It took you a year! Chapter 52

Cora woke up with Robert’s arm still around her. She pressed herself a little bit closer to him. He didn’t wake, but his arm closed her in. There was no better feeling than this she thought.

She moved her hand to her abdomen, what if there was another little bean growing inside her? They didn’t know why her placenta ruptured, maybe it wouldn’t happen this time? She tried to get some more sleep. After a while she gave up. She felt a familiar feeling in her abdomen, got up and went to the bathroom.

Robert woke up noticing Cora was gone, he found her in the bathroom. “Is everything alright?”

Cora nodded. “We don’t have to go to Dr. Clarkson.” Her voice broke.

Robert pulled her against his chest. “Our family is perfect the way it is.” He held her until he felt she stopped crying.

Cora looked up at him. “I am sorry to be a disappointment.”

“What?” Robert exclaimed. “You aren’t a disappointment, far from it. Oh my darling. Of course a baby boy or another girl would had been wonderful, but look at what we have.”

Cora pressed her face against his chest. “You are right, I know you are.” She kissed him on the lips. “Now, I will prepare for the day, there is enough to do with the drive-in at the end of this week.”

+++

Cora was sitting with Edith in the music room, she was learning to play the piano. “Wonderful darling, you did practice really well, your teacher will be proud.”

Suddenly the door opened and Violet stormed in. “You totally ignored my wishes!” She shouted.

Cora stood, and glanced at Edith. “I don’t know what you are taking about, but can we do this somewhere else.”

“You know very well what I am talking about. How could you organise that drive-in. I specifically said no to this plan.”

Cora put her hands on her hips. “Mama, you realise this isn’t your home!”

Violet gasped.

“Robert and I decide what kind of events we will have, and we live in the modern times, this will bring a decent amount of money.”

Violet huffed and turned around.

“Mama?” Edith said with a soft voice.

Cora turned around, she forgot for a minute she was in the room. “Yes, darling.”

“Why do grandmamma and you fight al the time?”

Cora sat down next to Edith. “Your grandmamma doesn’t agree on my thinking. But I love her nonetheless.” She brushed her hair. “Come let me hear your new song you learned.”

+++

“Milady?” Carson said. “Where do you want the food and drink trucks?”

Cora turned around and gave Carson the map they made. She pointed. “On this side the food trucks and than on this side the drinks. This way we will keep the crowd separated.”

“Good, I will tell them.”

Robert walked over to Cora and gave her a quick kiss on her cheek. “I am proud of you.”

Cora smiled at him. “Let’s first see if this truly works out the way we hope.”

“No, it is not only this event.”

“Oh?”

Robert put his arm around her waist. “I love how you stand up for yourself against my mama.”

Cora’s cheeks coloured. “I was afraid you would be angry, about the way I spoke to your mother.”

Robert chuckled. “Far from it. You are the lady of the house, and we have this house back because of you. And you run it very well.”

Cora turned to face Robert and kissed him.

“Iewwwww.” They heard behind them. All three of their girls were looking at them.

Robert stepped towards them and tickled them. “Your daddy loves your mummy, that is totally normal.”

“That can be, but we don’t want to see that.” Edith said.

“Mama?” Mary asked. “May we see the movie on Friday?”

“You may stay up for it. Yes.” Cora cupped her cheek. “And now, I will go on. Otherwise there will be no drive-in this Friday.”

+++

The drive-in had been a great success. Robert pulled Cora close to him. “You did wonderful darling.”

Cora moved her head to look at him. She was almost asleep. “Thank you.”

“You made me very proud today. I can’t wait to see what the future will bring us.”

“As long as the adventures are with you, I am up for it.” She softly kissed his lips. “I don’t want anything else, than seeing the children grow, with you on my side.”

Robert kissed her back. “That’s a wonderful wish. I can only hope we will grow very old together with our darling girls.”

I want to thank everybody for reading this story. Your reviews meant so much too me. And a special thanks to Maja and Pam who helped me so many times.

I next story is already written, a short one. But I will work on a new idea, so you can expect two new stories soon.

It took you a year!, chapter 51

“Milady?” Mrs. Hughes looked at Cora with raised eyebrows.

“I am sorry, I was miles away. You were saying?” Cora tried to focus on the conversation again.

“The company who is going to lay down the steel plates, said they will come a day later.”

“Oh no, they can’t. They will mess-up the whole schedule. I am going to give them a call. Thank you for telling me.” Cora pulled out her phone and dialled the number.

+++

“Is her Ladyship, serious about this?” Carson said when Mrs. Hughes returned downstairs.

“She is, isn’t it marvellous. A drive-in cinema at Downton.”

“I wonder what the dowager Countess thinks of it” Carson grumbled.

Mrs. Hughes chuckled. “You know what she will think of it. She is the same as you.”

Carson frowned. “She is not.”

Mrs. Hughes kissed Carson’s cheek. “Yes, she is.”

+++

“Cora?” Robert entered her study. “Why didn’t you tell me Mr. Bamford is coming for dinner tonight?”

Cora looked up from her papers. “Didn’t I? Oh, I am sorry darling. I thought I did.”

Robert stepped closer. “What is wrong, darling?”

Cora lowered her eyes, but quickly looked up again. “Nothing darling.” She cupped his cheek. “Oh, look at the time, almost dinner time, I haven’t changed yet.” She got up, gave Robert a quick kiss and went upstairs.

Robert felt something was troubling Cora, but he didn’t want to push her. Not with the stress around the drive-in cinema. It was her own idea, but it was more work than expected. He followed her upstairs to change.

+++

“Mr. Bamford, welcome back at Downton.” Cora shook his hand.

“It has been some years.” He looked down at Mary, Edith and Sybil, who were lined up to greet him. “Some things have changed, I see. Congratulations on your beautiful family, lord Grantham.”

Robert walked with him to the dining room. Cora lowered herself. “Girls, you are allowed to eat at the big table tonight, but I want you all three to behave. No joking around, otherwise it is an early bedtime without dessert. She especially looked at Mary. She liked poking Edith, so she would act out.

Both girls nodded. Sybil was just staring at her with her big eyes. Cora saw her lip tremble. Quickly she picked her up and cuddled her. “You will get your dessert darling, don’t you worry.” This was not the moment for tears. She walked with her girls into the dining room, Robert was waiting for Cora to sit down. They still had the custom, that ladies should sit first.

Mrs. Patmore had outdone herself tonight. “Can you give my compliments to Mrs. Patmore. Dinner was excellent.”

“I will do that, Milady. Just so you know, it wasn’t Mrs. Patmore who prepared dinner for tonight.”

“Oh” Cora looked up in surprise.

“It was Alfred, Milady. “

“Alfred? Our footman?” Robert stopped his conversation with Mr. Bamford.

“He is training for a course at the Ritz, Milord.” Carson replied.

“Well, tell him, I think he is ready for it.” Cora said, helping Sybil of her chair. “Mr. Bamford, if you will excuse me. It is bedtime for this little lady.”

Mr. Bamford smiled at Sybil. “Sleep well.”

“Girls, I want you to go upstairs too.”

“But mum…..” Mary started until she saw the look in her mother’s eyes.

+++

Mr. Bamford had told Robert, the drive-in cinema would be a success, he heard everybody talking about it. ‘It is really good, you are raising money to help the homeless people on the streets of London.’

Robert emptied his Whiskey glass and started to walk upstairs, when Mrs. Hughes stopped him.

“Milord, I know it isn’t my place.” She hesitated.

“Go on.” Robert gave her a friendly smile.

“I am worried, her Ladyship has taken on too much load, by organising this drive-in.”

“She is acting differently, the last couple of days.” Robert frowned. “I will make sure to take something of her hands. Thank you, Mrs. Hughes.”

“I am sorry for sticking my nose in it.” She apologised.

Robert put his hand on her arm. “Her Ladyship is missing a mother in her life here at Downton, I don’t always notice what is going on. So, we are blessed to have you.” Robert realised what he said and coloured. “I didn’t mean, well, I know you are too young to be her mother, but you are like a mother figure to her.”

Mrs. Hughes chuckled. “I understand what you mean Milord.” She turned around and walked downstairs.

+++

Robert changed into his pyjamas and entered their bedroom. Cora was still sitting at her dressing table, staring at her own reflection.

“Is there anything I can do for the drive-in?” He asked.

She focused her attention at Robert and smiled. “I think the majority is done, there isn’t much anymore.”

“If, you are sure?” He gave her a worried look.

“I am. I finally got the conformation that the steel plates will be placed on the original date.” She touched his arm, got up and crawled into bed.

Robert got in on his side. He wished Cora would tell him what was bothering her.

Suddenly Cora turned around. “Robert? You remember we said, no more children?”

“We said that, because it isn’t safe. With Sybil, your placenta detached too early and almost cost you, your life.” He put his hand on hers.

Cora took in a deep breath. “I know.”

“Do you want to take the risk? You are kidding right?” He got anxious when he saw her tremble. “Cora?”

Cora buried her face in Robert’s chest. He rubbed her back. “Cora, darling?”

Cora murmured against his chest. “I am afraid we have to take that risk.”

Robert pushed Cora back, so he could look in her eyes. “What do you mean? We have been careful and used protection, you are taking anticonception?”

“You remember, my stomach bug last month.”

Robert got white as the sheets. “Oh my, you threw up the pill?”

“Possible, it may have interfered with the reliability.”

“We are going to Dr. Clarkson, first thing tomorrow morning. If you are pregnant, we will make sure you are under regular check ups. Oh darling.” He pulled her close again. “This is wonderful news and at the same time nerve wracking. No wonder you weren’t yourself for the last couple of days.” He kissed the top of her head.

“I hoped, I would get my period. I am late for about two weeks now.” She rested her head against his chest. As always, he had a calming effect on her.

It took you a year!, chapter 50

4 years later: Robert is 33, Cora 30, Mary 8, Edith 7, Sybil 4.

“Go and wake up your mother” Robert notched his girls towards the bedroom door. Mary was holding a breakfast tray.

“Happy birthday, to you. Happy birthday, to you.” They started singing when Robert opened the door.

Cora sat straight up, smiling at the sight of her family standing at the end of the bed. Edith was holding a little bag, and Sybil was hiding behind her big sisters.

“Happy birthday mummy.” Mary said handing her the tray.

Cora cupped her cheek. “Thank you darling.”

Edith stepped closer and handed her the bag. Inside was a jewellery box, with a small bracelet. The bracelet had 5 birth stones, a Amethyst for Mary, Diamond for Edith, Aquamarine for Sybil, Citrine for Robert and a Ruby for Cora.

“This is beautiful, thank you girls.” She kissed Mary and Edith on their cheek. She had put the breakfast tray aside and picked up Sybil. “And why are you so shy this morning?” She tickled her.

“Come on, darling. You practiced so hard.” Robert encouraged her.

Sybil was shaking her head.

“I will hear it later today, it’s alright darling.” She pulled her little girl close to her chest. Mary and Edith climbed on the bed to snuggle Cora.

Robert leaned in and kissed Cora. “Happy 30th birthday, darling. My present is waiting downstairs.”

Cora stretched her neck to kiss him back, her hands and arms were occupied by their girls. “There is more?”

“This.” He touched the bracelet on her arm. “This is just from the girls. I also bought you something.”

+++

Cora got downstairs, where Robert was waiting for her in the music room. She expected to see her girls there, but it was just Robert.

“The girls, have gone with John to pick up Rosamund from the station.” Robert said apologetic.

Cora stepped close to Robert and wrapped her arms around him. She put her face in his neck. “This way I can get a proper birthday kiss.” She touched his lips with her finger.

Robert chuckled. “You don’t want to know what is inside this box?” He pulled her closer while saying that.

Cora only shook her head. “First I want my birthday kiss.”

Robert lowered his face and kissed her briefly.

“That’s it?” Cora said in surprise. She pressed herself firmer against Robert.

He chuckled and moved his hands to her bum. He now kissed her longer. “Better?” He said jokingly.

Cora took his head in her hands and pressed her lips against his, she touched his lips with her tongue and slowly he opened his mouth for her. It turned into a long and passionate kiss. “This is better.” She said.

“Now, open your present.” Robert smiled at her.

Inside the box was a Taylor 814ce guitar made of Rosewood. Cora gasped when she saw the beautiful instrument. “Darling, this is to much.”

“Last time we were in London, you said you loved this guitar. There is nothing to much for my wonderful wife.” He kissed her again, but they got interrupted by the scraping of a throat. It was Carson.

“Lady Rosamund had arrived.” He announced.

Cora gave Robert one more quick kiss and walked outside the room to go an greet Rosamund.

+++

Cora was walking outside with Rosamund.

“I didn’t expect Robert to take the whole day off.” She said.

Cora chuckled. “He is a workaholic, but he knows when I want him around.”

+++

“Sybil, is 4 years already and still I don’t hear you or Cora talk about another baby.” Violet said when Robert sat down.

Robert looked at her. “You do remember the birth of Sybil? Right?”

“Of course I do.”

“Well there is your answer, we don’t want to risk Cora’s life.”

“So, I will never get a grandson?”

Robert sighed. “Mama, we would have loved to get a boy, but it wasn’t meant for us. We have three wonderful girls and Cora makes me incredibly happy. I can’t wish for anything more.”

Rosamund and Cora just entered when Robert said these words. She smiled at him, walked over to Violet and greeted her mother-in-law.

The girls came running in with Isis. Cora was worried about Isis. She was getting old and she was sleeping more and more.

Violet grinned at the sound the girls made and Robert told them to quit down a bit.

“Sorry, daddy.” Mary said.

Cora pulled her close, kissed her on the cheek and said: we will go out and play in a minute alright?”

Mary sat down and started reading her book.

+++

“Thank you for your words this afternoon.” Cora said scooting close to Robert.

He wrapped his arm around her. “Darling, I meant every letter of it. You make me happy. Look at the three wonderful girls you gave me. What else could I wish for?”

“Well.” Cora started, but Robert kissed her to stop her words.

“No, that wouldn’t make me happier. I am happy right now. I have you at my side. You fought twice for your life, that’s enough. We will enjoy our beautiful family and he happy with what we have.”

Cora laid her head down on Robert’s chest. “We are blessed. We truly are.”

She drifted of into a dream.

*Robert was walking towards the house. He was holding the hand of a little boy. Cora sat on a bench feeding the new baby boy. In the distance, Mary, Edith and Sybil came running. Cora took a deep breath. A few years back she could not have dreamed about having more children and here she was, feeding their new addition to the family.*

When Cora woke up she was disoriented and felt a bit depressed. She scooted closer against Robert and tried to ignore this dream. How she wished she could give Robert a baby boy, but she knew that it wasn’t safe to give birth again. She barely survived the birth of Sybil. Robert warmth and steady heartbeat calmed her down again and she drifted off again.

It took you a year!, chapter 49

“I want you to meet somebody.” Robert said taking both Mary’s and Edith’s hand. He walked into Cora’s hospital room. They had waited a day, Cora was mostly sleeping. The blood transfusion helped her to feel better, but she probably needed another one.

“Baby?” Edith asked with her sweet voice. Cora was sitting up with Sybil in her arms, she had the widest smile on her face, when Robert entered the room. He noticed she had one hand on her abdomen.

“Hello darlings, come meet your baby sister.” Cora said.

Robert lifted both girls onto the bed. Robert melted seeing al four girls together.

Mary scooted closer to Cora and touched Sybil’s head.

“Careful sweetheart.” Cora was nervous about her reaction. From the start she didn’t like it when Edith was born, so another sister would maybe be to much. But, to both Robert’s and Cora’s surprise, she leaned in and kissed Sybil.

Edith also kissed her cheek and played with her little hands.

Robert leaned in to kiss Cora. “Are you alright?” He asked when he felt her skin burning up.

Cora nodded, but Robert got scared. He walked out to find a nurse. Cora clearly had a fever.

“Girls, do you like an ice cream?” Robert said, when he came back with the nurse. He didn’t want the girls to notice something was wrong.

While he was in the hospital restaurant he called John to come and pick up the girls.

+++

“Your wife has an infection in her uterus, it is called postpartum endometritis. We will start an antibiotic via IV right away.” The nurse said when Robert returned.

“Is she going to be alright?” He frowned.

“We have to watch out for sepsis, but at the moment she is only experiencing pain and a fever.”

Robert walked over to Cora, Sybil was lying in her cot. He took Cora’s hand. “Darling, why didn’t you tell me you were in pain.”

Cora gave him a faint smile. “After the horror you had to see during the birth, I didn’t want to worry you.”

He leaned in and softly kissed her. “After this, I am only more amazed by the power you have in you. I truly don’t understand how you were able to deliver Sybil. I was so afraid, we were going to loose you.” He stopped and swallowed visibly.

Cora took his hand. “I will be fine darling. The doctor, I don’t remember his name, said I will be fine.”

Robert gave her a strange look. “Wasn’t it Dr. Clarkson?”

Cora shook her head. “No, no, I know it was a different doctor.

Robert thought she was delusional and just smiled at her. He brushed her cheek. “Why don’t you try and get some sleep?”

“I love you darling.” Cora said, while nestling herself into her pillow.

+++

Dr. Clarkson started to laugh. “We have more doctors here at the hospital. Did you think I was the only one?”

Now Robert felt stupid. “I, I don’t know. It’s because we always see you.”

“I am not a specialist, so when things get complicated, like with her Ladyship’s thyroid operation and her recent complications, I step back.”

“You learn something new everyday. Thank you doctor. I will be headed home, please keep me updated if her Ladyship’s condition changes.”

+++

“My darling girl.” Martha sat down next to Cora, who was fast asleep, she brushed her cheek.

Robert handed Sybil to her. “Meet your granddaughter Sybil Cora.”

“Cora?” Martha looked up in surprise.

“I wanted her, to have her mother’s name in honour of her hard work.” Robert said with a soft smile.

“She is beautiful.” Martha said.

“Mother?” Cora’s voice was soft. “What are you doing here?”

Martha had made travel arrangements the moment Robert called her and told her the story of Sybil’s birth. She almost lost her daughter and although she didn’t like anything about England, she wanted to be there for her daughter.

She got up and kissed Cora on her forehead. “I figured you could use your mother right now.”

Cora started crying, Robert decided to leave the room and give the some time together.

+++

A couple days later, Robert was sitting next to Cora, who was finally feeling better.

“Cora? Do you miss America?” He asked.

“Some days.” She shifted Sybil a bit, she was hurting her. Breastfeeding was a wonderful thing, but at the same time pretty hurtful.

“I know it isn’t always easy living at Downton with my mother around.”

Cora smiled. “I like a challenge.” She took Robert’s hand and squeezed it.

Robert looked at Sybil. “She is so adorable. Look at how small she is.” Sybil had her hand wrapped around his finger.

“She is. Both Mary and Edith were bigger when they were born and yet this one gave me the biggest challenge.”

A nurse entered with Dr. Clarkson. “Are you ready to go home?” He asked.

Robert looked up in surprise. “You didn’t tell me, you were allowed to go home?”

“I wanted it to be a surprise.” She smiled.

“I want you to keep an eye on yourself and don’t over do things. You are still recovering.” Dr. Clarkson said firm.

“Her mother and I will make sure she takes her rest.” Robert said.

+++

“Mummy!!!!!” Mary came running through the great hall towards them. Robert was just in time to stop her from running into Cora.

“Careful, we need to be careful with mummy, alright?”

Mary lowered her eyes.

Cora handed Sybil to Robert and lowered herself. She put both arms around Mary and pulled her close. “I missed you darling.” Cora was soaking up the moment, she had expected this from Edith and not from Mary.

In the library, both Martha and Violet where there. “Welcome home.” Violet said.

Robert walked in with a box in his hands. “Sweetheart, I know it is late, but I have a anniversary gift for you.

Cora opened the box, inside was a a glass dome. Inside the dome was a wooden rose.

“Our marriage is as wood, durable and long-lasting. Wood becomes more beautiful and stronger as it gains years.” He kissed her. “Thank you for five incredible years, look at us. We live at Downton and have three wonderful girls.”

Cora brushed a tear away, she took Robert’s face in her hands. “I couldn’t love you more than I do now.” Ignoring both mothers in the room, they shared a passionate kiss.

It took you a year!, chapter 48

They were both staring at the screen. Robert was holding Cora’s hand.

“The baby is still very small, but everything is alright. It looks like a healthy baby.” The sonographer said.

Robert squeezed Cora’s hand. “See, nothing to worry about.” He brushed her cheek with his finger.

Cora let out a deep sigh and pulled her shirt down. She got up with difficulty. “I wouldn’t mind, if this little one will come soon.” She took Robert’s hand to step of the bed.

He put his hand on her belly and said.: “your mummy is ready to meet you, but stay a little bit longer.”

He walked Cora back to the car, but instead of driving home he drove to Rudding Park, he booked the Follifoot suite for two nights. “I want you to fully relax and at home that isn’t possible.”

Cora let go of Robert’s hand when she was seated on the sofa. She was so in love with Robert, it was unreal. Although he had his moments, where he could forget he had a family, he was the best husband she could, wish for. She rubbed her belly. “This is a very beautiful place darling. Thank you.”

+++

Cora had both Edith and Mary next to her on the sofa. She had missed her girls, although it was just two nights.

“When is the baby coming? Mama?” Mary asked circling her belly with her finger. Cora felt the baby react on the touches.

“I don’t know when, but it will be soon. She brushed her hair. She loved moments like this, where Mary wanted to cuddle and accepted that Edith was there too.

“Mama, big.” Edith said suddenly.

Cora chuckled. “Yes that’s right. Mummy is big.”

“Is our daughter calling you big?” Robert entered the drawing room. He kissed his girls on the head and gave Cora a kiss on her lips. “It is time for bed girls, I will read you a bedtime story.

“No, mummy!” They both said in a choir.

Cora smiled. “Daddy, will bring you up. I will come and read you a story.”

Robert took the girls up, gave them a bath and tugged them in. Cora followed a little bit later. She had a hard time climbing the stairs. She had to stop for a minute. Mrs. Hughes saw her hallway at the stairs and rushed over.

“Everything alright Milady?” She took Cora’s arm.

Cora stood straight again. “I think I am. I just felt very weird and couldn’t go on. But I can now. Thank you.” With Mrs. Hughes safely on her side, she climbed the rest of the stairs. She wasn’t going down anymore, she decided.

Once Cora finished the story, she and Robert left the room. Robert wanted to go down stairs. “Darling? Do you mind if I stay up?”

Robert turned around abruptly. “Is there something wrong?”

“No, but I think my body is preparing for the birth. I remember feeling like this with Edith.”

“Should I stay with you?” Robert carefully touched Cora’s belly.”

She gave him a smile. “I will go to bed directly, I will be alright. Can you send Baxter up?”

Robert gave her an annoyed look. “You will never learn to ask me! I can help you, darling.”

“I don’t want to bother you.”

Robert only sighed and helped Cora in her nightwear. “Sleep tight darling.” He kissed her softly, than again and again.

Cora chuckled, “This way, I will not sleep.”

“It can help you relax.”

Cora shook her head. “I prefer sleeping at the moment.”

+++

Cora woke up from a sharp pain. It felt like a pickaxe was slicing her in half. She tried to reach for Robert, but the movement let her yell out in pain.

Robert sat up right away, when he heard Cora cry out. “Cora?”

She was moving all over the bed in agony. Something was wrong, something was terribly wrong.

Robert jumped out of bed and called out for help. Baxter came running in. “We need a doctor.” Robert yelled.

Baxter stepped back when she saw Cora on the bed. White as the sheets, even her lips were drained of its colour. The sheets around her waist was staining in a dark red colour.

“Cora, stay with me. Breath. Cora?” Robert tried to hold her hand. But Cora was grabbing the sheets, letting them go, moving around. Everything to get some relief.

Dr. Clarkson came running in, after what felt like hours. Cora’s pain was getting worse and worse. Tears streaming down her face. She grabbed Robert’s hand, digging in her nails deep into his skin.

She felt she was losing consciousness, she heard Robert and Dr. Clarkson talking to her. She tried to stay awake, but she wanted to give in on the pain. The pickaxe was moving from side to side, and some moments hitting her from both sides.

“Cora, you are dilated enough, I need you to push. Cora? Come on, push.”

She couldn’t focus, she was slipping away.

She felt two strong hands on her shoulders. “Darling, push, you can do this. Push.”

Cora was following Robert’s deep voice. She pushed with all she had. She wanted to sleep, but he kept shaking her. She wanted to scream, he needed to stop. This pain needed to stop.

After what felt like an eternity, she finally pushed the baby out. But the pain wasn’t slowing down. She saw her world getting dark.

“We need to move her to the hospital as quickly as possible. She will bleed to death if I cannot stop it.”

The ambulance was already called and had arrived a view minutes ago. Cora was rushed to the hospital. Robert was sitting next to her, with the little one in his arms. He didn’t know if it was a girl or a boy. He only cared for Cora surviving this horror. He had never seen so much blood, Cora’s skin drained all colour. Her voice almost inaudible, she looked like she was already dead.

Robert had to wait in a separate room, where the little girl, he learned in the mean time, was getting checked.

“You have a very healthy little girl, Lord Grantham.” The nurse said. “she is very small, but healthy.”

Robert nodded and stared at the door, hoping a doctor would walk in with good news soon.

Finally, Dr. Clarkson walked in. “Congratulations with your daughter.” He said. “Her Ladyship is waiting for you.”

Robert’s face lit up, “she pulled through?”

“Barely, but she made it. She lost a lot of blood and will need to stay with us for some time.”

+++

Carefully Robert touched Cora’s cheek. She slowly opened her eyes and smiled at him. “Is it a boy?”

“My darling, meet our ‘Sybil Cora’ darling. A beautiful daughter.”

Cora stretched out her arms, Robert laid Sybil against her chest and sat next to her on the matrass. “I am not very good at making boys.” He said.

Cora was too tired, to notice what he was saying. A nurse came in and helped Cora latch Sybil on her breast.

Once Sybil was done drinking, he helped Cora lay back down. Before her head hid the pillow, she was in a deep sleep.

+++

“Mama, you are a grandmother of another darling girl.” Robert said through the phone. “No Cora is sleeping, the birth was hard and almost cost her, her life.

……..

“No, we are happy with our three girls. I feel blessed. I will call you when you can come, Cora will stay at the hospital for some time.

……

“Why would we get a wet nurse? Cora is perfectly capable of doing it herself.”

…….

“I am a proud father and husband. Talk to you soon.” Robert returned in Cora’s room. She was awake. She got a blood transfusion and she felt better immediately.

“Oh darling, I am so proud of you.” He said while kissing her.

It took you a year!, chapter 47

“Mary please stand still.” Cora was trying to fit her in a new dress. She was growing up so fast, she didn’t fit any of her nice dresses anymore.

Cora was squatting in front of her. Her belly was getting in the way, she almost entered her third trimester. “Mary, please come back and stand in front of me. Cora didn’t hear the door open and got startled when Robert put Mary back in front of her.

He looked at her frowning. “How are you going to get up?” He said.

Cora was holding herself steadied, with one hand on the ground and smiled. “With your help, now you are here.”

“And if I wasn’t here?” He had a worried sound in his voice.

“Than it would had been a little bit harder.” She reached out her hand.

Robert helped her up, she had one hand on her lower back and he saw she was pulling a painful face. “Can I do something to relief you from some pain?”

If you are not tired tonight, a massage would be wonderful. She kissed him and turned back to Mary. “Go find your sister and Nanny.” She notched her out of the room.

“I have time right now?” Robert stand behind Cora and pulled up her belly, to relief her from the weight.

Cora let out a sigh of relief, when Robert had the baby’s weight in his hands. She leaned her head back against his shoulder. “We have enough to do this afternoon, leave it for tonight.” She moaned softly when Robert let her belly go. She turned around and touched Robert’s arm. “I wanted to ask you. Before we moved to Downton, I was working at your office.”

“But honey, you have so much to do already?” Robert looked at her in surprise.

Cora lowered her eyes. “Everything I do, feels so useless. Organising parties isn’t very exciting and useful.”

“Let me talk with Rosamund, but for now.” He put his hands on her belly and felt a kick immediately. “Focus on yourself and keeping this little one healthy.”

“Thank you.” She kissed his lips.

+++

“Lady Grantham, I want to do another scan next month.” The sonographer said, clearing her belly.

Cora pulled down her shirt and stared at her with big eyes. “Is something wrong?”

“The baby is a little bit on the small side and I want to keep a close look on it. There is nothing to worry about, I just want to be safe. Especially with your history.”

Cora wished Robert had gone with her, but he was out for the day with John. “Do I need to eat more, or rest more?”

“You are doing perfectly, don’t change anything. Take your rest when you feel you need it, that is all. Your little one is looking healthy, just small.” She smiled at Cora.

+++

‘Don’t wait up for me, it will be very late.’ Cora read Robert’s text. She rubbed her belly and was fighting her tears. She needed Robert’s arms and his voice telling her everything would be alright. She knew the doctor said everything would be alright, but she made the mistake googling reasons why a baby was small. With her thyroid condition, it was pretty common, but there were a lot of other complications possible.

Baxter softly touched her shoulder. “Milady, can I bring you something?”

Cora looked up and gave her a smile. “A glass of warm malted milk would be lovely.”

Baxter left the room and Cora moved herself to the bed. Where she waited for Baxter to come back. She took the glass. “Thank you Baxter, goodnight.”

“Are you sure you are alright?” She said with a worried look on her face.

Cora gave her a smile. “I will be, thank you.”

+++

The next morning Cora woke up and Robert’s side was unslept. She got up as fast as possible with her big belly. She opened her phone and there was a text messages.

‘We are snowed in. I don’t know when I will be home.’

Cora walked to the window and opened the curtains. She was looking at a white world, it was beautiful. She dialled Robert’s number. The little one was also waking up and using her hips as goal posts.

“Darling, good morning.” Robert answered his phone.

Cora sniffed, the moment she heard Robert’s voice she couldn’t hold back her tears.

“Cora? What is wrong? What happened. Why are you crying.”

With a shaky voice Cora said. “It’s the baby, it’s not growing like it should be.”

“Do you need to go the hospital? Can they do something? It’s to early for delivery right?” Robert sounded worried.

“The doctor said, the baby is healthy, but I need to come in next month for another scan. Oh darling, I am so scared. There are so many complications with my medical history.”

“Don’t tell me you googled?”

Cora was silent.

“Sweetheart, google always tells you, you are dying. Listen to the doctor and believe in her words. She would not have send you home if there was really something to worry about.”

Cora took in a deep breath. “I know you are right. I wish you were here darling.”

“Mummy, it’s snowing.” Mary came running into her bedroom, with Nanny behind her. Edith was walking next to her. Cora quickly brushed her tears away.

Cora heard Robert chuckle on the other side of the line. “I saw it sweetie, we can build a snowman.” She pulled her up on her lap. “Darling, please be safe and only drive once it is safe to do so.” She said to Robert.

“I will, don’t worry to much alright. I will be home as soon as possible.”

+++

Cora was sitting on a bench outside, watching Mary and Edith build a snowman, Andy was helping them. Cora was waiting with the carrot, some pebbles and a shawl for the finishing effect. The baby was very active today, as if it wanted to let her know, everything was alright.

“Mummy, look.” Edith was pulling on Cora’s hand. She followed her little girl and picked her up to put the carrot and pebbles on the right place. Suddenly she felt familiar hands on her hips.

“What a beautiful snowman you girls made.” He took Edith out of Cora’s arms. “No heavy lifting, darling” He kissed her.

Cora gave Mary the shawl and Andy picked her up to wrap it around the neck of the snowman. “A perfect snowman.” Robert said: Wrapping his free arm around Mary, taking her over from Andy.

Cora looked at him. “He was so strong.”

“What?” He asked when he saw her staring.

Cora shook her head. “Nothing. I love you. Come Mrs. Patmore has made hot cocoa.”

Robert put the girls down and took Cora’s hand in his. “I will not go away anymore before the baby is born” He looked guilty.

Cora rested her head on his shoulder. “You couldn’t know this would happen. Don’t worry, I am not cross. Come we will go inside, it is getting cold and I ask Mrs. Patmore for some marshmallows, if we don’t hurry up, the girls will finish them before we can taste one.

It took you a year! Chapter 46

Robert watched Cora take a shower. It was incredible how a woman’s body changed during pregnancy. Today they would have the 12 weeks scan. The first time they would hear the heartbeat.

Robert noticed with Edith, Cora showed a lot earlier than with Mary, and this time she was even showing more. He loved it. There was nothing as beautiful as a pregnant woman. Especially in the first stages and when it was your own wife.

“What are you staring at?” Cora asked, wrapping herself in a towel.

“You” He answered with a cheeky grin on his face.

Cora rubbed her belly, I don’t want to think about the size I am getting this time.

Robert stepped closer and put his hands on her small bump. “You are carrying a precious load, what ever size you will get, you will still be beautiful.

Cora huffed. “I don’t think you will say that the moment I swell up as a balloon.”

Robert kissed her cheek. “You still don’t know me very well, I love you even more when you are pregnant.”

+++

“How is the office doing in London?” Cora asked Rosamund. They invited both Violet and Rosamund for dinner. Rosamund would stay a couple of nights.

Rosamund finished her bite, before answering. “It is very strange, without John. But it is doing well.”

“Good.” Cora nodded.

“Mama. Cora and I have some news.” Robert started.

“You are pregnant!” Rosamund exclaimed and jumped up to hug Cora.

Cora chuckled. “Yes, we are expecting.” She said with bright red cheeks. She didn’t expect this reaction and glanced at Violet to see her reaction.

She just nodded. “Well, let’s hope you will produce an heir this time.” She said snobbish.

“Mama, can we not do that this time. Especially after last year, we are just happy to receive another child. I almost lost Cora.” Robert’s voice broke.

Cora wanted to go over to him and hug him, but Violet would disapprove of that. She tried to catch his gaze and gave him a reassuring look.

“One way or another, you need to produce an heir.” Violet said harsh.

“Mama, you do realise, it is only the title, that will go to a cousin. Mary, Edith and this new bean will inherit Downton. When the estate was sold the first time, everything changed.

Cora looked up from her plate, this was new for her too. Robert saw her looking.

“I did some research, and when the estate was sold, there was a paper signed, what separated the title from the estate. The estate will just be inherited by our children, boys or girls. Only they will not be named, Earl or Countess of Grantham, but Lady Mary Crawley, for example.”

He took a bite. “Let’s change the subject. What are your plans the coming days, darling sister.”

+++

Cora changed into her new dress, she went shopping with Rosamund. It was Robert’s birthday and she wanted to look nice.

She chose a slit-detail gathered evening gown from Oscar de la Renta. Multicolour hues, created an ombré effect, they melted into each other and gave a feeling of fluidity and movement. The slit was high up her leg, she knew Robert would love that. Her tailor made the waist a little bit bigger, so her growing belly would fit in it. Also he made a different top on the inside, she wasn’t comfortable with the see through effect.

Robert entered the bedroom, and stood still, his mouth dropped. “Oh my! What a surprise. You look amazing.”

Cora twirled around and then stepped forward with her left leg, so the dress slit open.

“You look radiant.” Robert put his hands on her hips, the moment Baxter left the room. “You will be the best looking woman in the theatre tonight.” Softly he touched her bump.

Cora bought tickets for My Fair Lady in The Alhambra Theatre in Bradford. They would go out for dinner first.

“Darling, I have something for you.” She gave him a box. Inside was a Breitling super AVI mosquito watch. With a combination of polished and satin-brushed black ceramic bezel and a black dial with white contrasting chronograph counters.

Robert put the watch on his wrist straight away. “This is to much darling, I do love it.”

“You remember the gifts I get from you.” She kissed him gently. “Come, we will be late.” She took his hand and they walked downstairs.

+++

The evening had been wonderful. The Alhambra Theatre was a wonderful place. Full of history and as soon as the staff knew the Earl and Countess of Grantham were visiting, they arranged a tour inside the building.

Now they walked hand in hand up to Downton. Robert asked the chauffeur to drop them at the gate. He wanted to enjoy some more time with Cora alone.

“Cora.” Robert started. “I want you to know, it truly doesn’t matter if this little one.” He put his free hand on her abdomen. “Is a boy or a girl.”

Cora covered his hand with hers. “Are you sure?”

“Naturally, I would love it if the title would go to a son of mine. But if it doesn’t happen, so be it. The estate will be for our girls and that’s enough.”

Cora squeezed his hand and stopped walking. “If this bean isn’t a boy, we can keep trying.” She lifted her chin so Robert could kiss her.

He didn’t miss her que and covered her lips with kisses. She opened her lips slightly as an invitation. Robert pushed his tongue inside and discovered her mouth.

Cora let out a soft moan. “Can we go inside?”

Robert scooped her of the ground and carried her inside and went directly upstairs to their bedroom. He took off his own clothes, helped Cora out of her dress. Picker her up again and carefully laid her down. “How beautiful you are.” He looked at her with so much adoration, Cora’s heart almost burst.

Mrs. Hughes had seen the way the got inside and decided her Ladyship didn’t need Baxter tonight. She told Carson he could turn of the lights and lock the doors. They wouldn’t come downstairs anymore. And she told Baxter, his Lordship would help her Ladyship himself.

It took you a year!, chapter 45

Robert rested his head in his hands. John just called and said he wanted to quit his job. He said he and Anna wanted to spend more time together. But the office was in London, so he couldn’t stay on.

Cora entered, she walked over to Robert and softly put her hands on his shoulders. “Something wrong?”

Robert looked up, “I don’t know what to do with the office in London, John wants to move here, to be with Anna. He is going to hand in his notice.”

Cora pulled up a chair and sat down. “Why does the office need to be in London?”

Robert stared at her for a second. “Because that is where it is and all the employees are from around London.”

“Could you not make the head office here at Downton and make the London office a dependence?”

He took her hand in his. “That is a great idea, that could work. I will talk with Rosamund and John about it.”

“Good, I am glad. It also means I will have you more at home.”

“The business is thriving since we moved back to Downton. As if people have more faith in our knowledge, no we are back in the estate.”

“That is wonderful darling.” She kissed his cheek and went back to her own work, she needed to place some phone calls for the garden party, she would tell Robert her news later today.

+++

“MILADY, MILORD” A stable boy called out.

Carson rushed to the entrance to hold him back. “What ever is the matter, that you are making such a fuss.”

“It is lady Mary. They need to come.” The boy said out of breath. He had run the whole way from the stables to the house.

“I will get them, don’t come further inside with those dirty boots” Carson went to look for Cora. He found her in her study.

“Milady?” He said. “Something happened with Lady Mary and you need to go to the stables.”

Cora jumped up. “What?” She gasped. “Does his Lordship know.”

“Not yet, I thought I needed to warn you first.”

“Thank you Carson.” She rushed out and jumped on a bike. When she arrived at the stables, she saw one of the stable boys with a very white looking Mary on her lap.

“What happened?” She asked, while carefully taking Mary in her arms.

“We lost sight of her for a minute, she must have walked into the stables. What happened exactly we don’t know, but all of the sudden there was a lot of noise. We found Lady Mary underneath a wooden board. She doesn’t seem to be hurt, but very, very scared.” Nanny said, who was holding Edith’s hand.

Mary had wrapped her little arms around Cora and was clinging on to her. Cora pushed her off, to look at her. “Darling, does something hurt?”

Mary nodded.

“Where does it hurt?”

Mary pointed at her arm. Cora saw a strange bump on her wrist. At that moment Robert came running in.

“Is she alright?” He asked, kneeling down in front of Cora and Mary.

“I think she hurt her wrist.” Cora said. “We should go to the doctor to get it checked out.”

Robert nodded. “I took the car, so we can go immediately.”

“Can you take Lady Edith, back to the house?” Cora asked Nanny.

+++

“Nothing to worry about. Lady Mary has a bruised arm and wrist, but no broken bones.” Dr Clarkson gave Mary a pet on her head. “Keep an eye on her tonight, just to be sure, but I don’t think there is something wrong.”

“We will do.” Cora said, while picking up Mary and holding her close. With her 3,5 years she was getting heavy, but she could still pick her up.

“Thank you Dr. Clarkson.” Robert shook his hand, then he turned towards Cora and Mary. “I think you deserve an ice cream for this fright.”

Mary’s whole face lit up.

+++

Robert was sitting at Mary’s bedside, he took Dr. Clarkson’s words very seriously and was determined to wake Mary up every hour.

Around three in the morning, Cora walked into the nursery. It was time, Mary and Edith would get their own rooms, she thought. “Robert?” She said very softly. He was lying with his head on Mary’s bed, in a very uncomfortable position. He didn’t wake up to her voice, but she didn’t want to wake up Edith or Mary. Very gently she kissed his cheek.

“Darling?” She said quietly, when he opened his eyes. “Come to bed.”

Robert shook his head. “We need to wake her.” He whispered.

“She will be fine, I promise.” She took his hand and pulled him up.

Back in their own bedroom, she curled up against him. “I can’t sleep without you next to me. Mary will be alright.”

“You are right, we both need our sleep.”

Cora snuggled even closer and whispered. “The three of us need sleep.”

It took Robert a minute to process what Cora just said, but then it clicked. “You are pregnant?”

“It’s just a home test, I need to go to Dr. Clarkson for the conformation, but yes, I think I am.”

“Oh my darling, what a wonderful news, another little one.” He moved his hand to her abdomen and kissed her passionately.

“Maybe this time, I will give you your boy.” Cora said breaking the connection.

Robert kissed her forehead. “Darling, it doesn’t matter. I love our girls with all my heart. I didn’t know how much love a person could have for somebody, but they proved me, it is an infinite amount.” He kissed her again.

“But what about the title.”

“We will see about that. I love the little one already and I love you even more. Oh my darling, I am so incredibly blessed with you as my wife. I have everything in one package, beauty and brains.”

Cora blushed. “Let’s hope for a healthy little one.”

“Let’s do that.” Robert wrapped his arm around Cora and rested his head on his pillow. He fell asleep almost instantly.

It took you a year!, chapter 44

 They celebrated Cora’s birthday, she turned 25. Robert wanted to give a big party, but Cora managed to keep him from that. They spent the day in the garden with their girls. It was a lovely early summer day.

Robert had spoiled Cora this morning with a beautiful necklace from Buccellati, the Ghirlanda Necklace. The white gold with diamonds looked like lace from afar, of course he also gave her matching earrings and a bracelet.

Cora had gone up to change, Robert was taking her to Grantley Hall for her birthday dinner. She had bought a new dress, a mermaid shape, white with a pink floral design. She had the perfect figure for slim fitting dresses and she knew how much Robert liked it, when she was wearing dresses like this. Robert entered her room, he was already changed into his dinner jacket. He looked incredibly handsome in the dark blue he was wearing. Baxter stepped aside, she just finished putting Cora’s curls up in a half up do. He walked towards her and put his hands on her waist and kissed her neck. “You look beautiful darling, and this dress is perfect for your new necklace. He opened the box and put it on her neck.

Cora heard Baxter gasp. “Milady, you look beautiful, if I may say so.”

She gave Baxter a radiant smile. “Thank you Baxter, tonight, when we are back, I can manage on my own.” Cora knew, Robert wanted to help her tonight after dinner and she loved it when he helped her undress and take her hair down.

+++

The next day’s Robert had been absent, Rosamund had already mentioned he was back to his old ways. Focussed on his work and forgetting that he had a family. Luckily Cora herself was also extremely busy with the upcoming garden party next month.

Robert came home from a day trip with John. John had gone downstairs to see Anna and Robert started looking for Cora. He found Nanny with the girls in the music room. He cuddled Mary. “Where is your mummy?”

Mary only looked it him with her big eyes, of course she wasn’t going to answer. He looked at Nanny.

“She went upstairs some time ago, but she hasn’t returned.”

Robert took the stairs with bit steps, it was nothing like Cora to go upstairs in the middle of the day and not return. He knocked on their bedroom door. “Cora, are you here?”

He heard muffled crying, quickly he opened the door. “Cora? What is wrong?”

She tried to quickly dry of her tears. “Nothing, never mind darling. How was your day?”

Robert sat down next to Cora, who was sitting on the settee. “No, don’t do this. There is something, you can tell me.”

“Darling, I am just being stupid. I thought I was pregnant, but I got my period again.”

Robert put his arm around her. “You are not being stupid, it would had been wonderful if you were, but it will happen. We will keep trying.”

Cora shrug her shoulders.

“What aren’t you telling me?” Robert looked at her.

“What if my illness prevents me from getting pregnant.”

“You know what, we will make an appointment with Dr. Clarkson, then we will know why you aren’t getting pregnant. It is not that we don’t try.” He chuckled and tickled her side.

Cora started laughing, she leaned back and let herself fall onto the bed. Robert leaned over her. “And we will just keep trying in the meantime.” He softly kissed her nose.

+++

“I will send in the bloodwork to check if your levels are alright. The medicines you are using should not give problems with pregnancy, but you never know. With these test we will know more.” Dr. Clarkson said.

Cora nodded, Robert was sitting next to her and she just knew how uncomfortable this kind of talk made him. She took his hand and gave it a little squeeze.

“Robert we will take a sample of yours to rule out any problems on that side.” He handed Robert a cup and with bright red cheeks, Robert went into a different room.

“Are you feeling alright overall? No problems with your legs or tiredness.” Dr. Clarkson asked in the meantime.

“I am feeling alright, I am happy my voice is back to normal and some days I feel tired and sometimes the twitching in my leg isn’t truly gone, but that’s only when I am tired.”

“All normal, good. I am glad to hear that.”

When Robert came back in the room and handed Dr. Clarkson the cup he said. “Once the results are back, I will call you.”

+++

Robert took Cora to a local restaurant for lunch. He was a little bit flustered. Cora chuckled. “You didn’t expect that you had to do that?”

Again Robert’s cheeks coloured. “Cora! We can’t discuss this here.”

Cora smiled. “Oh my darling, I love how you get squeamish when it comes to medical things.” She reached for his hand. “Don’t worry, we will not talk about it anymore today.”

Robert let out a sigh of relief and looked at the menu.

They both chose a simple fish and chips and enjoyed being out together.

+++

“Milady, a telephone call for you.” Carson entered Cora’s study.

She got up and took the phone. “Thank you Carson.”

She heard Dr. Clarkson’s voice on the other side. “I have good news for you. Both you and his lordship are in perfect health. There is no reason to not try and go for another baby.”

“Thank you, I am glad to hear this.”

She put the phone down and searched for Robert. She found him with his mother in the library.

“Mama? I didn’t know you were coming?” She kissed her on the check.

“I am here for Robert, so why should you know?” Violet sneered.

Cora tried to ignore it, she turned towards Robert. “We got the green light, everything is perfectly alright.”

“Where do you need a green light for?” Violet asked.

“Something only Robert and I need to know.” She looked briefly at Violet and then hurried out of the library, she didn’t know where she got the bravery to say that, but she knew she should better not be in Violet’s sight for the rest of the day, she would be fuming. She decided to walk towards the stables with Edith and Mary.

“Girls, would you like to ride today?”

She got an enthusiastic reaction from both of them, Edith was too small to sit on her own, but the stable manager made a seat so she could sit on a small pony. Mary was already capable of sitting on her own, as long as the pony was walking very slowly.

Cora was learning to ride herself, she never did that back home, but she wanted to be able to ride out with Robert one day. He was an excellent rider.

It took you a year!, chapter 43

“You can’t do this.” Cora raised her voice.

“Cora, I don’t have a choice. This is my job, the clients need me.”

“And your little girl doesn’t. It is Edith’s birthday, you need to be home.” Cora’s eyes shot fire.

“Be realistic, she is turning two, it doesn’t matter if we celebrate a week later.”

“It matters to me, especially after Mary’s party.”

“I will see what I can do, but I truly don’t understand the fuss you are making.” Robert turned back to his paperwork and Cora understood his hint.

+++

“Mrs. Patmore, can you make a small cake on Edith’s birthday and the big one a week later?” Cora asked when she entered the kitchen.

“Anything you want Milady. Something special for dinner on lady Edith’s birthday.”

Cora frowned. “Let’s leave that for her party. We will invite Lady Rosamund and Lady Grantham on that day.”

“We will make both days special Milady. Anything else.” Mrs. Patmore smiled.

“Thank you very much, that’s all.”

+++

Cora was sitting with Edith in front of her, in the music room, Edith’s little fingers were plucking the strings of Cora’s guitar. Nanny was outside with Mary. Mary had been bullying Edith all morning and Cora had enough. It was Edith’s special day and although they weren’t celebrating it today, because Robert was on a business trip, she wanted Edith to feel special today.

She was humming a song to Edith when the door opened.

“Lady Rosamund, Milady.” Carson announced.

Cora wanted to up, but Rosamund told her to stay seated. She kissed Cora on her cheek and Edith on the top of her head. “Are you having a fun day, my darling.” She picked her up from the floor and twirled her around.

It was uncanny how much they looked alike. If Cora didn’t know better, Edith could had been a child of Rosamund. She put her guitar away and looked at Rosamund with surprise.

“We aren’t celebrating her day today?”

“Oh, I know, but I wanted to give her gift on her real birthday. So here I am.” Rosamund said.

Andy entered with a big package in his arms. “Where do you want me to put this?” He asked.

“Put it down here, so Lady Edith can open it.” Rosamund said.

Cora watched with surprise, while Rosamund helped Edith open the package. Inside was a balance bike. Edith loved everything with wheels, her whole face lit up.

“Come we will go outside, so you can ride.” Rosamund took Edith’s hand and walked out of the music room. Leaving a stunned Cora behind.

She followed quickly and saw Edith stepping on the bike, it was an adorable sight, her little legs moving as fast as they could and Rosamund behind her.

Nanny came around the corner with Mary. She wanted to run towards Edith, but Cora could grab her. “In a minute darling.”

+++

Once the girls were in bed and sleeping, Cora walked into the library, where Rosamund was sitting. She was staying the night.

“Thank you for today.” Cora said while sitting down on the other sofa.

“Of course! We needed to celebrate her birthday on her birthday. She may not remember, but you do.”

Cora nodded. “Robert didn’t even call.” She lowered her eyes.

“He is back to his old self. I wondered how long it would take.” Rosamund said.

“I am afraid you are right. It doesn’t matter, I love him either way. What time are you leaving tomorrow?”

“I was thinking of staying until next week. If you don’t mind?”

Cora smiled. “Of course, I don’t mind. I love having you here.”

+++

Cora was woken up by soft lips touching hers.

“Hello, my darling.” She heard Robert’s voice.

“Hmm, your home. What time is it?” Cora asked sleepy.

“It’s 3 am, go back to sleep. But I couldn’t resist the urge to kiss you.”

Cora snuggled against him. “I missed you.”

+++

Robert was pushing Cora and Rosamund to speed up the breakfast. He was constantly looking at his watch. It was the day of Edith’s birthday.

Once everybody was finished, Robert managed to get them all in the great hall. Cora gasped, there was a big bear standing there in a blue coat and a red hat.

Edith stormed towards the bear and screamed. “Bear, bear.”

In the distance there was the sound of bagpipes and horse feet. A red haired woman in a blue/green dress came riding towards the abbey. It was Merida from Brave.

Cora chuckled, clearly Robert didn’t remember which one of the two was Edith’s favourite.

He turned towards her. “I didn’t know.” He looked guilty.

“Oh darling.” Cora laughed. “This is wonderful, look at them.” She nodded towards Edith and Mary who both were interacting with Paddington and Merida. But

Cora was glad Violet wasn’t here yet.

Robert looked at her and leaned against her shoulder. “Don’t you worry, they will be gone before Mama will arrive.”

Robert knew her to well she thought. She lifted her head and kissed him. “Thank you for making this day special for Edith.”

“I know how much you wanted to give Edith the same type of party as Mary got from your mother. I know it is a week too late.”

“Don’t you worry about that.” Cora smiled and kissed him again.

+++

When Violet arrived in the afternoon, both Paddington and Merida had indeed left.

Violet brought gifts for both their girls. She had saved Mary’s birthday gift for today.

They got the same gift, an Aurora solitaire diamond bracelet. With their initials.

“Mama, this is beautiful.” Cora took the bracelets and put them on their arms. Mary was parading around with it, but Edith just stared at it.

“She is too young to understand the value, Mama.” Robert said. “Come, we will cut the cake.”

Andy just entered with an enormous Paddington themed cake in his hands. They all started singing and Edith loved the attention. Robert picked her up and with every hooray he threw her into the air. The room was filled with laughter.
