Love isn’t always easy. Chapter 27

“Can you please come with me.” Rosamund said to Mary. “I asked your mother, but she doesn’t have time and I would love to see this fashion show.”

“You could go alone.” Mary answered.

Rosamund pulled a face. “What’s the fun in that?”

“Just ask Edith.” Mary said annoyed.

“I need you, I love your eye for fashion.”

Mary chuckled. “You are right, Edith doesn’t have any taste. When is this?”

Rosamund smiled and ignored the insult. “Next week. I will come and pick you up.”

+++

“Are you sure she is coming?” Cora asked Rosamund, while feeding Anne.

“Yes, I am sure. We will see a fashion show and then I will bring her to the Ritz for lunch.”

“Good. Thank you for doing this.” Cora put Anne on her shoulder to help her burp. “I am sorry we are dragging you into this.”

“Don’t be silly. I am happy to help. By the way, did you already have some me time today?”

Cora looked at Rosamund in surprise, she joked: “What is that?”

“Cora! Don’t tell me you didn’t have a moment for yourself?”

“When Anne is sleeping, I can work on my paintings.”

“You know that isn’t the same as me-time. Why don’t I go for a walk with Anne, so you can have a long warm bath.”

Cora sighed. “That sounds nice. Are you sure? I will take my phone with me to the bathroom, so you can reach me.”

“Don’t be silly. Anne and I will be alright. Please take your time. When does Anne need another feeding?” Rosamund picked her up from Cora’s shoulder.

“She comes every 3 to 4 hours at the moment.” Cora saw how Anne moulded her little body against Rosamund. It melted her heart. She kissed Rosamund on her cheek. “Thank you for doing this.”

Rosamund smiled. “Of course, now go on, go.” She nudged Cora upstairs.

+++

Cora let herself sink in the hot water. She touched her belly. Anne was 1 month old now, but her belly was still floppy. She remembered with her girls, she was back in shape in no time. But she clearly was older this time. She thought of Edith. Was she having morning sickness? Did she feel alright? Cora sighed, she didn’t expect this to happen, but most of all she didn’t expect to not talk to her daughters for weeks.

Cora took a deep breath and let her head go underwater. She enjoyed the silence that surrounded her.

Suddenly two hands grabbed her shoulders and from shock she gasped and choked in the bathwater.

Spluttering, she came above water and looked into Robert’s bewildered eyes. “What were you doing?” He said shocked.

Cora coughed up the water from her lungs. “What?” She muttered through her coughing.

Robert padded her back. “I thought……. I……..”

“Oh darling. Did you think I was trying to kill myself?”

Robert stared at his feet and nodded.

“Sweetheart, come here.” She put both hands around his face and pulled him close for a kiss. “I would never do that. Not with all the fun things we have ahead of us.” She kissed him again.

Robert chuckled. “Maybe, you should get out of the tub first. You are getting me all wet.”

Cora looked at him and indeed his shirt was drenched. “Sorry.” She got up, and wrapped herself in the towel, Robert was holding up.

“Where is Anne?” He asked.

Rosamund is with her, she said she was going for a walk. What are you doing home at this hour of the day?” Cora asked.

“I forgot some files, I wanted to say hello and found you under the water.”

Cora gave him a warm smile. “I am alright.” She put her curls up in a quick bun and then she was swift up off her feet. Robert’s strong arms were around her and he carried her to the bedroom. “I want you.” He murmured against her neck.

Cora felt her whole body react to his words, she wrapped her arms around his neck and started to place kisses randomly on his cheek and neck, when she bit his earlobe, he almost dropped her. What made them both chuckle.

Robert laid Cora down on their bed and placed himself on top of her. “I missed you.” He said while placing kisses on her lips. Cora’s hands rested on his lower back. “I missed you too.”

Robert’s hand moved from her thighs to her intimate spot; he felt Cora shiver and stopped. “Does this hurt?”

“A little bit.” Cora answered, but when Robert pulled his hand back, she quickly said. “But not enough to stop!” She took his hand and moved with him, she arched her back to give him better access.

Robert moved his fingers and he felt her getting tighter around him. It aroused him and he replaced his fingers with his manhood. Cora’s nails dug into his skin.

“I love it when you use those muscles.” Robert said while lying down next to Cora.

Cora’s fingers played with his hair, he felt her laugh. “What muscles.” She said semi-innocent. Suddenly she froze. “Did you hear that?” She said getting up a little.

Robert’s hand was still on Cora’s breast. “I didn’t hear anything.” He squeezed her breast.

Cora took his hand off. “I think Rosamund is back.”

Robert jerked up, do you think she will come upstairs?”

“As long as Anne isn’t crying, I don’t think so. But otherwise, I think she will search for me. She got up from the bed and quickly put on her clothes. Robert followed her example. Robert was still closing the buttons on his shirt, when there was a knock on the door.

“Cora? Are you awake?” Rosamund’s voice sounded.

Robert finally finished dressing himself and opened the door. He said to a surprised Rosamund. “She is.” turned around and said to Cora. “I will see you tonight. I will be home for dinner.” He then walked past Rosamund and left.

“That was a surprise, seeing my brother here.” She said with a cheeky smile.

Cora coloured. “It was indeed.”

+++

“Aunt Rosamund. You didn’t have to reserve the Ritz. I would have loved to have lunch somewhere else.”

“I know, but only the best for my niece.” She hooked her arm in Mary’s and walked inside.

The waiter showed them to their table and she had to grab Mary’s arm a bit tighter, when she spotted Cora and Robert.

“What are they doing here?” Mary said annoyed and tried to turn around.

“Please sit down darling.” Cora stood up and put her hand on Mary’s arm. “Happy early birthday, sweetheart.” She kissed her cheek.

Reluctantly Mary sat down. “I am not celebrating my birthday this year.”

“That’s alright.” Cora said. “We just wanted to see you.” She looked at Robert.

“Mary, I think I have to give you my apologies.” Robert said. “You telling on Edith was wrong, but me constantly talking about Matthew also. Can we start over, I need you in the company.”

“I don’t understand why Edith didn’t tell it herself.” Mary started.

“Mary.” Cora said very softly.

Mary sighed. “But yes, I am coming back and so is Matthew. He misses you.” Mary chuckled.

“You can help me sell the house, but first you need to finish your studies.”

“Deal” was Mary’s answer.

“Let’s eat.” Rosamund said.

Love isn’t always easy. Chapter 25

Robert came home from work and found Cora sleeping on the sofa. He decided not to kiss her, afraid he would wake her up. The cot next to the sofa was empty. ‘That is strange’ he thought. Cora would not sleep downstairs if Anne was upstairs. He heard soft crying coming from upstairs.

He walked towards Anne’s room and heard sussing sounds. Inside her room he found Mary on the rocking chair, with Anne in her arms.

“Hi.” Robert said softly.

Mary looked up. “Oh I am sorry, papa. But when I came, I found mama fast asleep and a crying Anne next to her. So I decided to go upstairs with her trying to calm her down.”

“No need to say sorry. I am happy you are helping your mother out.”

“Is Mama alright?” Mary asked, still rocking Anne.

“Your mother is just tired from the birth, she will be alright.” Robert answered.

“Anne is now 2 weeks old, Mama should be regaining her energy by now.” Mary frowned. In the meantime Anne had started screaming.

“I think she is hungry.” Robert said.

“I will bring her to mum.” Mary stood up and walked downstairs.

Downstairs, Robert woke Cora up. She felt warm to the touch and it worried Robert, she wasn’t waking up from Anne’s crying. With the other girls, she woke up the minute they made a sound. “Cora, darling. Anne needs you.”

Cora opened her eyes halfway. “Can you give her a bottle?” She said weakly.

“We don’t have any formula, darling, what’s wrong?”

Mary stepped closer. “Mama, just open up your shirt, you can lay down, I will latch Anne to your breast.” She said.

Robert opened Cora’s blouse and pulled down the nursing bra. Mary laid Anne down next to her. Automatically Cora wrapped her arm around her little girl.

Once Anne was drinking, Mary pulled her father away. “Dad, you need to call the doctor. Something is really wrong with Mama. Did you see her colour?”

“I will call immediately.”

+++

Cora was hanging on Robert’s arm, she managed to get out of the car. Back home Mary had helped, but now he was alone. And he also needed to carry Anne in her car seat.

“Darling, should I get a wheelchair?”

Cora nodded.

“Wait here.” He helped her down on a bench. It worried him, she agreed to a wheelchair, she felt really sick then.

After some tests, they discovered Cora was anaemic. Her levels were incredibly low and it explained her high temperature. Her body was working hard to keep functioning.

“We will start with some supplements, if you don’t feel better in three days, we need to give you a blood transfusion.” The doctor said to Cora.

Robert looked at her, she never looked so small. Her shoulders bent down forwards and her head low. He was going to make sure she was taking her medicines and would ask one of the girls to help him cook food, that’s high on iron.

“Let me check the little girl.” The doctor said looking at Robert. “Just to make sure, she doesn’t have any shortness.”

+++

Fortunately the supplements did their job and Cora started to feel better. She was still tired, but the doctor had said, it would take a long time before that would improve.

Cora was standing in the kitchen, preparing dinner. Mary, Edith, Sybil, Rosamund and Violet were coming for dinner.

“Cora? Can I help?” Robert asked.

Cora looked up. Robert saw the dark circles under her eyes. Before she could answer, Robert stepped towards her and hugged her in a tight hug. He turned down the heat and said. “We will order in. Come sit down.” He pulled her towards a chair.

Reluctantly she followed. “Robert, we can’t order fries, your mother is coming. I need to prepare a proper meal.”

Robert took her hand. “You can instruct me. What do I need to do.”

Cora chuckled and leaned forward, kissing him. “I am not sure, it will work this way. I manage.” She was already getting up again, when Sybil entered the kitchen.

“Can I help?” She asked and got a thankful look from Robert.

Cora sighed. “Sweetheart, you are here to eat, not to cook.”

“The doctor ordered you to take some rest, so please, sit down and tell me what you were making.”

Cora gave Sybil instructions. Robert brought Anne in who needed to be fed.

+++

“Does Matthew already know when he will start in the company full time?”

Mary frowned and gave a quick look around the table. Nobody seemed to react to this question.

“I can’t wait to tell him everything.” Robert continued. “I just know we will make an amazing team together.”

Cora got alerted, by Robert’s words. Didn’t he understand he was hurting Mary with this? She looked at Mary, who stared at her plate.

“Maybe he will follow me up one day. Wouldn’t that be amazing?” Robert looked at Cora, who tried to silence him with her eyes, but he didn’t pick up her clues.

“We could start opening offices in different cities around England.” Robert went on and on. Rosamund looked at Cora, who gave her a hopeless look.

Finally Mary snapped. “Maybe, we could change the subject. What about Edith and her pregnancy before she is even asked to marry?

Edith’s face drained all colour and an audible gasp went around the table.

“Don’t be ridiculous Mary, Edith would never do something like that.” Robert said.

“I wouldn’t be too sure about that.” Violet said. “Edith? Is this true what Mary is saying?”

“Does anybody want some more potatoes?” Cora tried.

“Let Edith answer my question.” Violet said brisk.

Edith coloured bright red. “I, I.” She stammered and looked at Cora.

“Accidents can happen and it happened to your sister.” Cora said towards Mary. “I don’t want to find out you told anybody else.” She continued on a firmer tone. She looked at Violet. “Whatever you think of this, I will always support my daughter, no matter what.”

Through the baby monitor the sounds of Anne who was crying filled the now dead silent dining area. Cora got up, she didn’t want to leave Edith alone, but she knew Rosamund would stick up for her.

Cora was changing Anne’s diaper, when Robert entered her bedroom. “Why didn’t you tell me about Edith?” He said.

“She asked me not to tell you. I said she should tell you soon, but unfortunately her big sister couldn’t resist shaming her. I wonder how she found out.”

“Let’s not focus on Mary telling us, but on Edith being pregnant.” Robert said annoyed.

“I don’t know what is worse. Edith being pregnant all of the sudden, or Mary wanting to hurt and shame her sister.

Love isn’t always easy. Chapter 26

Cora put Anne back in her crib. She gave her a warm bath, hoping it would help with her cramps. It was already very late in the evening and Robert was still not home. He was working very late recently. Fortunately he sold her house for a very good price and he was going to put their old house on the market.

Mary had refused to work in the office over the last few days. After her outburst and her telling Edith’s secret, she hadn’t shown her face. Not at the office and not at home. In the meantime Sybil was bugging her about their own wedding. She wanted to pick a date with Tom, but didn’t want it to be too close to the one of Cora and Robert and Mary and Matthew.

Cora got back in bed, and found Robert’s place still empty. She unlocked her phone to see if he sent her a message. Nothing. She pulled up the duvet and tried to catch some sleep. In a couple of hours, Anne would come for a feeding again. Cora had forgotten how hard the first weeks with a new born were. She didn’t paint enough, her orders were piling up and with Robert working all the time there wasn’t much time for them together. The longest she had talked with him this week was with the counsellor. She sighed, she really needed to sleep and all this thinking wasn’t helping.

+++

Robert locked the office and looked at his watch. It was 1am, Cora would probably be asleep by now. He wished he had more time to spend at home, but with all the leave he had taken during her pregnancy, he couldn’t afford to let the work pile up anymore. He was working on the listing of their old home, but it proved difficult for him to do so. And he couldn’t ask Mary, because she wasn’t talking with him.

He got in his car, he should talk with Cora about their wedding day. He didn’t want to have a big day. Only close friends and family. But he didn’t know what Cora was expecting.

He found Cora asleep when he entered their bedroom. He was glad to see her sleeping. Anne was waking up a lot in the night and it was exhausting, especially for Cora, who insisted she should be the one getting up. He quickly undressed and got into bed.

Cora turned around and scooted closer to him, wrapping her arm around his chest. Robert loved this feeling. Although they didn’t talk much lately, Cora still wanted him close. He kissed the top of her head and closed his eyes.

+++

When Robert woke up, Cora was gone. Her spot was cold to the touch, so she was up for a while now. Robert felt sorry for her, he knew she had a lot of work and was still battling her anaemia. He got up and went to Anne’s room, suspecting to find Cora there. He was right, she was sitting in the rocking chair, with Anne on her chest, both in a deep sleep. Robert picked up a blanket and draped it over them. Cora moved, but didn’t wake up.

Robert went downstairs to make breakfast. While he was almost finished reading the morning paper he felt Cora’s fingers playing with his hair.

“Good morning, thank you for covering me up.” She said, kissing his cheek. Anne was close to her chest in a sling.

Cora wanted to walk on, but Robert grabbed her hand and pulled her back. He pulled her on his lap and kissed her. “Good morning, my darling.”

Cora chuckled, her hand on his cheek. “I love you, you know that right?”

Robert’s hand rested on Cora’s hip, he looked at her in surprise. “I do know that.”

“Good.” She got up, turned around and kissed him again. “We should talk about our wedding day soon.”

Robert hummed. “What are we going to do with Mary and Edith?”

Cora sat down with a deep sigh. She took a sip of her coffee. “I don’t know.”

“I should go talk with Bertie.” Robert contemplated “He needs to marry her.”

“Darling.” Cora took his hand. “He already asked you for her hand. Maybe they want to wait now? Because of the pregnancy.”

“Ugh. I just can’t believe Edith is pregnant.”

“She is 20, almost 21. I was the same age as her.” Cora said, caressing Anne’s back, who was fussing.

“But we were married.” Robert said.

Cora raised her eyebrows. “If I recall correctly, you only asked me.” She chuckled.

“It’s easy to forget. I just want to protect her, she will always be my little girl, all of them will.” He got up. “Enjoy your day.”

“Before you go, can you please stay for 15 more minutes and watch Anne. I love to take a shower.”

“I am already late.” He said he got up and kissed Cora. “Sorry.”

“It’s alright, I will squeeze in a shower when she sleeps.” She had hoped to finish a painting, but she could try that with Anne in the sling. “Can we talk tonight?”

Robert never heard her last question. Cora sighed, there was something on Robert’s mind that he wasn’t telling her.

+++

“Why is the house not on sale yet?” Rosamund asked, sitting in Robert’s office.

Robert gave her an annoyed look. “Did Cora send you?”

Rosamund shook her head. “No, she didn’t. You know, I won’t let you send me anywhere.”

“I can’t say goodbye to all the memories there.”

“Darling brother, your memories are always with you, they aren’t tight to that house.”

“I know you are right, but it feels different.”

“Robert! I know you have enough money and you can bear these extra costs. But what if something happens and you can’t? What are you going to do then?”

“I don’t know. Somehow I still secretly hope we can move back there.”

“Aha.” Rosamund said. “That is why you aren’t selling. Robert, I can promise you: Cora will never move back to that home. She wanted and needed a new and fresh start.”

“You are right, again. I will put it up soon.”

“I will check it if you did! Now, how is Mary?”

“I don’t know. She doesn’t talk to me or Cora.” Robert lowered his eyes.

Rosamund knew what she needed to do.

Love isn’t always easy. Chapter 24

Robert was pacing around. Cora was having a hard time. This labour wasn’t easy on her. Sybil was with her mother, giving Robert some time to relax. Even though he wasn’t relaxing.

“Robert sit down, will you.” Rosamund said.

“I should be with Cora.”

“She has Sybil. Sit down and eat something. You are up and running for hours now.”

“So is Cora. What if she can’t do it.” They heard a scream coming from Cora’s room. Robert jerked up and ran towards her.

+++

“Auwwwww, make it stop.” Cora cried.

“Keep breathing. In and out.” The nurse said.

“No, no. I can’t, please take it out.” She cried again.

She felt Sybil’s hand on her forehead. She looked up, but another contraction hit and she grabbed the sheets. The pain was unbearable, why wasn’t she allowed to push. She was in labour for hours. With her girls it didn’t take this long. “Auwww.” She couldn’t hold it in anymore and was screaming from pain.

Suddenly she felt Robert’s hand in hers. She tried to smile at him. “Robert? You were going to eat something.” She said through her pain.

“Don’t worry about me. Can I do something?” Robert said.

Cora winched. “Get this baby out, please. I can’t do this.”

“One more centimeter and you can start pushing.” The nurse said.

Cora only heard the word push and started pushing.

“Cora, stop. Don’t push, you will have to wait..” Robert said.

“Stop pushing.” The nurse said.

“Cora! Cora, stop. Breath, come on, breath.” Cora felt Robert’s hands on her face, he tried to get her to focus. “Cora, look at me. Breath in, and breath out. You can do this. You are almost there.”

Shakily Cora took a deep breath and started to breath the contraction away. The second it slipped aside she took Robert’s hand. “How long do I have to do this? I am tired.”

Robert squeezed her hand. “I know you are, but you can do this. You are almost there.” Sybil handed him a wet cloth, he placed it on her forehead. When he noticed a contraction started again, he offered her his hand. “Squeeze my hand, you can do this.”

+++

A couple of hours later, Cora finally got the green light to start pushing. Fortunately this stage of her labour was a bit easier, although the pain was more intense.

About an hour later, the nurse placed a crying baby on her chest. “Congratulations with your baby girl.” She said.

Cora searched for Robert’s eyes and without a word she said sorry.

Robert bent down and kissed her forehead. “No reason to say sorry. Oh darling, I am so incredibly proud of you.” He touched the little girls cheek.

Cora smiled. Looking down, a perfect little girl was lying on her chest. She looked up and searched for Sybil. “Where is Sybil?”

“She left the room, before you started pushing.” Robert said.

The nurse handed him the siscor to cut the umbilicalcoard. Than she took the baby away for the check up.

Robert used this change to kiss Cora on her lips. “Oh darling.” He murmured. He felt Cora’s hand in his hair. “You don’t know how proud I am of you.”

“What a day.” She said, closing her eyes.

“Cora, I know you want to sleep, but you need to stay awake for a little longer.”

“Ooooh” Cora moaned.

“Are you having another contraction?” Robert asked worried.

“It’s the after birth Papa.” He heard Sybil say.

“Oh, I forgot.” He sat down next to Cora again and offered his hand another time.

+++

Rosamund, Mary and Edith paid Cora a short visit. Cora was exhausted and it was in the middle of the night.

“Cora?” Robert said softly, hoping she was still awake.

“Hmmm.” She opened her eyes.

“We haven’t discussed a name.” Robert said, softly brushing Cora’s hand

“What are you thinking of?” She asked.

“Do you like: Anne?”

Cora was already falling asleep, but managed to say: “I do.”

Robert chuckled. She said I do twice to him, today.

+++

“Mama?” Robert said through the phone. He had waited for the morning before he called.

“Good morning.” Violet said.

“You are a grandmother again.” Robert said. “We are in the hospital and you are welcome to meet your granddaughter.”

+++

“Mama, is coming.” Robert said putting his phone back in his pocket. He looked at Cora who was breastfeeding Anne.

“Why did you pick Anne, for her name?” Cora asked, while stroking the little girls back.

“It means: favored by God. And I think she is a miracle from up there.” Robert’s voice broke.

Cora stretched out her free hand. “I love it.”

“You don’t know how happy you make me.” Robert said, sitting down on the bed. He put his hand on Anne’s back. “You did so wonderful yesterday.”

Cora sighed: “I don’t know how I made it. I really thought I would not make it.”

The door of her room openend and Mary entered with Violet.

“Good morning, Mama, Papa. I picked up Grandmama.” She kissed her mother on her cheek. “Hello little one.” She touched Anne’s cheek, eho finished drinking. “What is her name name?” She looked up to Robert.

Robert kissed his mother on her cheek. “Come and meet our little Anne.” He said

“Oh, I love that name.” Mary exclaimed.

Cora cupped her cheek. She leaned forward. “Can you give Anne, to Grandmama?” Handing the baby to Mary.

Robert watched it from the side. It was an adorable sight. Edith and Sybil also returned to the hospital.

Anne started crying and Violet looked around where she could hand her. Sybil stepped forward.

Cora saw Edith stepping back. “Edith?” She said, stretching her hand out. “Did you hold Anne already?”

Sybil heard the question and handed Anne to Edith. “Anne needs to meet all her sisters.”

Mary stepped closer and all three of them were looking at Anne. Robert stepped next to Cora’s bed, taking her hand. “Our girls.” He said, so only she could hear.

“When are you allowed to go home?” Violet asked Cora.

“This afternoon, they just did the last check up and everything is alright, with mother and child.” Robert answered.

“Good” Violet said.

“Can you let Rosamund know when we are home?” Cora asked Robert.

Robert didn’t know why, but he agreed.

+++

It took Cora some time to climb the stairs, but finally she was in her bed. She was exhausted and wanted to sleep, but Rosamund was on her way.

“Cora, Rosamund already met Anne. Why does she need to come. You need your rest.”

“I need to ask her something. I will sleep afterwards I promise. Can you get Anne, when Rosamund is here?”

Rosamund arrived and Robert brought Anne. He was about the hand her to Cora, but Cora nodded at Rosamund, so he gave her to Rosamund.

“Rosamund?” Cora started. “This little one needs a Godmother and I hoped you wanted to take that role on you.”

Rosamund’s eyes got teary. “Really?”

Robert put his hand on his shoulder. He didn’t know Cora was going to ask this, but he stood behind her idea. Rosamund was godmother of Edith and now also Anne. “Yes, really.” He said. “Now we will leave Cora.” He saw her eyes falling shut. “You can change Anne if you want.”

Love isn’t always easy. Chapter 23

“Are you sure, this is what you want?” Rosamund asked Cora when she closed the door to her home. They had moved the last things out of the house and did the last check before it would go on listing.

Cora sighed and looked up to the house. “This was just a temporary place for me.”

“It wasn’t when you bought it.” Rosamund touched her arm. “Are you and Robert really alright?”

Cora smiled at Rosamund. “Thank you for asking. But yes, I think we are alright. Counselling helps a lot. We have never expressed our feelings towards each other in the way we do now. We have to thank you for it.”

Rosamund lowered her eyes. “You don’t have to. I am just glad it is working out. Because this little one is coming soon.” She briefly touched Cora’s belly.

Cora saw the longing in her eyes and once they were back in the car, she took Rosamund’s hand and placed it on her belly. “This little one is once more in need of your love.”

Rosamund looked up, her eyes clouded. “It’s your baby. Yours and Robert’s. And I bet your girls want to spend a lot of time with their brother or sister.”

Cora squeezed Rosamund’s hand. “But the love of an aunt is something special and something only an aunt can give. In less than two months we will meet this little one.”

Rosamund took a deep breath. “You are a darling. Let’s go home.” Robert had asked her to bring Cora back home on time. She thought it was because Robert was worried Cora did too much. Her back was hurting a lot, although she didn’t complain, it was clearly visible that this baby was asking a lot of Cora’s body.

“Rosamund? Do you regret not taking the medical road to have children?”

“You know Marmaduke’s opinion about that. He believes children are meant to be or not.”

Cora nodded.

+++

“I will put your house on sale tomorrow.” Robert said when Cora sat down on one of the arm chairs. He had brought her a cup of tea. “I have a little surprise for you.” He said while handing her the cup.

“Oh?” Cora said, her hand rubbing her belly. The baby was very active and moving around using her hips as goal posts.

“We will have a maternity photoshoot tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?” Cora sat straight up. “But I don’t have anything nice to wear.”

“Oh yes, you have.” She heard Sybil say. All three of her girls came around the corner. “We went shopping for you.”

Cora felt tears on her cheeks, her hormones made her cry so easily.

“We bought two outfits for you. A very comfy one and a nice one.” Edith said.

Mary opened the bag and held up a beautiful navy blue satin dress. “Please try it on.” She said.

Cora got up, with Robert’s help and followed her girls to the bedroom. Soon she was standing in the dress. The gentle darts and concealed zip at the bust flowed into a beautiful skirt that pleated over her bump and cascaded away to the floor in a full-length skirt.

“Oh Mama, look at you!” Sybil exclaimed.

“Girls, it fits perfectly. You did good.” She looked at herself in the mirror. The dresses really fitted perfectly and her big bump showed wonderfully. “What is the other outfit you girls bought?

“That is a simple one.” Edith held up a pair of dungarees and a long sleeve t-shirt.

Cora’s face lit up. “Oh, I do love dungarees.”

“Right? So you need to wear one in that photoshoot.” Mary said.

“Do you girls know where we are going?”

All three shook their heads. “Oh and the outfits are a surprise for dad.” Edith said.

+++

The next morning, Robert helped Cora get dressed and made breakfast. “Are you ready for today?” He said while cleaning up the dishes.

Cora stood next to him. “I am, I think.” She frowned for a second. “Where are you taking me?”

Robert turned towards Cora, put his hands on her waist and kissed her cheek. “That is a surprise my darling.” He didn’t notice the look on Cora’s face.

Edith, Sybil and Mary entered the kitchen.

“Girls?” Cora said surprised.

“We are coming with you, to help you get dressed and changed during the shoot.” Sybil said, kissing her mother’s cheek. She put her hand briefly on her mother’s belly, bent down and said: “good morning little one.”

Cora chuckled.

“Everybody ready?” Robert said. “You girls, have my clothes too?”

“We have.” Both Edith and Mary held up their bags.

Robert wanted to walk away, when Cora took his arm. “How long do you think we will be busy?”

“I don’t know. Why?”

Cora stretched her back. “Never mind, come the girls are waiting.”

+++

Robert drove them to Kew Gardens. “We have our shoot in the glasshouse gardens. I rented the place for the day.”

They met up with the photographer and they got changed into their first outfits. When Cora stepped out of her dressing corner in her dungarees, she chuckled when she saw Robert. He was also wearing a dungaree with a long sleeve t-shirt. “Oh my, you look adorable.” She said.

The photographer took a bunch of pictures, and then they changed into their formal wear. Robert was wearing a light blue suit, which complimented the navy blue of Cora’s dress. Cora needed some breaks in between , her back was hurting.

First the photographer took some pictures of just Cora and then he asked Robert to join.

“Turn your backs towards each other.” The photographer said. So Cora turned around, but Robert didn’t. Suddenly he got down on one knee. The girls gasped, which made Cora turn around.

She brought both hands to her mouth in shock. The camera clicked constantly.

Robert took Cora’s hand. “My darling Cora.” He started. In the corner of his eye, he saw Mary had her phone in her hands, and was clearly filming. He scraped his throat.

“I know we have some rough years behind us. But it is time for a fresh start. My love for you has never altered. I adored you from the moment I first laid eyes on you. We found our way back to each other and I want to grow old with you. I am never letting you go. Do you want to marry me?”

“Oh Robert.” Cora was beaming. “I love you, so very, very much. Yes. YES, I want to marry you.” She bent down and kissed him passionately.

Robert got up and pulled Cora closer. They shared a long kiss, until Cora realised they weren’t alone and she broke the connection. Robert brushed a tear of her cheek.

“This was so romantic.” Sybil said, stepping closer.

“Congratulations Mama, Papa.” Edith said.

Mary hugged Cora intensely. “I am happy for you Mama.” She felt her mother stiffen up. “Mama?”

Robert was alerted by Mary’s tone. “Cora?” He asked when he saw her face. “Cora, my darling. What is wrong?”

Cora’s face lost colour. “I think my contractions started.” She held her belly with both hands and breathed in shakily. Mary was holding her shoulders to steady her.

Sybil had a worried look. “Mama, please sit down.” She pulled a chair close and ordered her mother to sit. “We will bring you to the hospital.”

Cora was breathing through a contraction and just nodded.

Robert took Sybil aside. “isn’t this a bit to early. She is only 8 months pregnant.”

Sybil looked at her mother. “It is her 4th time and she is older. It is not strange labour is starting early.

Love isn’t always easy. Chapter 22

“When you think it will help us.” Robert was facing Cora, his hand rested on her belly. He had come to bed late, but Cora had waited for him.

“It can’t hurt to get some help. Most of the time, I don’t even know why I am angry or irritated.” Cora stroke with her fingers in Robert’s neck.

“This little one, is messing with your hormones.” He moved his hand over her belly, searching for a kick.

Cora moved his hand, because he was trying on the wrong side.

“We have to be honest, it isn’t because of hormones. We divorced for a reason.” Cora looked Robert in the eyes.

“Can you believe it when I say, I don’t remember why we fought.”

“That’s the same for me. I remember us fighting, and it’s not the same as the disagreements we have now. But I don’t remember why we were fighting.”

“Let’s hope that counsellor can help us.” He leaned towards Cora, she stretched her neck to answer his kiss. He scooted closer, Cora’s pregnancy pillow was in the way.

Cora pulled it away and managed to press her body against his. “For now, let us enjoy the good moments we have.”

After some time, Robert noticed that Cora was having discomfort. He got up and put the pillow back in between Cora’s leg and supporting her belly. He bent down and kissed her belly. “Your mummy and daddy wil work everything out. Don’t you worry.” He kissed her belly again. Cora put her hand on his head and played with his hair. He looked up into her eyes. He saw the most beautiful blue eyes, beaming with love. He climbed back in bed, kissed her forehead and said goodnight. He felt Cora letting out a deep sigh.

“Did you know, Mama and Dad are having counselling?” Sybil said to Mary.

“No? They didn’t tell me.” Mary said with raised eyebrows. “How do you know?”

“Edith told me.” Sybil answered.

“Why does she know and we don’t.” Mary sounded irritated.

“She heard it from aunt Rosamund.”

“Ugh, she is such a suck up with aunt Rosamund.”

“Mary, that’s not nice.” Sybil exclaimed.

“Maybe, but it is the truth.” Mary got up. “I am going home.”

Sybil had moved in with Tom, when her parents moved to the new house. Robert had said she could stay in her old room and live alone, or move with them to the new home. She decided it was the best time, to move in with Tom. Robert had protested a bit, but couldn’t prevent it.

+++

“So now Cora is dragging you to a therapist?”

“Mama! Stop this. I thought you accepted the situation.” Robert gave his mother an annoyed look.

“And I thought you two were good. But it turns out you two, still can’t stand each other.”

“You are exaggerating. We only want to make sure, we can make it work this time. I never stopped loving her.”

Violet sighed. “You are a fool.”

“For loving Cora?” Robert asked.

“A fool for still not knowing how you ended up in that divorce. I still think you should try it out with Sarah. But you have been foolish and now you are getting a 4th child.”

A smile played around Robert’s lips, when he thought of his Cora being pregnant.

“Why are you smiling? Did I say something funny?” Violet sounded irritated.

“I was thinking of Cora and she makes me smile.” Robert smiled. “What I don’t get, is why you are all of the sudden against us being back together again. During Christmas it seemed, you were enjoying seeing us all together again.”

“Your housing situation makes me worried and now the counselling.”

“We are going to put our houses on the market soon. I think it is safe to say, we will stay together. And yes counselling, because we both want to be together, but we need some help.”

“Everybody needs help these days. Back in my time…..”

“Back in your time.” Robert interrupted. “Were a lot of marriage forced and not happy, but divorce wasn’t an option.”

“I wish Martha was still alive.” Violet said.

“Why? You never liked Cora’s mother?” Robert said surprised.

“But she would be able to get some sense back into Cora’s head. She would listen to her mother.”

“Enough talk about me and Cora. Did the girls tell you about their marriage plans?” Robert tried to change the subject.

+++

Cora was making a simple dinner. They just had their first session, and it was clarifying.

“Thank you for being this open.” She said, half turning around when Robert entered the kitchen.

He openend the wine fridge and took out a bottle. “Do you mind?” He hold up the bottle, with asking eyes.

“No, no, of course not. Can you pour me a grape juice?”

“Is that a different word for wine? Beca than my answer is no. I am not serving you wine.”

Cora chuckled. “No, I mean juice made from grapes. There is a bottle on the bottom.”

“Oooh, now I see it.” Robert said relieved.

Cora had turned the stoof down and walked towards Robert. She leaned against his back. Her hands on his shoulder blades. “I mean it, I am thankful you came to that counsellor.”

Robert turned around and wrapped his arms around Cora’s waist.

She chuckled. “That is getting harder.”

“You are still my beautiful Cora. And as I said before, you are radiant when you are pregnant. Of course I came with you to the counsellor, I want this to work.” He kissed her.

Playfully, Cora pulled back. “What do you want to work?”

Robert pressed his hand in Cora’s back, pressing her firmer against him. “You know what I mean.” He kissed the tip of her nose.

Cora giggled.

“Mama?” Edith’s voice sounded very soft in the kitchen.

Cora stepped back from Robert, alerted by Edith’s tone. “Darling?”

Robert sensed, something was wrong and he left the kitchen with a lame excuse.

Edith stepped towards Cora. “Can you promise you will not get mad?” She said with a small voice.

Cora took her hands in hers. “I don’t know what it is about, but you can tell me.” She said softly, brushing Edith’s cheek.

“Maybe, you should sit down.”

“Now, you are, worrying me. What’s wrong?” Cora sat down on a barstool.

“I am pregnant.” Edith said.

Cora tried not sound to shocked. “What?”

“We used protection but it failed. And now I have a little one growing inside me.”

Cora pulled Edith close and took her in a long embrace. “You are my darling daughter, and I will support you in anything you do in life. Darling, I am not sure, if this is the right word, but: congratulations.”

“Don’t tell Papa, please.”

“Your father can handle, more than you think. But he will not hear it from me.” She brushed a tear away from Edith’s cheek.

Love isn’t always easy. Chapter 21

Cora was laying down on the sofa. It was the second of January and the holidays were finally over. Cora loved the holidays, because she got to spend time with her family and for the first time in 4 years all the days were spent together, but it had worn her out. Robert warned her for it, but she didn’t want to admit it. She had been stubborn and made dinner everyday. Even Violet had said on new years eve that she should slow down. The girls were perfectly able to prepare dinner. But she insisted on cooking, afraid Violet was setting a trap. So she could say: ‘see, Cora is lazy’

She was trying to focus on her book. Before Robert left he made a nice fire. She had just gotten up to put a new log on it, but it had been with difficulty. She was scared for the coming months. She was 6 months pregnant and if she already had trouble moving around, it would only get worse. Finally she gave in and closed her eyes. Only for a second, she said to herself. Holding her book in her hands.

She was woken up by a cold hand on her arm. She opened her eyes and saw the sweet face of Sybil.

“Mama, are you alright?”

“I am just tired. Nothing wrong. What are you doing here?” She stretched her back and rubbed her belly.

“Are you sure?” Sybil checked Cora’s pulse.

Cora smiled at Sybil. “Darling. I am alright, I promise. The holidays have just been busy.”

“When you say so. But please watch yourself.”

Cora cupped Sybil’s cheek. “I will, but you aren’t here to check on me.”

Sybil started beaming. “Tom asked me to marry him.”

Cora sat up. “Oh darling. Congratulations. How wonderful.” She paused. “You did say yes, right?”

Sybil showed her hand. A beautiful shining ring was on her finger.

“I am happy for you darling.”

“Thank you, Mama. We are going to have busy times, with the baby coming soon and Mary’s marriage and now mine “

“This baby needs to wait 3 more months.” Cora winked. “And I can’t wait to go dress shopping with you girls.”

“Maybe, Mary and I can go together on the same day?”

Cora searched for a good response, she knew Edith would get her proposal soon, although she expected that. Mary would never want to go dress shopping with Edith, and it wouldn’t be nice, if she saw her sisters go together, without her. “You girls deserve your own day.”

“You are right, it’s more fun to have our own day.”

“You woke your mother up?” Robert walked into the living room.

“Robert? You are home?” Cora said surprised.

“I am home for a while now, but when I saw you sleeping, I decided to let you sleep and work upstairs.” He walked over and kissed Sybil on her cheek. “Something happened, you are beaming.” He said to Sybil while kissing Cora.

“Tom asked me to marry him.” She said proudly.

Cora saw a haze of disappointment on Robert’s face, but he quickly put a smile on his face. She hoped Sybil hadn’t seen it, who was staring at her ring. Robert pulled Sybil close in a tight embrace. “Congratulations, darling.”

“Now, I am off. Mama take care and take it slow today.” Sybil said while standing up.

“You woke me up from a nap, so I think I am taking it slow.” Cora winked. “Go and enjoy your day with Tom.”

Robert sat down next to Cora, staring into the flames, after he put a new log on it.

Cora took his hand. “Something wrong?” She asked.

Robert let out a deep sigh. “Well, I am still not sure Tom is the right man for our Sybil. He is just a simple mechanic. I had hoped for more for her.”

Cora squeezed Robert’s hand. “What is more important? The man we think is right for Sybil or the man she thinks is right for her?”

Robert abruptly got up. “I will go back to my office, if you turn against me.” And he walked off.

Cora sighed, why didn’t Robert want to accept Tom as his son in law. He gave him permission to marry Sybil. She decided to go up to her atelier, there was a new order waiting for her to paint.

+++

A couple of days later, Rosamund had invited Cora over for lunch. Marmaduke was gone on a business trip and Rosamund wanted a girls only lunch. She had made a simple lunch at home, just a couple of sandwiches.

“Thank you for staying in.” Cora said, walking towards the kitchen with the plates.

“You needed to be out of the house, but without the need to dress up.” Rosamund answered

Cora stopped and turned around. “Did you talk with Robert?”

Rosamund shook her head. “No, it was Edith.”

Cora sighed. Yesterday Edith had come for dinner with Bertie. Cora had been irritated by Robert’s behaviour over the last days and Robert was annoyed by the fact that Cora was happy with Sybil’s upcoming marriage. “What did she say?”

Rosamund took the plates out of Cora’s hands and walked into the kitchen, where Cora sat down on one of the barstools. “She is worried about you.”

“Me? Why?”

“She says you look tired.” She paused for a second and looked at Cora. “If you ask me, you indeed do look tired. And that you and Robert are fighting again.”

Cora rubbed her belly. “I am only 6 months pregnant, but it feels like 9.” She sighed. “And Robert and I aren’t really fighting, we just don’t agree.”

“Isn’t that the same?”

Cora shrugged her shoulders.

“Why don’t you and Robert talk with a marriage counselor?”

Cora frowned.

“I mean it.” Rosamund said, putting her hand on Cora’s arm. “There is something wrong with your communication. You two clearly love each other very much, but there is something in between.”

Cora let out a deep sigh. “I don’t know, why can’t we just talk like normal couples. Look at you and Marmaduke, you act like you met yesterday. Still after all these years of marriage.”

“You never looked at yourself and Robert? When you wouldn’t know better you two look like newlyweds.”

Cora coloured. “I will talk with Robert tonight about it. Maybe you are right. Although I don’t know where to find time with all these marriages coming up.”

Rosamund loaded the dishwasher. “We only are waiting on Bertie, to finally ask Edith. Oh she wants it so bad, just like her sisters.”

Cora chuckled. “Honestly, you know more about Edith than I do.”

“You know we have a special bond.” Rosamund said apologetically.

Cora got up and stood next to her leaning into her sister-in-law. “I didn’t mean it in a bad way. I am happy Edith has someone she can trust like this. I prefer that person to be you, than a total stranger.”

Rosamund gave her a warm smile.

Love isn’t always easy. Chapter 20

Cora was moving boxes from one room to another. She wanted to decorate the living room, but she got overwhelmed with all the boxes around her. She decided to put them in the right place first.

“Mary, can you go and help your mother and please let her stop lifting those heavy boxes.” Robert said.

Cora overheard him and abruptly turned around, with a box in her arms. Her belly was slightly in the way, but she managed still. “If you have something to say, you can say it directly to me!” She sneered.

“As if you would listen to me.”

“Robert, I told you before. Let me decide if I can do something or not. And if you want to celebrate Christmas in three days, you need to let me do this.”

“If you keep going at this pace, we will not celebrate anything, because you will be done in, by the time it is Christmas.”

“You could also just lift up a box and help me, but no! You are too busy working. Just go back to your office!” Cora said angrily.

“If you two keep fighting, we will indeed not celebrate Christmas. Please, can you two stop this. The joy of you being back together evaporates quickly this way.”

Cora let out a deep sigh and put down the box. “You are right. Sorry.” She looked at Robert, who was still visibly upset with her. “Mary, can you bring this box to my atelier?”

“What room is that?” Mary asked.

“Second floor, third door on your right.” She touched Mary’s arm. “Thank you.” And she stepped closer to Robert.

He had an angry look in his eyes. “You are selfish, you know that!” He said.

“Selfish?” She had moved her hand to touch his arm, but she pulled back. “What do you mean?”

“You only think about what you want and need. But you forget to think about what I need. And I need you to take better care of yourself. You are carrying our child and I can’t bear it if anything happens.”

Cora looked Robert in the eye and saw pain. “Robert?” She said softly. “What are you afraid of?”

Robert swallowed visibly. His gaze went down.

Cora took his hand and pressed it on her belly. “Our little one is safe.” She felt the baby move and moved Robert’s hand. “You feel it?”

Robert nodded.

“I am sorry. I will stop carrying boxes, if you promise me to stop working during Christmas.”

“You’re blackmailing me.” Robert tried to pull his hand back, but Cora didn’t let go.

She got on the tip of her toes and kissed Robert. “Let’s stop fighting. I promise you, I will not lift another box.”

Robert put his hand on Cora’s back and pulled her close. He kissed her. “We can do better things.” He touched her ear with the tip of his tongue. It sends shivers down Cora’s back.

“Tonight, I am yours.” She pressed her bump into him.

Robert chuckled.

“Did I say something funny?” Cora leaned back.

“No, definitely not. I can’t wait for tonight. I just find it funny that you try to press your body against mine, and the only thing I can feel is your bump.” He kissed her again.

“Please, get a room.” Mary’s voice sounded through the living room. “Where does this box need to go?” She asked, holding up another box.

“Sorry, darling. That one needs to be in the kitchen.” She touched Robert’s arm and followed Mary.

Everybody was sitting around the large dinner table. All the men on one side and the woman on the other. Violet was sitting at the head, Cora knew how much she loved that.

“I am going to ask you to come over and cook for me.” Marmaduke set, dabbing his mouth with his napkin.

“You don’t like my cooking?” Rosamund said, semi-indignant.

Marmaduke smiled at her. Cora could see how much he loved his wife. “You know I do. But it would be nice if you had an evening off and we could still enjoy a very well-cooked meal.”

“That is a lame excuse, and you know that.” Robert chimed in.

They sat at the table for the rest of the evening, joking around. Everybody was smiling and enjoying themselves. Cora looked around the table and she felt very blessed. She was back with the love of her life, carrying another one of his children. Her daughters were happy with their boyfriends and jobs. And Marmaduke and Rosamund were still on cloud nine together.

+++

Robert brought Violet back home. Rosamund had offered to do it, but Robert insisted he should do it. Cora didn’t mind, she could use some rest. She had stood on her feet the whole day to prepare dinner. She made Beef Wellington, but for 11 people, that was a lot of work. Her feet and ankles were swollen. Before Robert left, he had lit up the fireplace and Cora was sitting on one of the big armchairs in front of it.

Mary entered the room with deep red cheeks. “Mary? Is everything alright? I thought you went home?” Cora wanted to get up, but Mary put her hand on her shoulder.

“Please, stay seated Mama! There is nothing wrong, in fact, the opposite.” Mary sat down on the armrest of Cora’s chair.

Cora took her hand in hers. “Do you want to tell me what happened?”

Mary didn’t say anything, she only wiggled with her fingers. It took some time before Cora saw it. She gasped.

“Oh my, is it truly? Did he?”

“Yes, Mama. He did.” Mary said with the widest smile on her face. “And I said yes.”

“Come here darling. ” Cora wrapped both arms around her. “Congratulations, does your father know? And where is Matthew?”

“I am here.” Matthew stepped inside. He had been waiting in the hallway.

“Matthew come here.” Cora said and she pulled him close to give him a hug. “Congratulations.”

“What are we celebrating, besides Christmas?” Robert said, walking towards them three.

Mary put out her hand for Robert to see her ring, but Robert didn’t see the ring.

“Darling, Mary had some news.” Cora said.

Love isn’t always easy. Chapter 19

Robert walked upstairsto their bedroom with a cup of tea in his hands. Cora was still in bed, she had worked on a painting until late in the night. He had tried to get her to bed earlier, but she was all caught up in her creative process. But now it was time for her to wake up.

He sat down on her side of the bed, put the teacup down and softly touched her hand. “Cora? It is time to wake up.”

Cora moaned. “Please let me sleep, I need more sleep.”

Robert stroked his finger over her cheek. “I know you want to sleep, but you really need to wake up. It’s a special day today.”

Cora opened her eyes and looked at him in confusion. “What am I forgetting?”

Robert chuckled. Now he wasn’t the one who forgot. “You have your scan today. To see how our little one is growing.”

Cora jerked up. “Oh no, how could I forget. What time is it.”

Calmly Robert laid his hand on Cora’s arm. “Calm down, we still have two hours before we need to leave.

Cora took in a deep breath and placed her hand on her belly. “Thank you for remembering and waking me. I will take a shower.”

“I will have breakfast ready when you come down.” Robert said.

Cora leaned forward and kissed him. “You are a treasure.”

+++

Robert was looking at the scan, he and Cora were sitting in a nearby pub. The baby was growing steadily, and everything was alright. Normally this would be the last scan, but because of Cora’s age, she would get regular check ups and if needed more scans. “Look at that little nose.” He said. “It’s definitely your nose.”

Cora chuckled. “You can’t possibly tell that from this picture. But I love you for saying it.”

Robert looked at her, intense. “Do you really mean that?”

“I never stopped loving you. We had our difficulties, but my love for you has always been there.” She took his hand. “We still need to learn to communicate better.”

Robert sighed. “I still don’t know where we went wrong.”

“Is that important?” Cora asked, still holding Robert’s hand.

He was staring out of the window, absentmindedly stroking his thumb over Cora’s hand. She knew he wasn’t going to answer. His mind was already somewhere else. “What are you thinking off?” She asked.

He shook up. “We could go shopping for a baby room this afternoon.” He said.

Cora chuckled. “That is an excellent idea.”

+++

“Aunt Rosamund?” Edith asked. “Why did you and Uncle Marmaduke never had children?”

Rosamund looked up from her desk. She was helping Edith with an article about luxury homes in London. At first, she had asked why Edith didn’t ask her father, but when Edith had insisted, she gave in.

“We never were blessed to receive children.” Rosamund said with a light blush on her cheeks.

Edith realised what a delicate question she had asked. “I am sorry, I should not have asked.”

Rosamund smiled at her. “That’s alright. I understand that it is a topic that is on your mind right now. And I have you and your sisters. When your mother was pregnant with you, she involved me with everything. I had just found out, Marmaduke and I would never have children of our own. It was a blessing I got the chance to be part of your process. And then when you were born, I was the first to give you a bottle, once your mother decided it was time to stop breastfeeding. I can’t thank your father, my dear brother, enough for giving me that chance.”

“Why? It was my mother who stopped breastfeeding?” Edith asked.

“But normally it is the father who will give the first bottle and your father gave that first bottle in my hands. I remember that day, like yesterday. You were so small and content in my arms.” Rosamund looked at Edith with so much love in her eyes.

Edith got up and hugged her and. “We are blessed with you as our aunt.

+++

“What about this?” Robert pointed at a pink coloured corner.

Cora had trouble not to burst out laughing. “You think we are having another girl?” She rested her hand on her belly.

Robert stepped closer to Cora and put his hand on her belly. “I am not good at making boys, so yeah I believe this is a girl and we can always try another time.” His hand moved down her belly to her intimate part.

Cora grabbed his hand and stopped his movement. “I am not doing this again! Stop touching me inappropriately in public.”

Robert smirked, he felt like a young schoolboy on an outing with his girlfriend. His hand moved to her bum. “But I love touching you and you look so beautiful pregnant.”

Cora chuckled but didn’t answer him. She walked further into the store. “Robert, I would love to have this chair.” She was standing next to a rocking chair. “I always wanted a rocking chair. Imagine sitting down for the midnight feeding and rocking in this chair.”

Finally, they found everything they wanted, Cora had to use the bathroom and Robert would pay at the register. Back at home Cora unpacked the things they already brought with them. Some stuffed animals and a baby monitor. At the bottom of the bag there was an item she didn’t recognise.

Robert was looking at her from a distance, he pretended to be working.

Cora held up a pair of dungarees. Robert saw an instant smile on her face, and he got closer. “I know how much you love your dungarees, and I noticed you can’t fit in the ones you have at the moment, anymore.”

“You bought me maternity dungarees?”

“You like it?”

“I love it. Now I can be comfy again.”

“It may be a little bit too big right now, but you will grow into them.”

“This is the only time you can say something like this to a woman.” She winked at Robert. Who lost the colour in his face.

“I didn’t mean anything with it.” He stuttered.

Quickly Cora put her hand on his cheek. “Don’t worry, I can’t wait to grow into them.” She winked again. “Now go back to your work. I kept you from it the whole day.

Love isn’t always easy. Chapter 18

It had started raining again, Robert popped his umbrella open and held it over Cora’s head. She leaned into him, so they could both stand under it. It was pouring down the whole day. She felt Robert’s shoulder pressing into hers. For a minute she closed her eyes and enjoyed this moment. Just the two of them) on the street, underneath an umbrella. The sound of the rain had a calming effect on her.

“Cora? Are you coming?” Robert tried to get her attention. They were standing in front of a Victorian villa.

“Sorry, yes of course. She got a firmer grip on his arm and followed him inside. Steps led them into the grand entrance with pillars. The house had 6 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. 4 reception rooms, a spacious kitchen, study and a wine cellar. Cora instantly fell in love with the place.

“I would love to show you the garden, but it’s better to stay inside.” Robert said. He had this house on his listing but wasn’t planning on publishing it. He knew the moment he stepped inside that Cora would love this place. There were enough rooms, for all the girls to have a room. Although they didn’t need that, Cora insisted on a home where they could always come home.

“I can see the garden through the window. What a wonderful place this is. And I love the neighbourhood, are you sure you want to live here?”

Robert stepped next to her and also stared outside. “Hammersmith and Chiswick are right across the river and Hammersmith bridge is a 3 minute walk. I can get used to living here in Barnes. This house breaths cosiness.” He leaned into Cora.

She leaned back. “Our little one, can grow up in peace here. Do you think we can get it?”

“I am the real estate agent, who is selling this place, so I think we will not have many competitors.” He chuckled.

“Dad? The owners of that house in Barnes are on the line, should I put them through?” Mary asked her father.

Robert’s heart started racing. “Yes, please.”

After a while he stepped into Mary’s office with a big smile on his face. “We got the home.”

“What do you mean?” Mary said surprised.

“I need to tell your mother. Will I see you tonight for dinner?”

“I am not sure, I have to discuss it with Matthew. Maybe he has other plans.” Mary looked down at her desk.

“Your mother would love it, if you came for dinner. Your sisters will be there too.” Robert said, while putting on his jacket. He didn’t hear Mary’s comment.

“Cora?” Robert called out, stepping inside his home. It was strange, calling for her again in this house. He knew it was only temporarily, and that was a good thing. He noticed Cora was on edge in this house. Probably too many memories.

In the back of the house, he heard an answer. He turned one of the unused rooms into her atelier for the time being. It wasn’t ideal, but better than nothing.

“I knew I would find you here.” Cora was sitting on a barstool in front of a painting. She was wearing her dungarees, it barely fit her around her waist. Her belly was growing fast, although she was only close to 5 months, her belly was clearly visible. He stepped closer and wrapped his arms around her, his hands on her belly.

Cora turned her head and smiled at him. She moved one of his hands and he felt a kick immediately. He kissed her cheek. “There is no better feeling in the world, than this.”

“You are home early.” Cora said while leaning into his upper body.

Robert brushed a curl out of her face. “I have some news about the home.” He tried to keep a neutral expression, but he failed.

Cora jumped up. “Did we get it? Really?”

Robert took her hands in his. “We did, they accepted our offer. We will get the keys in three weeks.”

“Three weeks? That’s pretty fast, how did you manage that?”

Robert smiled. “I didn’t have to do anything for it. The current owners, were already moved out. We can put our houses on the market.”

Cora pulled her hands back. “I am not sure if we should do that already.” She lowered her eyes.

“Why not? Are you afraid it will not work out? Why are we buying a new house then?”

“Robert, I….” Cora didn’t know why she was scared all of the sudden. “Maybe we are moving too fast.”

“Cora, we have not much choice. There is a little one growing, who we need to offer a home.” He touched her belly.

Cora stepped back, out of his reach. “I know, it’s just…… never mind, I have to start dinner, the girls are coming soon.”

Cora avoided Robert’s eyes during dinner. She knew the girls would notice something was off. She felt guilty, it was the first dinner with all of them as a family again, and here she was not talking to Robert. Again.

“So, we are back at the start?” Mary said all of a sudden, looking at her mother and father.

“Mary.” Sybil said softly. “Don’t stir.”

“I am not stirring. They are acting like little children., I bet Mama is angry about something Papa has said. Like always. It’s always Dad’s fault. Right? MAMA!”

Cora looked at her with big eyes. Her hand moved to her belly.

“Don’t act innocent. You and Dad are fighting again. Oh, and we know you are pregnant Mama! You don’t have to remind us!” Mary pushed her chair back and rushed out of the dining area. Leaving everybody stunned.

“Should I follow her?” Cora looked at Robert. “I am not sure if she wants me.” She was fighting against her tears.

Robert got up, he put his hand on Cora’s shoulder. “Better not. I will go and talk to her.” He bent down and kissed her cheek. “Don’t worry.” He looked at Edith and Sybil. “And you girls don’t worry about your mother and me, there is nothing wrong.”

The moment he left the room, Sybil got up and sat down next to Cora, taking her hand. “Mama, is everything alright?”

Cora felt a tear running down her cheek. She smiled at Sybil. “I am darling.”

“Are you and Papa fighting?” Edith asked, sitting down on Cora’s other side.

Cora placed her hand on Edith’s. “We are not. We are only figuring out how we are going to make it work. A lot has happened, but your father and I will figure it out. We have a new addition to our family to take care of.” She paused and looked at both her girls. Soon they would have children of their own, but they would always be her little girls. “Did you see the new house already?”

“Papa, only told us, that you visited a place.” Sybil said.

Cora opened her phone. “We got the confirmation today, it is ours. You girls can have your own room. Here…” she handed her phone to Edith. “Take a look. I will check on your father and Mary.”

Cora found Robert and Mary on the veranda. She heard their conversation. “Mama never thinks about anybody else, other than herself.”

“That’s not true, and you know that.” Robert answered.

Cora wasn’t sure if she should interrupt.

“You see a different Mama, than I do.”

“I think you aren’t being fair right now. Your mother loves you very much and would do anything for you. Why don’t you tell her what is bothering you?

“She wouldn’t care.”

Cora decided it was best to make her presence known. She purposely made noise entering the veranda.

She startled Mary, who gave her a hostile look. She saw a relieved look on Robert’s face. “I couldn’t help, overhearing your last words, darling.” She lowered herself in front of Mary, who turned her face away.

“Darling. I know you didn’t want me to know, but your father told me about your struggles.”

Abruptly Mary turned around to Robert, but before she could speak, Cora said:

“It’s not your father’s fault. I asked him.” She took Mary’s hand in hers. “Did you know how much trouble your father and I had when we were trying for Sybil? First, we had the miscarriage, and then it seemed, I couldn’t get pregnant anymore. The moment we stopped and accepted we would never have a third child, there she was, I fell pregnant with Sybil. Did you and Matthew see a doctor?”

Mary’s cheeks coloured. Very softly she said no.

Cora looked at Robert, who got the hint and quietly left them alone. Cora got up and sat down on the sofa next to Mary. “There can be a very simple solution for you not being pregnant. It can be anything.”

“Aren’t you angry that we are trying, before we are married?” Mary asked.

“Why would I? Oh sweetheart, of course I am not. Come here.” She wrapped her arm around her shoulder. “You will get your little one, just wait and see.”

Very softly Mary put her hand on Cora’s belly. “Can you feel the baby already?”

“The baby is very quiet in the evening but place your hand here.” She took her hand and laid it on the side of her belly. “Press a little bit harder.” She said

“There, I felt it.” Mary had a surprised look on her face. “I am sorry Mama, I had no right to be this angry with you.”

Cora’s hand moved from Mary’s shoulder to her head, she laid her head down on her mother’s shoulder. “Everything is alright. I understand.” Cora said.
