Haunted Downton.

Cora woke up in the middle of the night. She heard Robert’s soft snores. The fire had gone out. Why did she wake up?

Carefully, not to wake Robert up, she got up to use the bathroom. There was a cold draft, she checked the windows but they were closed. She didn’t know where the draft was coming from.

Back in the room, she put a new block of wood in the fireplace and tried to light the fire again. She managed to get some coals to light up again, and small flames were forming. Another draft blew out the small flames.

Something touched the back of Cora’s neck. She quickly turned around, but no one was there. Robert was still covered under the blankets. She shook her head and turned to the fire again. She blew some more into the fireplace and finally the flames got grip and the piece of wood caught fire.

Slowly she got up and walked back to the bed. She got chills all over. She wrapped her nightgown a little tighter around her body. Robert moved in his sleep and said something, but Cora couldn’t understand, it was more like a mumble.

She sat down on her side of the bed, kicked off her slippers and put her feet under the blankets. She turned towards Robert and pressed her feet against Robert’s calves. He let out a low rumble, Cora chuckled, Robert said he hated it when she did this. But she knew secretly he just loved this form of affection. She pressed her body against Robert’s back. She felt strange, as if they weren’t alone in the room.

She slid her hand over Robert’s chest, his hand covered hers. Feeling Robert’s steady heartbeat made her drift off again. Before she realized it, Cora was back asleep.

A hand grabbed her ankle and she let out a scream, at the same time the blankets were pulled off of her. Robert woke up from her screaming.

“Cora?” He said groggy.

“There….. there is someone in the room.” She stuttered, pulling her legs up to her chest.

“What?” Robert turned around and lit the candle on his bedside table. He got out of bed and checked the room. “Nobody is in the room dear.” He crawled back into bed, leaned towards Cora and kissed her temple. “You must have had a bad dream.” He laid down on his pillow and was asleep as soon as he closed his eyes.

Cora shivered, she was sure it wasn’t a dream. She felt that cold draft again, quickly she got under the blankets. She kept her legs pulled up and wrapped her arms around them. Curled up into a ball she finally fell asleep again.

“Is Mama not coming down today?” Sybil asked Robert when she entered the library, where he was working.

Robert looked up and smiled at his youngest. She was always so caring. “You mother had a bad night, why don’t you go up and check if she is ready?” Softly he touched her hand.

Sybil hopped out of the room, when Mary entered. “Don’t hop, Sybil, that isn’t ladylike.”

“Papa, Mama promised to go to the village today to buy a new dress. Can I go on my own?”

Robert turned around. Mary was growing into a real lady with her 21 years. “You will wait for your Mama.” He heard snorting coming from the doorway. He looked and saw Edith standing there. “Don’t laugh at your sister.” He corrected her.

He saw a shadow behind Edith, he had already recognised the footsteps. The small but quick steps could only be from his wife. And soon she stepped inside the library, with Sybil in her heels.

Robert got up and walked towards her, kissed her cheek and whispered. “Did you get some more sleep?”

Cora nodded and briefly touched his elbow. “Mary, are you ready? Edith?”

“Is Edith coming too?” Mary whined.

Robert saw Cora straighten her back a bit more. She always had the perfect posture, but when she got irritated she got even straighter. “All three of your girls are coming, or we aren’t going at all.” She turned around and walked out.

Robert saw O’Brien come closer and handed Cora her coat. He also saw her whisper something in Cora’s ear and he saw her tremble. He wondered what O’Brien told her, that made Cora insecure. He saw it on her face, it was a brief second, but it was clearly there.

+++

“Robert? Are you awake?” Cora was turned towards Robert in their bed. She had asked Daisy to put extra wood on the fire and put several candles around the room.

Robert made a low noise. Cora loved those sounds, they stirred something deep inside her. She put her hand on Robert’s arm.

“O’brien told me.”

Robert sighed. “That woman only tells lies, go to sleep, you had a long day with the girls.”

She felt Robert’s lips on her forehead. “Please, listen to me.” She said, but Robert was already sleeping. She let out a deep sigh, how could she sleep after O’Brien’s story.

She felt that draft again and got scared. She pressed herself against Robert and hoped nothing was going to happen. She closed her eyes.

“Wake up.” A chilling voice said. Cora’s eyes shot open and she saw a woman standing at the footboard. She pulled up the covers to her chin.

“What do you want?” Cora said with a shaking voice.

“Darling, what are you saying?” Robert sat up and looked at Cora. “You look like you have seen a ghost?” He touched her forehead. “Are you alright?”

Cora buried her face in Robert’s chest. “I think I am going mad.” She sobbed.

He brushed her back and tried to calm her down. He decided to have a talk with O’Brien in the morning. It seemed like that woman was feeding Cora with scary stories. It was that time of the year again. In America it was tradition to celebrate Halloween and here in the UK they celebrated Samhain on the 31th of October. The belief that ghosts came back to haunt the living was something that made Robert chuckle. But clearly, Cora believed the stories that Sarah was telling her.

Is this love? Chapter 32

“Why haven’t I seen Cora in weeks?” Rosamund asked while pouring in the tea.

Robert took the cup from her and shrugged his shoulders. “How is Marmaduke doing?”

Rosamund’s face clouded. Marmaduke was in a lot of pain recently and the doctors couldn’t find the problem. It scared Rosamund to the bone.

Robert pulled her close. “He will be alright, they will find what is wrong with him.” He said.

“What if it is…….”

“No, don’t say that. We have to keep positive.” Robert cupped her cheek.

“I am too young to be a widow. We still have so many plans.”

Robert didn’t know what to answer, he was also worried about Marmaduke’s health. He held Rosamund a little longer to his chest and then let her go. “What is your opinion about the hospital?” He asked, changing the subject.

Rosamund shook her head. “I don’t know. Mama can’t expect you to give up your restaurant.”

“It looks like she is expecting that. For now John is managing the restaurant. But I don’t want to give up on my dream.”

“What does Cora say about it?” Rosamund asked.

“Does it matter what she thinks? He has nothing to do with this.” Robert said annoyed.

Rosamund raised her eyebrows, I thought you two were in a relationship?”

Rosamund looked at Robert, who shrugged his shoulders again. Why wasn’t he talking about Cora? What happened?

+++

Andrew walked towards Cora’s desk. She behaved differently these last weeks and he was worried. He pulled up a chair and sat next to her.

When Cora finally looked up from her work and acknowledged him he said. “I know I am only your boss, but I am worried about you.” He put his hand on Cora’s arm.

Cora felt tears stinging in her eyes, but she managed to control them. “There is nothing you should be worried about. I finish all my work on time.”

“You know I am not talking about your work!” Andrew said with a frown.

Cora swallowed and looked down at her hands. She let them rest in her lap. “Anthony isn’t back in my life. He is in a mental health hospital right now.”

“And Robert?” Andrew knew perfectly well there was something wrong between them. She wasn’t talking about him anymore.

“He is busy, as I am. He helped me and I am grateful for that, but now we both need to go on with our own lives.” Cora tried to believe her own words. She missed Robert, she didn’t know what she did wrong, but he was so distant. She gave up trying to get him to open up. She hadn’t been at his house since that morning she danced with him in his kitchen.

Andrew looked at her. “You know where to find me if you need anything.” He got up and walked out of her office. The same second Rosamund walked in.

“Rosamund?” Cora’s voice got a higher pitch out of surprise.

“I miss you and if it is up to Robert and yourself, we will never see each other again.” Rosamund said, closing the door behind her.

Cora coloured, she knew Rosamund was right and she missed her too.

“What happened between you and Robert? Robert doesn’t want to tell me.”

“I can’t tell you.” Cora started.

“Come on Cora. You know you can trust me.” Rosamund interrupted.

“It is not that.” Cora lowered her eyes. “I don’t know what happened. Robert changed after your father’s death and after the evening when Anthony broke into his home, he has been distant. He doesn’t respond to my calls or messages. I gave up trying.”

“My brother is so incredibly stupid sometimes. I think I know what is happening.”

Cora sat up a bit straighter. “You do?” She said hopeful. She desperately wanted to know why Robert was pushing her away.

“He is listening to mother and he is stressed out by the hospital duties he has now.”

Cora sighed. “Your mother doesn’t like me.”

“Mother likes nobody.”

“She liked Judith.” Cora said with a soft voice.

“Judith is the daughter of one of her best friends. Of course she likes her, she could control that woman. She can’t control you.”

Cora blushed, Violet would indeed not be able to control her. “What do you want me to do? Robert isn’t answering any of my attempts to get in contact.”

“You booked that Whiskey tasting for next week right?”

“For his birthday indeed.”

“What if I take him there and you will be waiting inside?”

“He will walk out, I just know he will. No, you can go with him, but I will not be there.”

Rosamund sighed. “Maybe you are right, he will probably not stay.”

“Why don’t I give the reservation to Marmaduke, he can take Robert there. I bet Marmaduke also likes Whiskey.”

Rosamund’s face clouded for a second. “He does.” She said softly.

Cora put her hand on Rosamund’s arm. “Is there something wrong?” She saw the clouds on Rosamund’s face, and although she only knew her for a couple of months now, she felt something was troubling her.

“Marmaduke might be sick.” Rosamund said with a voice full of tears.

“What?” Cora saw tears running over Rosamund’s cheeks. She pulled her close and held her firm until her crying settled down.

“The doctor’s don’t know what is wrong, but I just know it is something bad. Something really bad.”

“Try to stay positive. As long as the doctor’s aren’t worried.”

Rosamund interrupted. “That is the thing, they are worried. I can see it on their faces, but they can’t find what is wrong. And I can see Marmaduke getting worse everyday. He doesn’t have an appetite and is tired all the time.”

“I am truly sorry to hear this. You shouldn’t be here, trying to get Robert and me back together. You should be with Marmaduke.”

“He doesn’t need my worrying surrounding him the whole day and I can use some things to keep my mind distracted.” Rosamund winked.

Is this love? Chapter 31

Another night at the police station.” Cora sighed. “I am sorry to drag you into this again.”

Robert squeezed Cora’s hand. “Anthony is the one dragging me into this, by breaking into my home.”

Cora sighed again, Robert wrapped his arm around her shoulders. “Don’t you worry, they have him now and he will be locked up. I am sure of that. Right sergeant?” Robert looked up at the sergeant sitting opposite of them.

She nodded. “He will indeed be locked up. He crossed all the borders.” She looked at Cora. “Are you sure you are alright?”

“I am. He didn’t come near me. I am more worried about Carson.”

“Your bodyguard will be fine. He has some cuts, from the glass Anthony was waving with, but that’s all.” Now she looked at Robert. “Your window will be fixed tonight, so you can sleep in your own home.”

“I am not sure how much sleep we will get after all this.”

“Well, you both should try it.” She got up and walked out.

“We should go home.” Cora said with a small voice.

Robert got up and helped Cora in her jacket. She hooked her arm in his and they walked out. “Can we walk back home?” Cora asked.

Robert looked at her in surprise. “That is a 30 minute walk.”

“I know, but hopefully it will clear my head.”

Robert pulled her close and kissed her temple. “We will walk home.”

+++

Robert didn’t sleep long, there wasn’t much time for sleep. The hospital was soaking up all his time and he couldn’t ask John to take over the restaurant, no, he didn’t want that. It was his dream, and he didn’t want to give it up.

He turned on some music. Le Cygne – Camille Saint-Saëns and he tried to focus on the numbers in front of him. From time to time biting into his toast.

Suddenly he felt Cora’s hand on his arm. She took his hand and pulled him off his chair. He tried to protest, but Cora didn’t listen to it. She put one hand on his shoulder and the other she held up his hand. She started to move on the music, it was a slow waltz. While they were dancing Robert felt his body relax and even his mind was relaxing. Cora was wearing one of her silk bathrobes, he felt the fabric under his fingers. Slowly he moved them over her back.

Cora stepped closer and laid her head on his shoulder, in the meantime, still moving with the music. The music and her touches had a magical effect on him.

When the music stopped, Cora didn’t let go and waited for the next song to start. It was Capriol Suite: 5. Pieds-en-l’air – Peter Warlock. Although Robert loved dancing with her, he pushed Cora back.

She looked at him in confusion. “Darling?” She asked.

“I don’t have time. I need to work, stop distracting me.” He turned around and went back to his chair.

Cora sighed, Robert did this a lot since his father had died and she felt a little victory when he danced with her. But it was for a short period of time. She looked at his plate and saw he was eating dry toast. She decided to make a proper breakfast.

She put the plate next to Robert and went back upstairs to change, she also needed to start her working day. Although with the amount of sleep she got it would be a long and hard day.

Once she was ready, she walked back into the kitchen, where Robert was still bent over his laptop. To her relief, she saw his plate was now empty. She put it in the dishwasher and kissed his cheek. “I am off, do I see you tonight?”

Robert’s only answer was a deep hummmm.

+++

The day had indeed been long and hard, and not only because of her lack of sleep. She had texted Robert, but didn’t get a response. It bothered her and she decided to sleep in her own home.

Anthony was locked up, so she would be safe. Carson had been dismissed and thanked for his services.

She stepped inside her own home and it felt strange. She hadn’t been alone here for a long time. Even though Anthony hadn’t been there for a while she still could smell his eau de toilette. It was always DIOR Sauvage. She was happy Robert used a different one. She felt strange thinking of him. Since Patrick’s death something had changed between them and after Anthony’s burglary he was distant.

She wished he would talk with her, she could help him. He didn’t know, but her studies had been in Management. She only recently changed to working in designing. If only he would open up, she could tell him. There was definitely a solution to his problems.

+++

Robert stretched his back, he put his hands on his neck and stretched even more. He had a headache, with his fingertips he massaged his forehead, hoping to get some relief. He wished Cora had come to his house, she could work wonders with her fingers. But he knew perfectly well why she didn’t come to his house. He had ignored her all day. And not only today, he was doing this for a couple of weeks.

It was just that he didn’t want to drag her into their family problems. It wasn’t any of her business how he should run the hospital and his restaurant. At the same time he didn’t want his mother’s wretch over him. She had made it perfectly clear she didn’t want Cora in the family and maybe, he should listen to her.

Parents know best, was the saying, right?

He turned down the lights and went upstairs, hopefully he would sleep tonight. Deep down he knew better, he would worry the whole night about what he needed to do.

Is this love? Chapter 30

It was a rainy autumn day. Cora was sitting in Rosamund’s living room. The fireplace was lit and it gave a nice glow in the room. She and Rosamund had just come back from a long walk and now they needed to warm up.

Cora took a sip of her tea. “I need your help with Robert’s present.”

“He is not that difficult. He likes a lot.” Rosamund answered.

“That doesn’t help me much. I don’t want to give him a boring gift.” Cora frowned.

“And what do you consider to be a boring gift?”

“Chocolates for example, or whiskey.”

“Darling Cora.” Rosamund chuckled. “You really need to learn a lot!”

“Why?” Cora sat up and tucked the blanket in around her legs.

“Whiskey is never a boring gift. There are so many varieties. And Robert loves a good Whiskey.”

“Maybe, I can take him to a Whiskey tasting?” Cora’s eyes lit up.

“Now, that’s a good idea.” Rosamund got up. “Are you staying for dinner?”

“Is Marmaduke alright with that?” Cora asked unsure.

“If he wouldn’t be, that would be his problem. But no he doesn’t mind, he already adores you.”

Cora’s cheeks coloured. “He doesn’t even know me.”

“He knows you well enough and he feels things like that very fast. He knows when somebody can be trusted. He will also explain to you the situation with Downton and the hospital.”

Cora sighed. “That would be amazing, because Robert doesn’t want to talk about it. He is shutting me out as soon as I mention Downton. He doesn’t even want to explain how the nobility works.” She turned around and saw Carson in the hallway. He had walked with them, on a polite distance, but close enough to step in, if something happened. Cora felt at ease with him nearby. The only time Carson had time off, was when she was together with Robert. She hadn’t heard or seen Anthony, but she couldn’t believe he had given up.

“What’s on your mind?” Rosamund touched her arm.

Cora shook her head to come back to earth. “I was thinking of Anthony and how happy I am with Carson to protect me.”

“Is he still bothering you?” Rosamund’s grip on her arm got tighter.

“No, no. I haven’t seen him since Robert sent him away.”

“Good. Just be careful. I don’t want to lose you as my sister-in-law. Better yet, I don’t want to lose you as my friend.”

Cora wrapped both arms around her. “Thank you, you are my first real friend in this city.”

+++

“I am sorry Carson, I made it very late.” Cora said while hooking her arm in his.

“That’s alright. But maybe we better go by cab back home?” Carson said with a frown.

Cora looked up, instantly worried. “Why, what is wrong?”

Carson didn’t say a thing, but kept looking around.

Cora got chills all over her body. “Carson? Can you please tell me what is wrong?”

“Anthony was spotted around your house tonight.”

Cora grabbed Carson’s arm a bit firmer. “And where is he now?”

“We don’t know, that’s why I don’t want to walk. We need to get you home as soon as possible.”

“Should I go home? Isn’t it safer if I go somewhere else?”

“We don’t know if Anthony knows Robert’s address. But you could sleep there. I will stay with you until he is home.”

+++

Cora had gone up, the restaurant was fully booked and normally that meant Robert wouldn’t be home early. Carson was downstairs waiting on Robert. Cora needed to be at the office in the morning, so she decided to go to bed. Hopefully she would fall asleep. Knowing Anthony was searching for her again made her anxious.

‘No, please leave him alone. It is me you want.’ Cora stepped in front of Robert. Anthony pushed her aside. She fell hard on the ground.

‘He is the one who is keeping you away from me!’ Anthony growled. But don’t worry you are next.’ He hit Robert on his head and she saw him fall to the ground.

‘Robert!’ Cora exclaimed and tried to rush to him. Anthony wrapped his arms around her waist and stopped her. He pulled her close.

Why are you with him?’ His mouth moved over her neck. ‘We had so much fun together.’ He moved his hand over Cora’s breast. She shivered under his touch.’

‘Please.’ Cora cried. ‘Please don’t.’

“Cora, Cora wake up. Cora?” A warm hand was shaking her awake.

Cora opened her eyes and looked into the worried eyes of Robert. He was sitting next to her on the mattress. She hid into his chest and started sobbing.

Robert moved his hands over Cora’s back and made sussing sounds. “Did you see Anthony tonight?”

Her face still pressed against Robert’s chest she shook her head. “No.” She said very softly.

“Did Carson tell you, he was spotted around your house?”

“Yes.” Cora said softly.

“He shouldn’t have.” Robert frowned.

Cora pushed herself back a little. “What reason should he have given me then for sleeping here and not in my own house?”

“That is a valid point.” Robert still frowned. “I wish I had been home earlier, I am sorry.”

“You are here now.” Cora pressed herself against Robert’s chest again. “Are you coming to bed?” She asked.

Robert placed a kiss on the top of her head. “I will take a quick shower and then I come to bed.” He was already getting up, when Cora took his hand, with a cheeky smile on her face.

“What?” He asked clearly knowing what she was saying without words. “Cora!” He played innocent. “You have to get up early in the morning.”

“A warm shower will help me relax, the same as some exercise.” She threw the covers off, swung her legs over the edge of the bed and pushed Robert towards the bathroom. Her hands roaming over his stomach.

Robert was exhausted after this busy day, but feeling Cora’s warm body pressed against his back, her hands on his front, aroused him. He turned on the shower. Abruptly he turned around and picked Cora up. She let out a giggle, what aroused Robert even more. He pressed her against the wall and kissed her neck and chest. They were both still dressed, he in his chef’s jacket and she in her nightshirt. Her breasts were shining through her shirt, he looked at them, rising and falling with her rapid breathing. “How beautiful you are.” He murmured.

Cora giggled, her hand was playing with him. Suddenly there was a lot of noise downstairs and the clinking of glass. She pulled her hand back and froze. “What was that?” She said out of breath.

Robert jerked back and turned around.

Downstairs there was more and more noise. They heard voices. Cora recognised Carson’s low voice and then the voice that would haunt her forever. “Anthony is here.” She whispered.

Robert ran downstairs. “You stay here!” He quickly turned around, when he noticed Cora was following him. “Stay upstairs!” His eyes shot fire and Cora knew to obey him. There were more voices and through the windows Cora saw the blue lights of police cars.

Is this love? Chapter 29

Robert fixed his tie. He saw Cora coming closer in the corner of his eye. She was wearing a long black dress with a shawl on her shoulders. She stroke with her hands over his jacket and kissed him on his cheek.

“Are you ready?” She asked.

Robert hummed. Not being able to speak. How could he be ready for his dad’s funeral. He was only 30 years old, he shouldn’t he burying his father. He felt Cora’s hand resting on his chest, on the place where his heart was beating. She didn’t say anything, she just stood there giving him comfort.

He sighed and put his hand on top of Cora’s and murmured a thank you. Still not able to form a word without starting to cry.

Cora kissed him on his cheek again. “It’s alright. We should go.” She slid her hand in his and guided him towards the car.

They had slept in his old house, it had been easier. His family home was outside of London and it would have been a hustle being on time. Violet had been to upset to complain, Cora also slept here. Rosamund had advised them to sleep in separate rooms, because she would start after the funeral.

The church service was beautiful and a lot of nice words were said about Patrick. It was very clear he was a well loved person in the community. Robert had managed to say a few words and it resulted in Violet nodding approvingly.

After the service, the family went home. Cora had said she shouldn’t be there, but both Rosamund and Robert had asked her to stay.

“Patrick loved Judith, a shame she wasn’t at the funeral.” Violet started, once they were sitting in the living room, drinking a cup of tea.

“Mother!” Rosamund exclaimed, perfectly knowing what her mother was doing.

“It’s the truth and you all know it. He didn’t even know Cora.”

Cora’s cheeks coloured bright red and Robert took her hand in his.

“It’s a shame, Papa never got the change to meet with Cora. He would have lover her, the same way I do.”

He felt Cora squeeze his hand.

“I still don’t understand why she needed to be there.” Violet continued.

“Because she and Robert are in a relationship. Mother this isn’t the day to pick fight, papa would not have wanted that.” She looked at Robert who was visibly getting angry. “Why don’t you take Cora for a walk, I think she would love to see the gardens?”

Cora got the hint and got up. “Rosamund is right, from what I saw already they look amazing.”

Robert got up on silence and walked out of the living room with Cora in his heels.

+++

Once outside Cora put her arm in Robert’s and they started walking. Robert remained silent for a long time. Cora slowly moved her fingers over Robert’s arm, when she noticed he was crying. He turned his face away.

“Robert.” Cora stopped walking and turned towards Robert. “It is alright to cry.” She looked up and saw a tear run down his cheek. Softly she brushed it of his cheek. Then she put her arms around him and pulled him close. Rubbing his back in a slow movement. Robert let go of his tears, something he never did, but Cora’s arms around him, made him loose control.

“Oh Cora.” He started once he was able to speak again. “I wish my mother changed her views, once she had seen you and oh how I wish my father had met you. He would have loved you.”

Cora had started walking again, she was silent next to him. He looked down at her, she was a tall woman, but because of his own length, she needed to look up at him. He was a lucky man, with her next to him.

The moment he had that thought, she looked up at him. Her blue eyes full with compassion. “What else is troubling you?” She asked.

Robert sighed, they knew each other for 3, almost 4 months now and she was reading him so well. “With my father’s dead, there is now a big responsibility on my shoulders and I am not sure if I can keep the restaurant.”

Cora gasped. “But that’s where your hearth is. You love your work in the restaurant.”

“I know, but I think you already noticed. Molesley called me a lord.”

Cora nodded.

“Our title is Grantham.” Robert continued.

“Now I get why the restaurant is called ‘Le Grantham’ and not Crawley.” Cora interrupted.

Robert chuckled. “That is indeed as a reference.” He took a deep breath. “There is an estate attached to the title. Called Downton Abbey. Nearby is a small hospital, my father was head of the board. Officially that title now belongs to my mother, but she wants me to take it upon me. Or better yet, she had hoped Judith would become the next head of board. But we know how that ended.”

“Who is living at that estate?” Cora asked, trying to process everything Robert had told her.

“We have people who maintain the house and estate. In exchange, they are allowed to live in the house. Mother never agreed with the move out of the house, but my father loved living close to London. Mainly because he knew of my wish to open a restaurant and Rosamund’s longing to be in the city.”

“Let me guess, your mother wants to move back to Downton?”

Robert sighed again. “She is indeed counting on me to move back. But I can’t. I can not give up my restaurant. I don’t know how I will manage the hospital and my restaurant, but I don’t want to give up on this passion.”

“You should not have to make that decision. That is not fair on you.”

“Our world isn’t always fair, Cora. We have our duties.”

Now it was Cora who sighed. “I don’t understand how the nobility works here in England. But can’t you open the position as head of board?”

Robert chuckled. “You indeed have a lot to learn.” He pulled her close and placed a kiss on the tip of her nose. “But that’s for another day.” He took a deep breath. “Let’s focus on the here and now.”

“You have to tell me how it works.”

“I will, but not today.”

Is this love? Chapter 28

“You never went horse riding?” Robert asked in surprise.

“Is that so strange?” Cora responded, standing next to a light brown mare.

“If this was the area I had been growing up, I would have been out here every weekend on a horse.”

Cora remembered the day one of her friends went horse riding and came back with a spinal cord injury. She shivered at the thought of it. “It just never happened, I did other things.” She looked up at the mare.

The handler stepped towards her. “I will help you up.” He continued in a softer tone. “This mare is very gentle and she will follow your lead easily.”

Cora gave him a thankful look and let him help her up. She saw Robert looking at her, once she sat up. He gave her a smile, and guided his horse towards her.

“We will start slow, it’s not that hard, follow the movements of the horse and you will be alright.” He leaned towards her and kissed her cheek.

“Be careful.” Cora exclaimed, when Robert went off at a high speed. The handler was still holding the reins.

“She will follow in your pace, don’t worry.”

Cora let out a deep sigh and urged the horse to follow. She would have loved the handler to come with her, but she knew she needed to have faith.

Robert had slowed down and was waiting for Cora to come closer. They continued at a slower pace. “This is one of the best feelings in the world.” Robert said. “Surrounded by beautiful nature, on a majestic animal and in the best company I could wish for.”

Cora coloured, but gave Robert a radiant smile.

Robert felt warm inside, this morning they had continued where they stopped last night. Cora had surprised him by waking him up with kisses on his chest. It had turned into a steamy morning. He was grateful Cora was feeling this safe in his arms. She deserved to feel loved and he was determined to only give her the best.

He held back a little, Cora didn’t notice and she rode on. Robert watched her move with the horse. She was so elegant. Her dark brown hair was blowing in the wind. She had let it down this morning and scolded Robert when he couldn’t stop playing with it.

“What are you waiting for?” Cora had turned around and looked at him with raised eyebrows.

Robert came closer again. “I was admiring you.” He admitted.

Cora chuckled.

+++

“I will bring the horses back.” Robert said when they returned to the cabin.

Cora kissed him softly. “I will start making dinner.” She leaned against him for a second and then watched him ride off. He was so handsome, high on that horse, with the other next to him. Her cowboy, she thought.

Back inside she lit up the fire and started on dinner. She was almost finished when Robert returned. She knew instantly something was wrong when she saw his face. She turned down the heat and stepped towards him. “What is wrong?” She asked, putting her hand on his arm.

Robert shook his head and was fighting against the tears.

Cora guided him to a chair. “Something bad happened?”

Robert looked up and locked his eyes with Cora’s. She saw a deep pain in them. “It’s my dad.” He started, but his voice was thick with tears.

Cora got up to get a glass of water. Thankful Robert drank and continued. “I need to go back to London as fast as possible. Hopefully I can be back in time to see my father one last time.”

Cora’s eyes grew big. “We are booking our flights right now.” She got up to get her tablet.”

Robert put his hand on her arm. “You don’t have to come with me. I thought you could go back to your mother and spend some more time with her.”

“I will not let you go home alone. No, I am coming with you.” Cora said resolutely.

“Oh Cora.” Robert’s eyes filled with tears.

Cora pulled him close and let him cry.

+++

They managed to get a flight the next morning. The flight had gone smoothly. Robert had been very quiet from time to time, but also had moments he told Cora about his dad. Cora had let him talk, she didn’t push him when he didn’t say anything for hours. Those moments she only took his hand and brushed his hand with her thumb. In the meantime praying they would be on time.

At Heathrow airport, a car was already waiting for them. Cora hadn’t realized Robert hadn’t booked a cab, but that this was their own chauffeur. Before she realized, the car stopped in front of a big house. Robert got out and walked towards the front door. He stopped when he noticed Cora wasn’t following.

“Cora?” He put out his hand. “Are you coming?”

Cora looked up at the house, she was in shock. She had been anxious Robert would be overwhelmed with the house in New York, but she never realized he came from a wealthy family himself. “I better go home, Robert.” She said.

Robert walked back and took her hand. “I want you next to me.” He looked at her. “Please.”

Cora almost melted by the sight of his puppy eyes. “I will come inside with you.” She took his hand, his fingers wrapped around hers.

They walked towards the house in silence, at the door a man was waiting. “Milord.” He said welcoming Robert and nodded towards Cora.

Cora grabbed his hand a bit more firmly, when she realized what the butler had said.

“Thank you Molesley, are they upstairs?”

“They are Milord.”

Upstairs, Robert let go of Cora’s hand and walked in the room where his family was.

Cora waited in the hallway, not wanting to interrupt. She saw Robert hug Rosamund and a woman who must be his mother, then he sat down next to the man laying in bed. They exchanged some words. The man let out a last breath, when Robert said it was alright to go.

Is this love? Chapter 27

Robert was woken up by two cold feet pressed against his calves. He turned around and felt Cora crawl closer to him.

“Cora!” He whispered. “What are you doing?”

“I had a bad dream.” Was the only thing she said, burying her face in the crook of his neck.

Robert wrapped his arm around her and pulled her close. He kissed the top of her head. “What if your mother walks in?”

He felt Cora chuckle. “I hope my mother isn’t walking into your bedroom at night.” Martha had insisted they slept in separate bedrooms. Although they were both adults, they didn’t argue and just complied.

“But she might do in yours!” Robert sounded concerned .

“She won’t, she has never done that when I still lived here.” Cora leaned on her elbows. “I will make sure to be back in my room, before everybody wakes up.” She kissed him and rested her head on his chest.

“Tonight we can sleep in the same bed. For now, go on, go back to your own room.” Robert insisted.

Cora pouted. “But I want to lay next to you now.”

Robert moved his hand over her back. “I know, but I don’t want to be in the bad books with your mother and heaven forbid with your brother.”

“Darling.” Cora’s hand was playing with Robert’s chest hair. “After Anthony you are a gift from heaven in their eyes.”

Robert got up a little to kiss Cora. “And I want to keep it that way.” He tickled her. “I see you at breakfast.”

Reluctantly Cora got out of his bed and walked back to her own room.

+++

“Good morning, darling sister.” Harold greeted Cora when she came downstairs. “Did you sleep well?” He said this with a grin on his face.

Cora raised her eyebrows, did he see her? “Yes.” she said expectantly. “You?”

“I was woken in the middle of the night, but otherwise, yes.” He winked at Cora.

Cora leaned in. “Please don’t tell Mama.” She whispered.

Harold patted her hand. “I am young too.” Was the only thing he said.

Robert came down and sat at the breakfast table, he filled his plate with scrambled eggs and bacon. “Good morning everyone.” He said.

+++

“Cora. Do be careful.” Martha said, kissing Cora on her cheek.

Cora wrapped her arms around her mother. “We will, hopefully we can see each other soon.” She pulled her mother even closer, although she knew she didn’t like that. She needed the warmth of her mother. She and Robert were going to Hudson Valley, to an equestrian barn for the coming 5 days, then they would fly back home.

After a short drive they arrived in the barn. The luxurious suite had one bedroom with a king bed and gas fireplace, spacious living room/kitchen area, a loft with a Queen bed and full bathroom. Wrap around balcony and north and south deck boasts: outdoor hot tub, grill and seating.

“What a wonderful place this is.” Cora said excitedly when they stepped inside. “How did you find this?”

“Your brother Harold helped me. We will have this space for just the two of us.”

Cora put her arm around his waist. “I love you for this.”

“Only for this?” Robert teased and put his hands on Cora’s waist, and pulled her in front of him. He looked down at her smiling face. Her blue eyes were sparkling, he saw her batting her eyelashes. He felt butterflies in his stomach. How lucky he was having her in his arms.

Cora got on her tiptoes and kissed the tip of his nose. “What are you thinking of?”

Robert smiled and kissed her lips, she answered with passion. “How happy you make me.” He muttered against her lips.

He felt Cora’s nails dug deeper in his back. “I want you.” she whispered.

Robert pulled back and looked her in the eye. “Are you sure?”

Cora pressed her hips against his manhood and kissed his neck. She took his hands and pulled him towards the bed.

Robert lowered himself over Cora, he covered her face and neck with kisses. His fingers working to unbutton her blouse. He felt his heart racing, was this really happening? He moved his kisses to her chest, once her blouse was off. His finger trailed the line of her bra, he saw her skin getting Goosebumps. He hoped it was from pleasure.

He felt Cora’s hand roam over his back. She tilted her head backwards and let out a soft moan when he lifted her skirt and touched her through her panties. He stopped and looked at her. “Are you sure?” He said with a trembling voice.

Cora opened her eyes, she saw Robert looking down on her with a frown on his forehead. Her heart melted, there was so much love and concern in his eyes. She felt perfectly safe in his hands and was longing to experience life to the fullest with him. “I am.” Her voice was just a soft whisper. Her hand moved to his manhood and she felt him grow.

She pulled his pants down and played with him, now she was hovering over him. Her lips tracing a line of kisses over his stomach until she reached him. She pleased him until he lifted her up and placed her on her back.

She felt his finger inside her. Cora arched her back to give him better access. She almost reached her high when he suddenly stopped. With a hot breath he said. “Are you ready?”

Cora nodded, feeling nervous, but ready at the same time. She closed her eyes when Robert entered her. For a moment she had to fight the images coming into her mind. But Robert’s soft movements and tender kisses reassured her. Slowly but steady Robert’s thrusts were getting stronger.

Robert let out a cry when he released himself and laid down half on top of Cora. He was playing with her curls. Wrapping a string of hair around his finger. “Thank you for trusting me.” he said with a sensuous voice.

Cora’s fingers were brushing over his shoulder blade in a slow movement. She didn’t say anything. Their legs were tangled. She felt sweat tickle on her legs, but she didn’t want to move. She was soaking up the feeling of Robert’s warm skin against hers. The soft hairs on his chest against the sensitive skin on her breasts. His heartbeat against hers.

Unwilling to break the connection, Robert was getting up. “I will light a fire.” He said. “So you can freshen up.”

Cora didn’t know it was possible, but she was starting to love this man even more. He knew how a woman’s body worked and what was needed after.

She watched him getting up and followed him with her eyes. She had noticed before he wasn’t ripped, but he was in very good shape. His buttocks had the perfect shape and she loved having something to hold on to, she realized.

Robert started making a fire and in the corner of his eye he saw Cora get in the bathroom. Her hips swayed with every step. Her small, but round breasts bounced slightly. How wonderful she had felt around him. He never had this feeling with Judith. Cora made sure he had enjoyed it too. That was something new to him. He let out a deep sigh out of happiness, got back in bed and waited for Cora to return.

Is this love? 26

Cora put her hand on Robert’s, when she heard him taking a deep breath. “She will not eat you.”

Robert turned his head towards Cora. “I am not so sure and definitely not about your brother.”

“Darling.” Cora stopped for a second, she surprised herself with that word. She gave Robert a smile. “You don’t have to worry, I told them only good stories about you.” She leaned against his shoulder. They were sitting in a cab from the airport to her mother’s house. Martha had offered her chauffeur, but Cora was afraid Robert would already be overwhelmed by her mother’s richness.

She looked out the window and saw the familiar landscape. Her heart filled with love she felt for this country. She was truly at her place in London, but this was where she had her roots. The smells were different, but even the colours. The driver stopped at the gate.

“Can you drive up to the house?” Cora asked.

“Only when you pay more.” The driver said, staring in front of him.

Robert huffed. “Just drive, we will pay.” He said annoyed.

Now it was Cora who was starting to feel nervous. It had been 5 years since she had seen her mother and brother. She felt Robert’s hand on her knee. She smiled softly, he was so in tune with her. It was mind-boggling, they knew each other, a little over 2 months, but it felt like years. She had never been at ease with someone this quickly.

Her hand moved to her neck, this morning Robert gave her a thin necklace with a small key on it. ‘This is the key to my heart.’ He had said, kissing her softly.

The car stopped, Robert rushed out to open her side. He was such a gentleman, she thought. The driver had taken their suitcases out.

Cora saw Robert looking up at the mansion. She would love to know what he was thinking. She tangled her fingers in his. “This is where I grew up.”

“Beautiful place.” He said. The house was a three story building, it felt like a small castle. The big windows let in a lot of light.

Martha came out the front door. “Cora!”

“Mother.” Cora rushed towards her mother. “How lovely to see you.” She wrapped both arms around her

“As long as it is.” Martha replied, she pushed Cora back. “So this is your knight?”

Cora blushed, she had called Robert her knight in shining armor. She turned towards Robert and held out her hand. “Mama, meet Robert Crawley. Chef and owner of a two Michelin star restaurant.”

Robert kissed Martha on her cheek. “Thank you for welcoming me.”

“Now, come inside. There is a fresh apple pie and coffee.”

Cora saw Robert’s face when her mother mentioned coffee. He didn’t drink a lot of coffee and especially after a long day of travel, he longed for a cup of tea. “Do you have tea? Mama?”

Martha stopped and turned around. “Oh my, you have turned into an English woman, with your tea.” She smiled. “We will boil the water on the stoof and not put it in the microwave.”

Cora chuckled when she heard Robert’s sigh of relief. They walked inside, and sat down in the living room. Although it was a very big room, it felt cozy.

“Where is Harold?” Cora asked, when Martha sat down.

“Oh you know your brother. Late as always.” Martha said, annoyed. “But never mind that son of mine. Nice to meet you Mr. Crawley, tell me about your work.”

Cora knew when Robert started about his work, he would keep going for a while. She didn’t mind, the long travel day had worn her out. The chair she was sitting in was very comfortable. Robert had sat down in one of the chairs, so Cora also picked one.

+++

Cora opened her eyes, she was confused. Slowly she remembered where she was. She was curled up in a comfy chair, with a blanket draped over her. She was in her mother’s living room.

She got up and started looking for Robert. Soon she heard voices coming from downstairs. She went down, she recognised her brother’s voice.

In the doorway she stopped and looked at the scene in front of her. Robert and Harold were playing pool. Harold was explaining something to Robert. She scraped her throat and both men looked up.

“I see you met my brother Harold.” Cora said while stepping towards Harold and kissing him on the cheek. “It’s so wonderful seeing you again.”

“We should go for a walk.” Harold said.

“Is it alright, if I shut my eyes for a couple of minutes?” Robert looked at Cora.

Cora smiled at him, he was feeling the same jetlag she was having. “I will show you our room.”

“The butler can do that.” Harold said and rang for the butler. “Mr. Crawley would love to know where his room is, can you show him?” He said to the butler when he arrived.

“Let’s walk and talk.” Harold took Cora’s arm and walked outside.

“I miss our little chats.” Cora said, hanging on Harold’s arm, being very content.

“I do too, sis. I do too.” Harold tapped Cora’s hand which was resting on his arm. “Now tell me about Anthony. What happened.”

Cora told him everything, from the moment he started to change and being rough until his physical and mental abuse. She heard Harold gasping several times during her story and she couldn’t blame him. It was difficult to hear.

“I am happy you got rid of that man.” Harold said. “If I had lived closer, he would not be able to get away with this so easily. And he would have had a black and blue face.”

“Good thing you don’t. I don’t want a brother in jail.

After a long time, Harold and Cora were back at the house. “Is Robert still sleeping?” She asked the hall boy.

She got upstairs to the room he was sleeping in. He was laying on top of the sheets, in a deep sleep. Cora crawled next to him, wrapping her arm around him. He woke up a little and turned his face, kissed her lips and closed his eyes again.

Is this love? Chapter 25

“Are you sure you can take the time off?” Cora was sitting in Robert’s office at ‘Le Grantham’. Something they did almost daily at the end of her work day. Robert had shown her some flight and hotel options. They had a little fight over where to sleep while they would be in New York earlier.

Cora insisted on sleeping at her mother’s place, the mansion was big enough to not disturb each other. But Robert didn’t want to hear it. ‘I have the money to pay for a hotel and I want to spoil you.’ He had said. Cora remembered how hurt she was, that Robert didn’t want to stay in her mother’s house. ‘Are you afraid that she will be too American? Because you will find that in a hotel too’ And.’ She had continued with her hands on her hips. ‘I happen to be an American too.’

Robert had let out a deep sigh. ‘Cora, I didn’t mean anything like that.’

Well, you make it seem like that. We stay at my mother’s place, or I am going alone.’ Cora had still been standing there with her hands on her hips, with a fire in her eyes.

Robert had started to chuckle, which made Cora even more mad. ‘Are you laughing at me now?’

No, I wouldn’t dare. Why don’t we stay a couple of days at your mother’s place and then we will stay in a hotel? So we can have some time together.‘

Cora softened a little bit. She knew why she got this angry. Anthony had always said, she was worth less because of her American blood.

“Cora?” Robert ran his hand over Cora’s arm. “Everything okay?”

Cora looked up, woken from her memory, she gave Robert a soft smile. “Yes.”

“Cora, you know I didn’t mean anything bad earlier?” Softly he squeezed her hand.

She nodded, shook her head and looked up. “Well, we should finalize the plans, so I can inform my mother we are coming. But only if you are truly sure you can be missed here.”

“We will miss him like a toothache.” John joked while walking into the office.

For a minute, Cora worried about Robert’s reaction, but remembered they went back a long time. She got up. “I will leave you two.” She bent down and kissed Robert. “Do I see you tonight?”

Robert cupped her head with his hand and pulled her in for another kiss. “If you want me to?”

Cora smirked. “You know I do.” She turned around and walked away.

Playful Robert gave a little tap on her thigh. Cora smiled, she was still amazed how different it all felt. When Anthony did something like this, it was always to hurt her and only for his own pleasure. But with Robert everything was different. He didn’t want to hurt her, not physically and not mentally. He was careful with her not to scare her by touching her without her consent. They slept in the same bed, but nothing more than kisses and cuddling happened.

Robert said he wanted to be sure Cora was ready for it. And Cora knew he was right, she wasn’t ready for it. She still flinched when he touched her hip or moved his hand to her throat without her seeing it. Her therapy was working, but it was a slow process. She knew that she couldn’t ask Robert not to touch her during real intimacy, so they waited.

Secretly Cora loved this, it felt old fashioned, but at the same time wonderful. She was learning more about Robert himself. They spend the evenings on the sofa, listening to music, reading a book and talking for hours. She learned Robert came from an old noble family, but he decided to work like a normal man. His sister Rosamund had married a rich man, she didn’t have to work. She instead worked for charities. His mother and father were the example of an English noble marriage, Robert said. They didn’t really love each other, the marriage had been an arranged one. Nonetheless they were happy together.

Robert started to tear up every time he talked about his father. He was very weak and they didn’t know how long he would live. Cora had voiced they should go and visit him soon. Robert took her hand and pressed his lips on it. ‘I am blessed with you in my life. Judith never cared for my parents.’ Cora had smiled. ‘We are both in a better place.’

Cora stepped outside and nodded to the security guard. Robert had arrangements for 24/7 protection. Anthony was nowhere to be found. After the last incident they went to the police, now they were searching for him. Robert didn’t feel at ease knowing he could be walking around in the neighbourhood, so he hired a private bodyguard.

“I would love to walk home tonight.” She said to Carson.

“Of course ma’am, I will walk with you.”

Carson’s stayed a couple of steps behind Cora, she stopped and turned around. “It would feel less awkward if you walked next to me.”

“Whatever you wish ma’am.” Was his answer.

Much to Carson’s surprise Cora hooked her arm in his and started a light conversation.

“How is your wife doing? Elsie is her name right?”

Carson’s thick eyebrows moved. “She is fine ma’am.” He sniffed and lifted his chin as a sign that he wasn’t going to say anything else.

Cora had started to get fond of this big man. He gave her a secure feeling and she knew even if Anthony came close, Carson’s would keep her safe. She smiled, in about two weeks she would see her mother again and Harold. Dear Harold, her foolish brother, who always managed to step in two ditches at the same time.

Is this love? Chapter 24

Cora woke up, and she realized her head wasn’t pounding anymore. There was more air coming in through her nose. She felt better, her fever had finally gone after a couple of days. She didn’t remember much of them, besides that she slept a lot.

The day her sickness started, Robert had been unexpectedly in her home. She smiled thinking of his words. ‘I am head over heels in love with you.’

Cora closed her eyes again and stretched her body. She turned around and bumped into someone. She opened her eyes again and was looking at the sleeping figure of a man. She recognised the curling of his hair and she thought he needed a hair cut. She scooted closer, and rested her hand against his back.

It was a lovely surprise to find him in her bed, although she didn’t remember him getting in with her. It didn’t matter, she loved waking up next to Robert already. Strange how different this felt compared to Anthony.

Her fingers were trailing his back up and down, which woke him up. He turned around, Cora’s hand moved to his chest and he took her hand in his. Placing a soft kiss on the back of her hand.

“Good morning.” He said with a raspy sleepy voice. “Are you feeling better?”

Cora scooted a little closer so her head rested on his upper arm. “A lot better. I think my fever is gone.” She tiled her head so she looked up at Robert.

Robert kissed the top of her nose. “That is a relief. You scared me last night. You were having really bad dreams and your temperature kept rising.

“It was a surprise waking up next to you.” Cora said.

Robert jerked up. “Oh no, I am sorry. I should not have slept here.” Robert was trying to get out of bed.

Cora grabbed his arm. “Where are you going? I only said it was a surprise. And I meant it was a nice surprise.” She got up a little and leaned over to his side. “Come back to bed please?” She pleaded, rubbing her thumb over his arm. The hairs on his arm felt soft.

Robert looked at her. “Are you sure?”

“As sure as I am laying here. I need to thank you for taking care of me.”

Robert got a cheeky smile on his face. “Do you have the energy for that?”

Cora’s eyes grew big and a blush appeared on her cheeks. “Not in that way!” She exclaimed.

Robert crawled back in bed and scooped Cora in his arms again. “I will redeem that thank you later.” He winked.

Cora chuckled. “You bet.” She relaxed her body and said in a soft voice. “Is it alright to just lay here and sleep some more?”

Robert pressed his nose in Cora’s hair and murmured. “More than alright.” Before he finished his sentence he heard the soft snores of Cora.

+++

Robert had gone out of bed as soon as Cora was fast asleep. He watched some tv, then he made breakfast and brought it upstairs. He sat down next to Cora, watching her for a while. Her chest was slowly rising and falling. Her face was all relaxed, he loved her snores, he thought they were incredibly cute. He couldn’t resist and followed her jawline with his finger, he woke Cora up. His finger moved to her lips, softly moving his thumb from left to right. Cora pressed a kiss on his thumb.

“Did you sleep well?” He asked.

“I did.” Cora looked at the clock. “11.00 o’clock already!” She shot up.

Robert smiled at her and softly placed his hands on her shoulders. “Where is the rush?” He asked, still smiling at her.

“I can’t be still in bed at this time of the day.”

Robert chuckled. “You spend the last three days in bed, so these hours will not make a difference. I made you breakfast.”

He put a small table over her lap with a plate filled with buttered toast, fried eggs and bacon.

Cora gave him a warm smile. “You took such good care of me.” She took a bite of the bacon.

“Everything for my princess.” He took her chin in his hand. “Now, am I allowed to kiss you?”

Cora chuckled and leaned forward, as far as the small table allowed.

Robert felt her soft warm lips against his. She tasted like the bacon she just ate. He moved his tongue and she granted him access. He discovered her mouth, her tongue against his. He felt her hunger for him. Her hands were playing with his hair.

When they broke the connection she chuckled. “You need a hair cut.”

Robert looked at her in surprise. “So, that is what you are thinking of when you kiss me?”

Cora smiled. Robert loved her smile, her whole face lit up and there was a sparkle in her eyes that he had never seen in anyone’s eyes before. “Yes, and it is a pity that my breakfast is cooling down.”

Robert laughed out loud, kissed her very briefly and said. “I will not keep you from your food, Milady.”

Cora chuckled and leaned in to kiss him again, when the doorbell rang.

“Are you expecting somebody?” Robert asked.

“No, not that I know off.” Cora looked down at her nightwear. “Can you go?”

Robert got up. “Enjoy your breakfast. I will have a look.”

He walked down and opened the front door. There was a man standing with a box of chocolates in his hands, he was vaguely familiar. Robert gave him a surprised look. “Can I help you?” He asked.

“I should ask that question to you.” The man answered. “Who are you and what are you doing in this house?”

Robert heard an undertone he didn’t like and it clicked instantly, this was Anthony. He made himself a little bigger and closed the door a bit more. “Cora doesn’t want to see you and you are not allowed to be here.”

The eyes of the man narrowed. “Who are you to tell me where I can be or not!”

“It doesn’t matter who I am, there is a court order and you aren’t allowed to be here! Leave or I will call the police.”

“I will be back, mark my words. That court order will end one day!” Anthony said.

Robert closed the door, his heart was pounding in his chest and he needed a minute to compose himself. The nerve that guy had.

“Who was it?”

Robert got spooked by Cora’s question. She was standing in the hallway, with the breakfast tray in her hands.

“Anthony.” Robert said.

Cora almost dropped the tray. “What did he want?” She asked.

“I think he had another peace offer, but now he is outraged because of me.”

“Oh no. If he finds out who you are, and he will! You will not be safe.”

Robert stepped towards Cora. That’s why you need to call the police and report he has been coming here recently and breaking the restraining order. You can’t let him get away with it.”

He saw Cora straighten her back. “You are right. It’s done, he doesn’t have any power over me!”
