked it up, twirled it around his finger before tucking it away.

“Do you think I should die my hair?”

Robert was surprised by her question. “I love the silver linings in your hair. They represent all the silver linings you brought into my life.” He touched the wrinkles next to Cora’s eyes and mouth. “As do these beautiful lines. They tell me the story of our life together.”

He felt Cora chuckle. “You romantic fool.” She said softly, but with so much love in her voice.

“Only for you, my darling. Only for you.” Softly he pressed his lips on hers.

But Papa! Why? Chapter 4

Robert was looking down at the reception desk. He was standing on the first floor. He wanted to see the new guy, before they were introduced. From up here, he was not visible, but he could see everything.

A young woman entered the building. She was wearing a dark blue pantsuit with high heels. She had a slender figure. She was standing straight and her shoulders back. Chestnut brown curls were cascading down over her back.

He saw Rosamund enter the lobby and walk over to her. They seemed to know each other. He had never seen her before, but maybe she was a new friend of Rosamund?

“Cora? What are you doing here?” Rosamund said, stepping into the lobby.

She was surprised to see the woman she met last night in the pub. Slowly she realised what was happening. She had told her she came from America to work here.

“Do not tell me, you work for ‘Levinson and Son?’ ” Rosamund said surprised.

Cora nodded. “I am Isidor Levinson’s daughter and work in the company.”

Rosamund smiled. “I have to apologise, I was expecting a man.”

This made Cora chuckle. “Because of the son part in our company’s name. I understand the confusion.”

“In all the correspondence was only writter, C. Levinson. Well, Mr. Crawley is waiting for you in his office.” Rosamund looked at the receptionist. “I will bring her upstairs.” She said to the woman, and started walking.

Robert was still watching the scene beneath him, unfortunately, he could not hear what they were saying, but he saw the woman follow Rosamund. He looked at his watch, that guy from ‘Levinson and Son’ was late he thought. Typical. His phone rang. “Robert” he answered.

“Where are you?” His father’s voice sounded.”The new colleague and representative of ‘Levinson and son’ arrived.”

How was that possible Robert thought, how did he miss that? “I am on my way.” Quickly he put his phone back in his pocket and rushed to his father’s office.

+++

“There you are.” His father greeted when he entered his office.

In the chair in front of his father’s desk, he saw that same woman from the reception. Upon hearing his father’s greeting she turned around. Robert was taken aback by the blue of her eyes and for a second he was mesmerised.

He shook his head to wake himself up and stepped closer with his hand outstretched.

The woman took his hand, her fingers were slender, like her whole figure as he had noticed before, her hand was soft as silk. “Hello, I am Cora Levinson, you must be Mr. Crawley.” She said.

Cora noticed a shock on the man’s face when she turned around. As did Rosamund and Mr. Crawley just now, he also was expecting a male. She could not blame them. She already disliked the name of their company and at this moment even more. Again it felt as if she was not important. She sighed, took his outstretched hand and introduced herself. She saw his eyes staring into hers. A pair of light blue eyes stared at her and she had to admit, they were beautiful.

Robert had to reprimand himself again because he was staring into her eyes. He noticed a soft smile on her face as if she knew what went on in his head. Did she realize how beautiful she was? he thought. “You can call me Robert, to prevent misunderstandings.” He gestured at his father. “As we are both Mr. Crawley.” He emphasized the word Mr.

It did not go unnoticed that there was irritation in Robert’s voice and he knew Cora picked up on it. That made his irritation even worse, what was she doing here? As if she knew anything about the business. Clearly, her father named the business ‘Levinson and Son’ for a reason.

“I have to apologise for our weird behaviour. We were not expecting a woman.” Mr. Crawley said. “You can call me Patrick, we will be close colleagues and it will be easier when we address each other by our first name. I hope you will feel welcome in our company. Robert arranged a desk for you. He will tell you everything you need to know. But know that my door is always open.” He smiled at her and then looked at Robert. “Can you show her the way and tell her where she can find the things she need?”

Cora followed Robert to a different office. Patrick his father seemed a very nice man and although he was surprised to see that she was a woman, he did not mind. Robert on the other hand was not hiding his disappointment very well.

“Is Rosamund also an employee here?” She asked when they walked into their office, trying to keep a conversation going.

Robert turned around so abruptly that he startled Cora. “You mean Rosamund Crawley?” It pleased him to see the startled look on Cora’s face.

Cora felt her cheeks burn, why was he so condescending to her? “Yes I mean her, according to her name, I guess she is also a family member.” She answered.

“She is my sister.” Robert pointed at a simple desk with a very basic chair in front of it. “This is your desk and this.” He pointed towards a more luxurious desk, with a very comfortable-looking office chair. “This is my desk.”

Cora decided to ignore him. “I met Rosamund yesterday evening, we were dining in the same pub.”

“You do not dine in a pub.” Robert snapped. “You just go there and grab something to eat. Dining is something you do in a proper restaurant.” Very soft he continued. “Stupid American.”

Cora could not understand the last part, but she knew he had made a nasty comment. These months would be hard, why was Robert this hostile? Did he think she was going to steal his job?

“I have a lot to learn about the English culture, in America we do a lot of things differently.” She saw Robert furrow his eyebrows. “But I am very eager to learn more about the British culture.” He was not going to get her to bow for him, never. She had to bow too much at home already, Robert should learn they were equal, whether he liked it or not.

“There is a lot to do today. I made a list and guide for you, so you know what we expect from you.” He sat down at his desk and pretended Cora was not in the same room. His father must think he was stupid. This woman, how was miss pretty face going to help them.

Cora sat down at her desk, she was not used to having such a simple desk. Back in America, she had a moving desk, where she could stand or sit. Her chair was an ergonomic one specially made for her. It looked like the one Robert was sitting on. She looked over at him, she had to admit, it was a handsome fella. He had dark brown hair, and his face was a little chubby, but it gave him a very cute look, Cora thought. He was tall, she was not small herself, but Robert was taller she had noticed. When you saw him the first time, you immediately thought: ‘What a nice guy.’ But he had shown her a different side. With a deep sigh, she opened the notebook in front of her. There was only one line: ‘Questions you can ask Mr. Crawley.’ Cora felt anger coming up. Robert was playing a game with her, but he had underestimated her, she could play too.

But Papa! Why? Chapter 3

I updated the description. This is a modern AU story, set in the present time

“Can you see if it is under Isidor Levinson?” Cora asked. She was getting frustrated; the taxi driver had dropped her off in front of the apartment building. Her father had bought an apartment in Hammersmith, she would have panoramas of the river Thames, along with London’s skyline. As always, her father had not spared any expenses for her. He had told her that the concierge would hand her the key. But that guy was not willing to cooperate and did not hand her anything.

Cora rubbed her temples; she was tired and wanted to take a bath before she would go out and explore her surroundings.

“I am Mr. Levinson’s daughter, here you can see my ID. I am Miss. Levinson.”

With a suspicious look on his face, the concierge took her ID. “This is an American ID.” He said.

“That is correct sir. My father as well as myself, is American. My father bought this apartment because I am going to work here in London. Do you want me to call him?” Cora looked at her watch. It was 10 o’clock, and her father was still asleep in New York. He was not going to be happy if she would wake him up. “Even though I am not sure, he will answer. We have a 5-hour time difference. He will not be happy to be woken up, just for telling you, you can hand me the keys.”

She knew her father had sent a lot of money, to make sure her apartment would be ready, and her luggage would be put inside her home. She did not like to threaten this concierge, but if he was going to be stubborn for much longer, she would.

The concierge did not say anything, and still looked at her ID.

“I will call my father, but.” She paused for a second to see if he was reacting. “It will have a consequence for the bonus he was going to send.” She saw that her words had the right impact. She was handed the keys. With a sigh, she walked to the lift.

Robert did a last check, he wanted to be sure everything was present on the new desk. The colleague from America would come tomorrow, he was still dreading it.

He opened his laptop and started working on the last request that came in. A recently opened sky bar wanted their expertise for a new advertisement campaign. Patrick, his father had said he should wait and work on it together with the new colleague. But Robert was stubborn and wanted this project to be his. He knew he could not finish it before tomorrow, but at least he would be the one deciding on the direction. He wanted to be in the lead. Show him who was the boss in this London office.

“Are you very busy?” Rosamund’s voice sounded.

Robert looked up. “Depending on your question.”

Rosamund chuckled. “That is a fair answer, I am going out for dinner and a drink, do you want to join me?”

“Is Marmaduke not joining you?” Robert said semi surprised.

Rosamund gave him a dirty look. “I am allowed to do things without him. But never mind, I did not ask you anything. Enjoy your evening alone.”

Robert watched her leave. He scolded himself, he should be nicer towards her. Now he was forced to have dinner at his mother’s house. She had asked him this morning. Now he regretted not taking Rosamund’s offer.

Cora entered a pub nearby at the riverside. She had fallen asleep in the bathtub. She felt refreshed and tired at the same time. The jetlag was already hitting her. It was the first time she was in London, and it was a weird experience. They spoke the same language, but she did not understand a word of what the people around her said to each other. She stood in the doorway, not knowing what to do. There was no host to welcome people.

Somebody pushed her aside. She was standing in the way. She muttered an apology. A red-haired woman was looking in her direction. The woman was sitting on her own at a table. Cora quickly looked away; she did not want to be rude. She did not see an empty table and she was not sure what to do. She needed to eat something, so she walked towards the bar and took an empty bar stool.

“What can I get you?” One of the bartenders asked.

“A water please.” Cora was aware of how insecure she sounded. Why did she feel like this? She had never been insecure in New York.

Cora looked around the pub and noticed the red-haired woman was still looking at her. She felt herself blushing and tried to look in another direction.

A woman appeared next to her. “a Merlot please.” Cora noticed that it was the red-haired woman. “Can I offer you a drink.”

Cora raised her eyebrows. “You are asking me?” she said surprised.

“Yes, I was asking you. It looked like you were looking for a table, I have a table for myself and can use some company. Did you already look at the menu?”

Cora was confused, why was this woman so nice to her.

The bartender handed the woman her glass and looked at Cora. “Do not worry, this is Lady Rosamund, and she always is nice when there is a new face inside the pub.

“Oh.” Cora did not like how she reacted; they must think she was slow. “Well, I would love to eat something, what do you recommend since you know this place.”

“You do not sound as if you are from England, do you like fish?”

“I am from New York, and I love fish.”

“Go for the fish&chips the best way to get to know the English culture. For me Bangers and mash please, and another glass for her.”

Cora followed Rosamund to her table.

“I figure that this is your first time in London? When did you arrive?”

“This morning and yes this is my first time.”

“What brings you to this pub, we normally do not see a lot of tourists here.” Rosamund took a sip of her wine.

“My apartment is in Henley Apartments, and the concierge told me about this pub.” Cora answered.

“You are living here?” Rosamund said surprised.

Cora felt her cheeks colour again. “I am working here in London, and we bought an apartment in Hammersmith, because the office is also located here.

A young woman brought their dinner.
